FUERTEVENTURA, Canary Islands, Spain |2019 - windy beaches, blue Ocean, desert landscape, cliffs
Our second October visit of this beautiful island in the Atlantic Ocean. Definitely recommended mainly because of the beautiful long beaches and lagoons. The best idea is to rent a car and drive around the island. The island is only cca 130 km long.

The Caves of Ajuy, Fuerteventura - Las Cuevas de Ajuy
The Caves of Ajuy, Fuerteventura
We decided to take a trip down to Ajuy to visit the sea caves as we had never been and it is another in the list of things to see in Fuerteventura. Ajuy (pronounced Ahooie) is a small coastal village about two-thirds of the way down the west coast of Fuerteventura. It is in the municipality of Pájara.
There is a car park just outside the village and a short downhill walk brings you to the sea front. The path to the caves is on the north (righthand) side of the beach. It is a fairly easy walk along the cliff followed by some fairly steep steps down into the caves, but these do have a sturdy handrail.
When you get into the caves the first chamber has lots of large rocks to climb over if you want to reach the back of the sea caves but by going through the large hole you can enter the second chamber. This has a sandy floor so you can easily walk all the way to the end of the cave. A torch or a flashlight app on a phone would be useful towards the end.
Like many things in Fuerteventura - it is free to visit the caves! So when deciding what to do in Fuerteventura it isn't going to cost a fortune.
Would I recommend a trip to see the sea caves of Ajuy? I certainly would and you can follow it up with a nice lunch in one of the beachside restaurants and even have an hour on the beach.

Metal detecting Spain - Fuerteventura, Canary Islands
My recent metal detecting trip to Fuerteventura.

The best time to do metal detecting, especially in holiday destinations, are early mornings. There’s only few people at the beach and at the same time one can enjoy beautiful sunrises.
This time my metal detecting destination was in Fuerteventura, one of the islands belonging to Spanish Canary archipelago. Although I was on holiday, I woke up early in the morning and headed to close by beach, where the sun was climbing over the eastern horizon.
During the days the beach is full of life, but now the silence was only disturbed by the waves crushing to the sandy shore.
I began detecting next the the sun beds, where I thought I would find coins and other items. It didn’t take long that I heard the familiar sound from the headphones and I unearthed the first coin. Soon after I found another one, the next one, and many others.
I was surprised of how clean the beach was and that I didn’t find much pull taps or other garbage. First I thought that someone had been recently detecting the beach, but some of the coins buried in the sand were so dark and corroded by salty water that I don't think the beach had been detected for at least a year.
On the other hand, all the coins I found were euros, so all the Pesetas and other currencies had already been found before me.
Anyway, during my two hour detecting I was able to dig up coins worth about ten euros.
As the morning progressed, more people started to come to the beach. I packed my bag and left, but decided to come back the next morning, since I believed there would many more treasures to be found in the sand.
Next morning I was at the beach before the sunrise. This time the beach was windy, but it didn’t make detecting any harder. Although I was hoping to find some rings or other jewelry besides the coins, the tourist visiting this beach had been careful enough and this time they left behind only euros and one small yellow toy car.
In any case, like in the previous mornings, the beautiful rising sun above the sea made the early waking worth while.
I bought my Garrett detector from Finndetector.com

Calderon Hondo - Fuertaventura
If we go towards Lajares from Corralejo, looking to the right we can see a beautiful series of aligned volcanoes, among them the Calderon Hondo. Climbing to the top is a unique experience, suitable for everyone ..
These volcanoes emerged about 50,000 years ago, they increased the surface area of Fuerteventura and created the island of Lobos.
The Calderon Hondo is one of the best preserved. To get to this volcano follow the road to Lajares from Corralejo, just before arriving in Lajares there is a roundabout near the Campo Municipal de Futbol (a small football stadium), take the first exit on the right direction Majanicho.
After less than a kilometer there is a little space on the right, at the foot of volcanoes, where to park your vehicle and begin the journey towards the volcano.
The access to the volcano is very simple, the path is suitable for everyone, a small dirt path to follow, surrounded by stones lined up along almost the entire path. It takes about 45 minutes walking to get to the top, once there, you'll find a small Mirador to contemplate the crater of this impressive volcano and its surrounding landscape.

Barranco de las Peñitas, Fuerteventura
Barranco de las Peñitas is an impressive gorge that lies between the Presa de Peñitas reservoir (now silted up) and the Barranco de Mal Paso (which eventually leads to Ajuy). This is the path that Jean de Béthencourt and his cohorts took when they began their conquest of Fuerteventura in 1402. The small white-washed Vírgen de la Peña Hermitage, perched on the bare rock on the side of the narrow ravine, is the objective of a pilgrimage during the island's most important religious festival.
The 2014 Ridley Scott movie, Exodus: Gods and Kings, used the lower part of this valley as the set for a large section of the film (from about 45:00 to 50:00).

Fuerteventura: La Isla de Los Lobos 2
Easy climb of the Montaña La Caldera on the Isla de Los Lobos, which lies just 2 km off the north coast of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. The mountain is an extinct volcano, half of which has crumbled into the sea, while the crater bottom of the other half forms a small beach. From the top there are panoramic views of Fuerteventura and Lanzarotte.
