Galle Fort Clock Tower
Galle Fort, in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, was built first in 1588 by the .... site of Portuguese Roman Catholic church; the All Saints Anglican Church built in 1871; the 1882 Clock Tower and the 1939 Galle Lighthouse.

Galle Fort Clock Tower
The Galle Clock Tower (or Anthonisz Memorial Clock Tower) is located within the Galle Fort in Galle, Sri Lanka. The Clock Tower is a popular landmark and overlooks the central Moon Bastion, on the site of the former guard room. The Clock Tower was constructed in 1883, paid for through public subscriptions by the people of Galle, in recognition of Dr. P. D. Anthonisz. The clock itself was the sole gift of a grateful patient, Mudaliyar Samson de Abrew Rajapakse.
The plate on the clock tower carries the inscription:
This tower erected by public subscription to the perpetual memory of Peter Daniel Anthonisz (born in Galle) in testimony of his skill and benevolence in relieving human suffering. MDCCCLXXXIII.
Dr Anthonisz (1822-1903) was a renowned Burgher doctor, who served as the Colonial Surgeon for the Southern Province and as a representative on the Legislative Council.
The tower is roughly four storeys high and is situated immediately inside the fort ramparts.

I left Bentota and took the train again for three more hours and arrived in Galle. Galle flourished as a trading port for spices. It is also the place where there is a constant invasion trace of the Western powers. This clock tower is a symbol of long colonial history. I do not know exactly, but it was a colony of England and Portugal. Sri Lanka was built by Europeans and a port was built here. I think this is part of history and part of the world. In the 16th century, Portugal started to build a fort here, and later through the Netherlands and England, the entire city was surrounded by walls, making Galle an impregnable city. Now, many tourists come to the city and imagine what they were like at the time. I do not know much about the colonial era of Sri Lanka, but this place is really peaceful. Best City in SRI LANKA! - Galle, Sri Lanka
We spent the day visiting Galle Fort which quickly became our favorite city in Sri Lanka thus far! We were so impressed by the vibrancy that we decided to take you guys on a Galle city tour! See the Galle Lighthouse, best places to eat, and the famous fort along the waters edge.
One of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka is Galle, a colonial fort city and the largest city in Southern Sri Lanka. We started the day flying the drone on Galle beach which looked to be a fantastic getaway spot for tourists and locals alike. We met a really nice Sri Lankan family and it was nice to get some warm Sri Lankan hospitality!
We then headed to the famous Galle lighthouse, which we’re sure you’ve seen all over your instagram feed. The Galle lighthouse is the southern most tip of Galle city and serves as a big tourist attraction right on the water.
After the lighthouse, we headed over to the Galle clock tower to see the actual fort which was first constructed by the Portuguese. The fort was massive and we had a great time exploring that part of history from one of the oldest cities in Sri Lanka.
By this time, we’ve worked up quite an appetite so into the city we went! It’s the colonial charm that makes Galle so special and if you want to explore Sri Lanka in a more modern way, Galle is the city for you. With streets upon street of cute local shops and restaurants, Galle city has everything you need for a holiday or day long visit.
