Sailing Jamaica to Providencia
Here is a little video of the rest of our sail through the northern Jamaica to Isla de Providencia.
We search and find numerous waterfalls in Ocho Rios. The autopilot is fixed in Montego Bay (again), only a different part of it breaks couples of hours after.
The captain fixes it during the passage, though breathing in the eau-de-diesel from the engine room makes him sick and adds to the whole strain of this passage.
Some thoughs from our J-P passsge:
FIRST NIGHT of the passage is the most beautiful one - as the sun sets behind the horizon, the autopilot breaks down. It's hand steering from now on, lucky us we only have some 300 more miles to go! The sea actually calms down for the night (so far the equation has always been 'wind gone + big wakes = nightmare') so we're gliding peacefuly through the baby wakes at 5kts. The light on the compass doesn't work but there's the moon and stars I can align my heading with so I follow them and we're playing the hide and seek game with the clouds. The Pedro Bank is passed by and the night is pretty uneventful, what a miracle. The sun is rising with an incredible mix of colours CELEBRA 24. The captain is asleep and no camera around to capture the beauty. I'm enjoying it from the helm station, feeling utterly greatful and happy.
SECOND NIGHT - the captain patched up a little light for the compass, which is awesome as the clouds are all over the sky. No games tonight. My hands and fingers are starting to get stiff and sore but my body is getting used to the rhythm of 3 hour shifts we have, and I can also get bits and pieces of sleep when not on the helm. We're a few miles west of Serranilla Bank when I notice both of the depth sounders continuously reading about 90ft of water and going down. The panic monster starts to nibble at my stomach - according both GPS we have on, we should be in the depth of thousand feet now. The depth gets quickly to 60ft and I steer hard to starboard as the captain scouts the surrounding - it's pitch black all around. The depth starts to rise up again and I pass the helm to the captain. I'm shaking more than a puppy getting its first bath, while checking the charts closely ... it seems that the bank (containing unlit little islands) position is quite off on the map and we just went over a part of it. As the night continues, the depth sounders are randomly reading different depths not matching the GPS. From now on, every shift I take is a painful torture the depth sounders are putting me into. Is it just a technical error or should I brace myself for a possible collision? The first light comes to me as a hero on a golden horse.
THIRD NIGHT - as the weather forcast predicted, this night is the most challenging. The wind is blowing loud and strong, followed by towering waves. Our energy is somewhere around a chewed-up-gum level. We switched to two hours shift-two hours sleep strategy. I gave up trying to find a comfortable position to sit anymore and my steering motions seems automatic. Forming a closed fist with my hand seems like an impossible task. Too bad, for I'd love to punch the stupid depth sounders that keep playing their games with me. We have the third reef on the main sail and about 10% of the genoa open - yet we're moving at around 6kts (with the highest speed of 12.1 kts). All that while passing a ship graveyard bank on the west (I counted 9 shipwrecks on the map). At times when the depth sounder reads continues numbers around 20feet of water, my mind's wondering how's the underwater world gonna celebrate the 10th wreck celebration. The boat will be covered in a gorgeously colorful coat of coral and the GPS and depth sounders will become rusty and crumble into tiny pieces as a punishment for their crimes. That though gives me a feeling of satisfaction as I continue heading south. On my last shift that night my eyes go from the horizon (black) to the clock (5.00am), to the compass (210°), to the clock (still 5.00am), to the speed to the clock to the depth to the clock-horizon-clock-compass-clock....5.01am ... awesome! 59 more minutes.
With the sun rising up, we have a couple more hours to go. Getting close to the large coral reef guarding the island (2nd biggest in the Caribbean) we're trying to locate the yellow bouy marking the reef. From the internet we know for sure that there's an offset on the GPS here. No bouy in sight but we can make a faint lining of the mountains in the distance and a light tower possibly marking the spit of a land on the reef.
Soon enough, the captain is chatting in Spanish with the coast guard through the VHF radio, the smile on his face bigger than the sails. We navigate through the buyed chanell, around some uncharted coral heads and finally anchor in this untouched paradise, surrounded by mountains and pirate history, knowing we found a beautiful place to call home for a while.

Cruise Ship Vacation for Adults Only Would You Pay More To Go On A Cruise Without Kids?
Cruise Ship Vacation for Adults Only Would You Pay More To Go On A Cruise Without Kids? P&O cruise Lines is going to convert the P&O Aurora into an adult only cruise ship in March 2019. Why would they do that? Also Sacramento wants to host the NBA All Star Game in 2022 or 2023 and they need a ton of hotel rooms to handle the crowds. The solution? Why not charter a few big cruise ships, park them near downtown and voila! Tons of full service hotel rooms for the week of the game and then the ships go away!
