Grabbing drinks at a bar in the middle of the ocean: Pelican Bar Jamaica
Pelican Bar, located on the South Coast of Jamaica in Black River, is a must if you’re on this side of the island. It uniquely sits on a sand bar in the middle of the beautiful Caribbean Sea. If you’re leaving from the Black River it’s about a 45 minute boat ride. It was a little choppy for us on the way there but very smooth on the way back. I suppose depending on the time of year or day you go determines the smoothness of your ride. We didn’t mind at all either way.
Episode Breakdown:
I start this episode off with a re-cap of my long run that day, a 12 miler.
Then I get into the journey from Negril to Black River then to Treasure Beach. I’m joined by my brother Winfield, my cousin Chris who was visiting from NY and my Father.
We eat at a restaurant called Cloggy’s in Black River
Trip Advisor Link:
In Treasure Beach we stayed at a good family friend’s hotel, Sunset Resort. Kory, the owner, was celebrating his 50th birthday so we were privileged to join him in his birthday celebrations.
Sunset Resort Website:
Also in Treasure Beach we stopped by Jakes Hotel which is pretty close to Sunset Resort, a 3 minute walk. My brother got a massage there and I just hungout with my cousin.
Jakes Hotel Website:
After we ate at a restaurant called Jack Sprat which is directly adjacent to Jakes, actually the same owner.

From there we make our way to Pelican Bar

Luddy Samms: Under The Boardwalk, Drifters Beach Bar, Negril, Jamaica 2017
Luddy Samms has started the annual, international Blues on the Beach Jam Extravaganza every January at his Drifters Beach Bar in Negril, Jamaica. Musicians from Jamaica, USA, UK, Germany and Canada performed blues and roots music from 3pm to 9pm under the blues skies of the Caribbean...and near Mile One on the seven mile long beach
The Drifters Beach Bar is a new beach bar along the 7 mile long Negril beach. The bar was recently opened by ex-Drifters singer Lunny Samms of the world famous band The Drifters in January 2014. Every afternoon from 3-7pm is an all-out jam session featuring local musicians and others from around the world doing all 'roots' music: blues, RnB, Soul, reggae, country, jazz...at one time there were musicians/singers from 5 different countries jammin' together on one song. We all believe this spot will become the hottest place on the beach.

The One Love Bus Tour was designed to bring business to the much needed local bars, and to give tourist the opportunity to witness authentic Jamaican culture. 7 stops, 7 native bars, all leading up to the most amazing sunset the world has to offer. I undoubtedly recommend the One Love Bus Tour for anyone staying in the Negril area, as I have been many times and never been disappointed. Shot with a GoPro 3 Black Edition. Please enjoy, One Love.

Terry Gillespie: Time Tough, Drifters Beach Bar, Negril, Jamaica 2018
When Terry Gillespie was young he experienced first hand the music of Miles Davis, Howling Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Bob Marley & The Wailers, and The Rolling Stones. A question he asks himself every day is: if I was one of my heroes, how would he do it? 'What Would Bo Diddley Do? A song I wrote a couple of years ago was about that exact thing.
Terry doesn't play 'covers' so much as he plays interpretations, allowing the original to be his first influence. His music is Blues based. You could quote Willy Dixon the blues is the root and the rest is the fruit'. In his case the rest is a mix of jazz, R&B, Reggae, Soul and African rhythms, music that caught the popular ear, reinterpreted for the now.
He also writes his own songs. There is already tonnes of music out there. Given that, the first thing he does is look for a space in what is out-there already, a gab that he can fill with one of his tunes.
Terry loves to lead bands. It is probably what he is most good at. As a band leader he was influenced by performing in orchestras in his early years. He watched his heroes work with their bands. Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus and Howling Wolf all brought out the best in their bands, and he tries to do the same.
