Cobalt Silver Mining Town
Cobalt, Ontario has been designated Ontarios Most Historic Community for the key role it played in opening the north to settlement and launching Canadas massive mining industry. The discovery of massive silver deposits in 1903 launched a world wide silver rush.
In many ways, Cobalt was the last of the wild west mining boom rush towns and the first of the modern mining communities of the 20th century.
This footage was taken by amateur film maker Anthony Giachino in the years following the silver boom (1920s 30s). Mr. Giachino was a grocer and he ran his grocery store in an old mining headframe (Coniagas No. 4). He stored the meat in the shaft which acted as a natural refrigerator.
The Coniagas Headframe/grocery store features at the beginning of the footage.

Silver Mining In Ontario (1925)
Ontario, Canada. The Cobalt Silver mining area is featured. L/S of the mining town. Various tracks for transporting silver and houses or outbuildings for processing. Camera pans across the settlement. M/S of two men working underground in the mines. They operate a drilling tool. Closer shot of the men drilling a hole in the rock face. C/U of the tool pounding into the rock. Good C/U of man lighting several tapers which have been inserted into holes in the rock. He walks away leaving them to burn. M/S of the rubble left after the explosion (explosion not seen). Workers walk across the rubble. Two men greet each other by tipping their hats as their paths cross. M/S of men pointing to a silver vein. C/U of the vein. C/U of man putting his pick against the vein - this shows how massive it is - it looks unreal. The ore is loaded into chucks. M/S of man pulling ore down into a container on wheels then pushing it along.
A small electric underground train travels towards the camera. It pulls many trucks containing ore. M/S of miner pushing the truck into a lift. It is then lifted up and out of shot. An aerial cable system is used to transport the ore to the mills. Shots of containers of ore travelling on the cable system - exteriors and interiors of their departure from the mine and arrival at their destination. Worker catches a container and tips it into a vat. Men work on a conveyor belt sorting the ore - good shot from high angle. C/U of a large piece of silver held in a hand. Men sort ore as before. A vessel holding melted ore is pulled from a furnace. The silver is poured into moulds. Man tips the moulds over and silver ingots drop out. Two men work together , one pulls ingots from the furnace, the other stacks them on a barrow. The barrow is pulled and pushed through a doorway. Story ends with the intertitle. And that was the end of our perfect day.
Was a Pathe Pictorial item.

Rise and Fall of Silver Islet
This is my second professional documentary film which I sold to CBC. It tells the story of a tiny island off Lake Superior's North Shore that was a 19th century engineering milestone. A 1300 foot deep silver mine once operated on storm-battered Silver Islet. The film opens with a song composed and sung by Bill Houston renown for his soundtrack for the first Imax film North of Superior (1971).
Rise and Fall of Silver Islet was shot in 1985 in an old mine in Cobalt, Ontario and at the Steam Pump house museum when it used to operate in Kingston Ontario. The film was shot with a tiny budget on my old 16mm Bolex Camera. It is 25 minutes long.
Produced and Directed by Peter G. Elliott. Written by Robert Sandler. Instrumental music score by Cathy Elliott and Roger Cormier. Many of my friends are playing miners in this. This presentation is dedicated to my friend Scott Hoey who narrated it in his Rod Serling style. Scott passed away in 2009. The film is also dedicated to Cathy Elliott who passed in 2017.
