Travel Istqanbul, Turkey - Tour of Dolmabahce Palace
Take a tour of Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul, Turkey -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
On the European side of the Bosphorus lies the Dolmabahce Palace, the former center of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey.
The palace was built in the mid-19th century to be the administrative center of the empire, and to house the Ottoman sultans.
European designs such as Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical influenced the Ottoman architecture, providing a synthesis of style.
This is amongst the largest palaces in the world, with the main building measuring over 45,000 square meters.
The interior houses the Crystal Staircase and the largest Bohemian crystal chandelier in the world.
This clock tower keeps correct time, unlike other house clocks which are set to 9:05, the time of founder and first president Ataturk's death.
Today the palace is a museum, and visitors can check out the garden which gives the place its name.
Dolmabahce Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Dolmabahce in Turkey.
Built in the middle of the 19th century and set on the beautiful shores of the Bosporus, the Dolmabahce Palace shines out in its old splendour, the third sultan's palace of Istanbul, its royal buildings are considered to be the most beautiful examples of Osmanic architecture. The Turkish architect, Kabaret Balian and his son, Nikogos, were encouraged to indulge themselves both financially and creatively in the design of this impressive and opulent palace. As with its exterior, the beauty and splendour of the internal rooms is simply overwhelming and its magnificent sunlit stairways were influenced by the design of the Paris Opera House. The entire palace is like a magnificent museum. Various works of art, paintings and other valuable gifts from various diplomats and visiting royal families are on display throughout.. Whenever a gentle breeze travels across the Bosporus and makes the flowers and blossoms move like dancers, it is easy to understand why the last great sultans chose this place as their home.

Dolmabahçe Sarayı
T.C. Cumhurbaşkanlığı bünyesindeki Milli Saraylar İdaresi Başkanlığına bağlı Dolmabahçe Sarayı, otuz birinci Osmanlı padişahı Sultan Abdülmecid (1839-1861) tarafından yaptırılmıştır. İnşasına 13 Haziran 1843 tarihinde başlanan Saray, çevre duvarlarının tamamlanması ile birlikte 7 Haziran 1856 tarihinde kullanıma açılmıştır. Saray'ın ana yapısı; Mâbeyn-i Hümâyûn (Selâmlık), Muâyede Salonu (Tören Salonu) ve Harem-i Hümâyûn olmak üzere üç bölümden oluşur.

Karakoy
Down the Beyoglu district, on the banks of the Bosphorus and just in front of Old Town are the neighborhoods Karaköy and Tophane, two neighborhoods that besides being among the oldest of Istanbul are also among the most interesting to discover .
Karaköy is located right in front of the old town, near the Galata Bridge and down the famous Tower of the same name. It covers an area from the banks of the Golden Horn to the Bosphorus. The first traces of urbanization dates back to the Byzantine Empire, it is therefore one of the most historical and important place of the city. It is still a condensed of Istanbul with different populations living close to each other.
As early as the 13th century its location gave him the primary role of the port and the commercial center of Constantinople. Populated at that time by the Genoese, the area is built on the model of an Italian city. The port grew rapidly and became one of the largest in Europe. He welcomed throughout its history different communities fleeing wars or other disasters, including the Jewish, Greek or Russian. It was a commercial area, rich and very dynamic.
Passage Français
These communities have left an indelible architectural and religious heritage in this area. The presence of numerous churches and synagogues attest of this cosmopolitan past but also the freedoms guaranteed by the Sultans to the different religious groups.
After a long period of decline following the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1923, the opening in 2004 of the Museum of Modern Art in the old docks has given life again to the neighborhood by radically transforming it to one of the cultural and artistic center of the city. The Istanbul Modern is a beautiful museum not to miss if you like contemporary art. The entrance is 15 TL, and is closed on Mondays. The museum’s restaurant is also very nice to eat on the Bosphorus shore (when there are no large cruise ships ahead of it). For more informations : istanbulmodern.org/en
The little streets adjacent to the Museum of Modern Art are quickly “hipsterized” and the art galleries, cafes and restaurants flourish alongside more traditional shops.
A whole new population of young people of Istanbul is now meeting there for a coffee or to work in the many shared office concepts. It’s a little residential area in which life unfolds quietly its the charming terraces.
Street-art is a global phenomenon that did not miss Istanbul and particularly Karaköy. It has been now several years that Turkish street artists have made a name for themselves and perform their art freely in the streets, some shop owners even pay for it. Some little streets give the impression of being in open-air galleries.
Karaköy is also currently one of the best places to be in Istanbul at night. The weekends evenings it is lively and perfect for partying until dawn in clubs like Mitte, Goya or Colony. You can find some great restaurants in our articles: “breakfast (or brunch)” and “going out in Beyoglu“.
The other part of Karaköy on the side of the Golden Horn at the bottom of the Galata Tower has developed particularly in the 19th century by becoming the financial center of the Ottoman Empire under the leadership of the great families from the Jewish communities. He quickly became a stronghold of world finance, a kind of an Ottoman Wall Street.
Just above Karaköy, there is a district that developed after the capture of Constantinople by the Ottomans. They set up a large cannon foundry (“Tophane-I-Amire”) under the reign of Sultan Mehmet II the Conqueror (the Sultan who conquered Constantinople).
This foundry is the starting point of this district whose function was the production and storage of the arsenal of the Empire. Tophane literally means “cannonballs deposit”. It is a building that has a typical Ottoman architectural style, and which today belongs to the school of Fine Arts “Mimar Sinan”, it also houses an exhibition center which hosted exhibitions of artists such as Dali, Michelangelo, Leonardo and many others.
Landlocked in the middle of mainly non-Muslim communities populated areas (as Karaköy) Tophane’s population was composed mostly by Turks from the provinces of the Empire looking for work. It was a Turkish bastion to remind Latins the power and the domination of the Empire.

