Filadelfia Coffee Resort & Tours:
Mercado de Artesanias San Antonio Aguas Calientes (textile shop)
Chiquimula Hotel (La Caballeriza/Los Laureles):
I am not a coffee drinker, but of course if I am in Guatemala and doing a tour of a coffee farm in Antigua, then I need to try some coffee! This tour was super informative and entertaining. Our guide at Filadelfia Coffee Resort & Tours was funny and tried his best to help us understand the process of making Guatemala's famous coffee. Did you know that their largest export is to Japan? That's right, the Japanese love Guatemalan coffee. After hanging out at Filadelfia Coffee Resort & Tours for a bit, we then got on the road to Chiquimula where the group I was traveling with (Vivid Roots & Hopscotch the Globe) would be volunteering for the next few days.
On the way to Chiquimula, we stopped by San Antonio Aguas Calientes, which is a town in Guatemala famously responsible for creating most of the textiles and artisanal products. We went to the Mercado de Artesanias to see how the weavers create clothes, table clothes, hair tires, and more all by hand.
We then continued on our trek to Chiquimula, Guatemala! We finally arrived to our hotel, which was part of a horse ranch called Los Laureles (La Caballeriza). This hotel is beautiful by the way! If you want a relaxing retreat in Guatemala then hotel La Caballeriza is the place to go.

Within those 2 weeks I visited 5 cafes. Each has its won characteristics, such as with the best view, vegan & keto friendly, with a cat, very local and stylish. In this episode, come to explore with me. I promise, I won't bring you to Starbucks (because there is none here????)!

Onnit True Antigua Guatemala Arabica Dark Roast Coffee
Great coffee is not just about the bean, it’s about everything put into it from the land it’s grown on and the people who take care of it. Having sampled coffee from the best regions in the world, we believe that this is simply the best dark roast coffee out there.
One of the reasons for this is that our Arabica is grown in the ideal conditions of the world-renowned Antigua Guatemala.

Guatemala Food Cooking School in Antigua, Guatemala:
Guatemala Food Cooking School is an immersive cultural experience for the culinary adventurers out there who are visiting Antigua, Guatemala. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Guatemala Food Cooking Class as part of my volunteer trip with Vivid Roots & Hopscotch the Globe. While in Antigua, we did a walking tour and learned how to cook authentic Guatemalan Food. Some of the Guatemalan dishes that we prepared and ate were Jocón, Rellenitos, Elote Loco (crazy corn), fresh corn tortillas, traditional Guatemalan tostadas, Guatemalan style rice & more.
This was an amazing experience to have in Guatemala with a wonderful group of people. Not only was it a great bonding time with the group of volunteers, but it was also a great learning environment. After a few drinks and some music, we danced our way through the kitchen and were ready to eat the Guatemalan food we had just prepared ourselves. This was definitely a night to remember.

A Guatemalan man empowers coffee growers who have fallen on hard times
A Guatemalan man is helping farmers find new uses for coffee.
The country of Guatemala has 19 different micro-climates. Those diverse climates make it a paradise for coffee growers.
But climate issues are being blamed for a leaf rust epidemic that destroyed more than 20-percent of the nation’s coffee crop. It also forced many coffee farmers to find other lines of work or leave the business altogether.
Our Game Changer is from Guatemala but is now living in Japan. And he’s making a difference for the small producers of coffee. Meet Carlos Melen.
Some 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed around the world every day. Evidence compiled by the Climate Institute shows rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns impact coffee crops from Africa to Central America.

Antigua, Guatemala is a city in Guatemala with so much history and beautiful architecture. As soon as you enter Antigua, the first thing you'll notice are the colorful buildings. I was fortunate enough to do this walking tour and this volunteer trip right before the volcano erupted. Although I was safe, many locals were affected and have become victims to this tragedy. I was able to see Antigua through the eyes of a local with our guide Diego, who was born in Antigua. He showed us the lookout point where we could see the best views of all of Antigua, Guatemala. I had an amazing time with Hopscotch the Globe and Vivid Roots as we got to know Antigua a little bit better, before continuing on our volunteer trip.
