Vernon, France is on the River Seine, over 70 kilometers from Paris, in Normandy. I went here for lunch, because although I enjoyed my second trip to Giverny all morning, this time seeing the famous Monet house, gardens and lily pond as well as his and his family's tomb, Vernon is larger and has more choices of restaurants. (Giverny is, face it, a tourist trap, albeit a gorgeous and charming one.)
I walked along La Mairie, their city hall, toward the Collègiale de Notre Dame, an old church. (A clip of its interior is on my other channel on YouTube, CUTECATFAITH.) Typical Norman architecture, very old, still stands in Vernon -- half-timbered buildings, with beams and lintels at crazy angles. In this region there are also many troglodyte houses and spaces, and thatched roofs, historic castles and plenty of boating and fishing. The region known as Le Vexin between Paris and Normandy is gorgeous.
It was a bit windy, so I lost my Spring hat briefly. I saw very few commercial spaces or residences empty and up for rent, lease or sale. The town appears to be thriving, but very peaceful.

Start with a visit to Giverny and the Monet House and Gardens then walk to Vernon's Our Lady Collegiate Church Notre-Dame to hear the organ accompany a recorder in concert.

St-Paul de Vence in the south of France
St-Paul de Vence in the South of France is one of the best preserved and prettiest medieval villages in all of Europe. We're going to take you on a walk straight through the middle of St-Paul on the main pedestrian lane from one end of town to the other and later working to show you all the little side streets. Located on the Cote d'Azur along the French Riviera in Provence, this village is one of the prettiest in Europe. The cobblestone lanes here are among the finest that you will ever see.
When you reach the far end of the main lane you exit through another gateway arch and then there's a staircase that leads your right up onto the wall with a lovely viewing platform where you can see across the distant landscape.
The walks round the walls are in part wider, and the small gardens of the houses sloping down to them, with the dark foliage and golden fruit of their orange groves, form a beautiful foreground to the lovely views that are visible off in the distance in every direction.
Saint-Paul de Vence's town wall dates from the 16th century as we see it today and it hugs the contours of the rocky spur on which the village stands, forming a 1 km perimeter that has undergone only slight modifications since the 16th century.
We have created many more movies about this area, the Côte d'Azur, the French Riviera that you can find on our channel, so have a look. You'll see programs about Cannes and Monaco, Monte Carlo, St-Paul, Vence, Villefrance, all around through the region including Antibes, and we really enjoy using Nice as our home base to explore this entire region.
Slavery and Global Public History Conference: Facing or Deflecting the Past in Exhibitions
Saturday, Session 1
Publics, as much as historians and large cultural institutions, define how difficult history is remembered or forgotten. Smaller and independent sites and communities increasingly tell local stories of slavery and history that reflect local public memory and desires to remember or disremember a specific past.

SUMMARY
=======
The Roaring Twenties refers to the decade of the 1920s in Western society and Western culture. It was a period of economic prosperity with a distinctive cultural edge in the United States and Western Europe, particularly in major cities such as Berlin, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, and Sydney. In France, the decade was known as the années folles ('crazy years'), emphasizing the era's social, artistic and cultural dynamism. Jazz blossomed, the flapper redefined the modern look for British and American women, and Art Deco peaked. Not everything roared: in the wake of the hyper-emotional patriotism of World War I, Warren G. Harding brought back normalcy to the politics of the United States. This period saw the large-scale development and use of automobiles, telephones, motion pictures, radio, and electrical appliances. Aviation became a business. Nations saw rapid industrial and economic growth, accelerated consumer demand, and significant changes in lifestyle and culture. The media focused on celebrities, especially sports heroes and movie stars, as cities rooted for their home teams and filled the new palatial cinemas and gigantic sports stadiums. In most major democratic states, women won the right to vote.
The social and cultural features known as the Roaring Twenties began in leading metropolitan centers, then spread widely in the aftermath of World War I. The United States gained dominance in world finance. Thus, when Germany could no longer afford to pay World War I reparations to the United Kingdom, France and the other Allied powers, the United States came up with the Dawes Plan, named after banker, and later 30th Vice President, Charles G. Dawes. Wall Street invested heavily in Germany, which paid its reparations to countries that, in turn, used the dollars to pay off their war debts to Washington. By the middle of the decade, prosperity was widespread, with the second half of the decade known, especially in Germany, as the Golden Twenties. The spirit of the Roaring Twenties was marked by a general feeling of novelty associated with modernity and a break with tradition. Everything seemed to be feasible through modern technology. New technologies, especially automobiles, moving pictures, and radio, brought modernity to a large part of the population. Formal decorative frills were shed in favor of practicality in both daily life and architecture. At the same time, jazz and dancing rose in popularity, in opposition to the mood of World War I. As such, the period is al ...