DOLMABAHCE PALACE IN ISTANBUL (GLAMOROUS PALACE IN TURKEY)
Dolmabahce Palace built in 19 th century is one of the most glamorous palaces in the world. It was the administrative center of the late Ottoman Empire with the last of Ottoman Sultans was residing there. After the foundation of the Turkish Republic in Ankara, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk transferred all government functions to the youthful capital but on his visits to Istanbul Ataturk occupied only a small room at Dolmabahce Palace as his own. He stayed, welcomed his foreign guests and made a practical center for national, historical and language congress and for international conferences.Dolmabahce Palace was home to six Ottoman Sultans and Presidential house to the founder of Turkish Republic Ataturk.Â
Abdulmecid I is the 31st Sultan of Ottoman Empire and he ordered to build the Dolmabahce Palace in 1843. It was built in 13 years and construction cost was equal to 35 tons of gold. In 1856, administrative center of the Ottoman Empire was moved from Topkapi Palace to Dolmabahce Palace and it also became the private residence of Abdulmecid I and his family. Abdulmecit I had lived here 5 years. He passed away in 1861 and Abdulaziz succeeded to the sultanate. Abdulaziz was the brother of Abdulmecid I and he also lived in Dolmabahce Palace. Murat V became the sultan after his uncle Abdulaziz was deposed but he was mentally ill and only reined 93 days. Murat V replaced by Sultan Abdulhamid who resided in Dolmabahce Palace for 236 days.  In 1877 Ottoman Administration moved to Yildiz Palace. Later on, Dolmabahce and Yildiz Palaces were both utilized by Mehmet V and Mehmet VI. Abdulmecid Efendi also stayed in Dolmabahce Palace as a caliph. It was the home to Sultans till the abolishment of the caliphate in 1924 but only in between 1889 and 1909 instead of Dolmabahce Palace, only Yildiz Palace was used. After 1924 Dolmabahce Palace was used as the Presidential house by Ataturk and he enacted some of his really important works here, like the introduction of the new alphabet etc. Ataturk also spent his last years in Dolmabahce and he died on November 10, 1938 in Dolmabahce palace’s room. To his honor all the clocks in Dolmabahce are stopped at 09:05 that he died. Today all sections and units of Dolmabahce Palace are restored and opened to visit. The Dolmabahce Palace Complex is administered by the National Palaces Trust under the TBMM ( auspices of the Turkish Grand National Assembly ); and it is open to visitors, except Mondays and Thursdays daily between 09:00 - 16:00. It is one of the most imposrtant historic places in Istanbul that must be seen.Istanbul situated on seven hills and it is a city of palaces as well. Please, do not miss to visit Dolmabahce Palace if you come to Ä°stanbul, the city of palaces. This Palace is one of the most fascinating palaces in the world built in 19th century, Ottoman architecture and it was located in an area of 110 thousand squaremeters. It is located along the European shore of the Bosphorus between the ports of Besiktas and Kabatas. the plan arrangement of Dolmabahce Palace is an adaptation of traditional Turkish house in grandeur scale, constructed with brick internal walls, stone external walls and timber floors. After your visit with the breezes in the halls of the palace, it will be a great pleasure for you to rest at the cafe in the garden and have a cup of coffee with the fascinating Bosphorus scene. If you have a chance to visit Dolmabahce Sarayı in June, you'll get fascinated by the glory of magnolia trees.Dolmabahce means “Filled up Gardenâ€. Until 17th Century this site was one of the bays in Bosphorus. This bay was a natural harbour. Beginning from the XVII the Ottoman Admirals anchored the naval fleet here and also the traditional maritime ceremonies had taken place in this harbour when the Ottomans conquered Istanbul. In centuries, it had been started to be filled up time to time and became one of the unique gardens of Bosporus called Dolmabahce. The construction of the Palace completed in 13 years and cost five million Ottoman gold pounds ( the equivalent of 35 tons of gold ). Sultan Abdülmecit I, who was the 31st sultan of the Ottoman Empire commisioned the construction of the palace. This marvelous palace displays the power and richness the Sultans had. For the Ottoman treasury this palace was an unnecessary expenditure and because of the external debt, it had became totally empty. This palace had been empty intermittently for 32 years since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. In Dolmabahce Palace the last 6 sultans and Caliph Abdulmecit lived and after him most of the subsequent sultans preferred to live in the smaller palaces that they had built on their own along the Bosphorus. This palace was used also by Ataturk with the declaration of the republic. When Ataturk visited Istanbul, he used Dolmabahce Palace as his residence. On 10th of November 1938 Ataturk passed away in this palace after a long period of sickness and then it was converted in to a museum.
