Clogh Oughter Castle
Prehistoric relict landscapes of Cavan Burren
Clough Oughter Castle is a ruined circular castle, situated on a small island in Lough Oughter, four kilometres east of the town of Killeshandra in County Cavan.
The castle is located in what was once the historic Kingdom of Breifne. In the latter part of the 12th century, it was under the control of the O'Rourkes, but it seems to have come into the hands of the Anglo-Norman William Gorm de Lacy. While the exact date construction began is unknown, it is estimated to have started in the first quarter of the 13th century.
In 1233, the O'Reilly clan took possession of the area and completed the castle. They retained it for centuries in the midst of their ongoing conflicts with the O'Rourkes and with members of their own clan. It was there that Philip O'Reilly was imprisoned in the 1360s.
Lough Oughter is regarded as the best inland example of a flooded drumlin landscape in Ireland and has rich and varied wildlife. The number of whooper swans which winter in the area represents about 3% of the total European population, while the lake also houses the largest concentration of breeding great crested grebes in the Republic of Ireland.
Lough Oughter is a popular angling lake and is also popular with canoeists and boating enthusiasts. The Lough Oughter complex, along with Killykeen Forest Park, is a designated Natura 2000 habitat, Special Area for Conservation (SAC), and Special Protection Area (SPA) under EU legislation.
Canoes and kayaks are available for hire from Cavan Canoe Centre, which also offers guided boat trips around the lake and out to the castle.
Lough Oughter Keep, Cavan, Ireland
Lough Oughter Castle is a ruined circular castle on a small island in Lough Oughter, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) east of the town of Killeshandra in County Cavan, Ireland.
While the exact date construction began is unknown, it is estimated to have started in the first quarter of the 13th century.
The last phase of the Castle's life occurred during Irish Rebellion of 1641-53.
In 1649 Owen Roe O'Neill, the commander of the Ulster Army died at the castle. For the remaining years of the rebellion it's leader Philip O'Reilly retained Lough Oughter Castle as an island fortification, holding it a total of 12 years before it was besieged.
Finally, The British Cromwellian forces had defeated the surrounding indigenous Irish armies, pushed the defenses back to the lake, recovered the lake-shore and proceeded to bombard the castle from positions in the townland of Innishconnell. When the castle finally fell in March 1653, it was the last stronghold in Ireland to fall to Cromwell's forces.

Clogh Oughter castle occupies a man-made island on Lough Oughter and probably dates back to the Anglo-Norman de Lacy’s in the 13th Century. The castle changed hands several times in its history and it was here in 1649 that Eoghan Roe O’Neill, one of the great Irish Chieftans died. The castle was badly damaged in 1653 during a Cromwellian siege and has remained abandoned ever since.
Castle Saunderson, County Cavan Ireland - Castles in Ireland
Castle Saunderson, County Cavan, Ireland - Ireland Trip -Travel to Ireland -Castles in Ireland-Irish
When it comes to the different castles in Ireland that one could visit and check, we have to say that there are plenty of those which would take your breath away from the way they look from the outside and might even make you more amazed if you are allowed to come in and see what they have from inside there.
We have been to different castles in Ireland and Northern Ireland before and we usually get amazed by the kind of history carried behind every single one of them - the amount of time it has been standing or some of the myths that might be held about it.
Castle Saunderson is one of those different castles in Ireland which we managed to visit recently and which dates back to the 1840s; a good amount of time! The Saunderson Castle was acquired by the Saunderson family during the Ulster plantation and there was a notable member of the family who was born there known as Edward Saunderson who was the founder of the Ulster Unionist Party. The original castle was inhabited by the O'Reilly's of Breffni and thus was formerly known as Breffni Castle in the 14th century. Later in 1977, Alexander Saunderson sold the castle to a businessman who was willing to transform it into a residence but which never happened and served instead as a hotel until it was damaged by a fire; it has undergone three different fires in the past.
There is actually a long history behind this castle - mostly about moving from one person to another - and there were three different fires taking place in it in the past. The castle served as a modern hotel that is ready to welcome 46 persons and there are also camping areas around the place which will be capable of welcoming about 1,000 campers - lots of changes done to this place.
While being there with the kids, it was just about walking around the castle which seemed empty and not working, reading all those things around it, and enjoying the building as a whole and the green land that is surrounding it - yet too unlucky for us to not be able to come inside and see how this castle looks like from inside there.
There are lots and lots of things that one could see and witness in Ireland and Northern Ireland and from those different attractions, there are different castles that one could enjoy - and which also welcome visitors inside. From those which we have been to before in Ireland, we visited before the Dunluce Castle which is located on cliffs in Northern Ireland and where some scenes and shots from the famous movie series, Game of Thrones, were once taken (
Dunluce Castle was not the only castle we have managed to visit and enjoy but there were others as well, such as the Oranmore Castle in county Galway and which is an old Norman castle ( we have also been to Belfast Castle where we took different pictures, videos, and even brought here a 360 degree video; Belfast Castle is also a good choice for those searching for a different wedding place or want to have an afternoon tea (
There is also the Enniskillen Castle where there is also a museum there for visitors to check and see what it has to offer them and which is located in county Fermanagh close to Lough Erne ( While visiting the Castlewellan Forest Park where there is also a castle along with the different walks, the maze, and many more things as well (
There are lots of wonderful and beautiful places that dates to years and years back but we always fall in love with castles - no reason why - maybe because they resemble fairy tales, beautiful buildings, and another world that is more prestigious and different - which we believe was the same case with the Saunderson Castle when it was still occupied by its first owners or even those who came directly after them.
Since we have mentioned how much we love fairy tales then we should also point out to that event we have attended in Portadown People's Park which was called Fairytale Forest and which the kids enjoyed following up with it and searching for their favorite characters in order to come to the end point and get their reward (
There are lots of places that one could actually visit while being in Ireland and after getting the chance to look at this beautiful castle. From those which we definitely recommend on the top of the list, you could visit and check the Giant's Causeway - which also took its part in GOT movie - ( and which will offer you a magnificent view, and you could also visit the Ballintubber Abbey which is located in county Mayo and which we also love because of being placed in front an old building (
