The colonial American charm of Williamsburg Plantation makes it the perfect spot for a family vacation.
Historic Area
Wondering what you'll do and see in Williamsburg? If you're into history, you'll be in good company! Known as America's Colonial Capital, history abounds in Williamsburg. Colonial Williamsburg, a living history museum, depicts the life and times of Colonial America. At nearby Jamestown Settlement, the story of America's first permanent English settlement (13 years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts) and the Virginia Indians they encountered is told through film, gallery exhibits and living history. Fast forward to the Revolutionary War with a visit to historic Yorktown. In October, 1781, the Siege of Yorktown culminated with the British surrender to American and French forces under George Washington's command ending the six-year Revolutionary War and setting the stage for a new government and nation. Who said history can't be fun? And when in Yorktown, don't miss a visit to the Riverwalk area where you can walk on the beach, visit their antique and specialty shops and experience unique dining opportunities.

U.S. Army - Duty, Honor, Country
When the American Revolution broke out, the rebellious colonies did not possess an army in the modern sense. Rather, the revolutionaries fielded an amateur force of colonial troops, cobbled together from various New England militia companies. They had no unified chain of command, and although Artemas Ward of Massachusetts exercised authority by informal agreement, officers from other colonies were not obligated to obey his orders. The American volunteers were led, equipped, armed, paid for, and supported by the colonies from which they were raised.
In the spring of 1775, this army was about to confront British troops near Boston, Massachusetts. The revolutionaries had to re-organize their forces quickly if they were to stand a chance against Britain's seasoned professionals. Recognizing the need to enlist the support of all of the American seaboard colonies, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress appealed to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia to assume authority for the New England army. Reportedly, at John Adams' request, Congress voted to adopt the Boston troops on June 14, although there is no written record of this decision. Also on this day, Congress resolved to form a committee to bring in a draft of rules and regulations for the government of the Army, and voted $2,000,000 to support the forces around Boston, and those at New York City. Moreover, Congress authorized the formation of ten companies of expert riflemen from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, which were directed to march to Boston to support the New England militia.
George Washington received his appointment as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army the next day, and formally took command at Boston on July 3, 1775.

Dressing the Past: Historical Reenactors & Exploring American Identity Through Costume
The periods of the American Revolution and the Civil War remain topics of pride and contention, subjects of popular writing, and inspiration for costumed performance. In 18th-century garments at Colonial Williamsburg and in 19th-century uniforms on Civil War battlefields, modern Americans celebrate the nation's history, and at the same time take the opportunity to air their political and cultural opinions while exploring significant aspects of their identities. Their costumes, differing from their daily dress, help them fulfill personal desires while they join with others in collective public performance.

Construction stretched over twenty-six years through the Depression, World War II, and funding shortages.
The Parkway allows for a stress-free drive from Yorktown to Jamestown that avoids the regular traffic
The parkway is made of stone pavement to give the feel of old-timey highways
The parkway connects Virginia's historic triangle: Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown.
The parkway runs along the York River and millions of cars travel this route each year.
The parkway was built to resemble highways of the past so the two-lane river-gravel road doesn't have any line-markings.
The parkway is only two lanes with a center lane for passing and the maximum speed limit is a mere 45 miles per hour
Although the park closes at sunset the parkway stays open to traffic
Construction began in the spring of 1931 in Williamsburg.
The parkway construction was hit with delays from the start.
There were design and routing conflicts. Limited funding due to the Great Depression and World War II stretched construction over a 26-year period.
The parkway was not completed until 1955 but is considered an architectural success as the design was meant to fit seamlessly into the natural and historical beauty of Virginia.
Roadtrippers.com, says the Parkway is America’s Most Calming Scenic Drive, with it’s “mostly lined with trees that block any views of modern society

Jantzen Club Villas in Williamsburg, Virginia
Presented by Atlantic Sotheby's International Realty
For more information go to
The history of villa living can be traced back to the early Romans and their exemplary skills in building extraordinary villa homes and communities. The early Romans discovered how private roads beckoned them into intriguing enclaves, tucked away from everyday living. They experienced the feeling of privacy that these special places could offer. Jantzen Builders has borrowed freely from these early concepts of villa living in recreating an exclusive haven in Virginia. What better place than Williamsburg, where early colonists dreamed of a new way of life? Jantzen Club Villas are positioned between two natural bodies of water, a veritable oasis. A private road leads you to this prestigious, inviting villa community, where trees surround eight unique and magnificent homes. Wrapped inside the stately exterior of colonial architecture is an innovative, state-of-the-art floor plan and an invitation to live life to the fullest. Take a leisurely stroll to the quaint Marina Village, reminiscent of Old Cape Code. You can meander among the boats. Chat with your friends on private docks, or watch the ducks peacefully paddling across the waters of the marina. The golf course, country club, marina, pool, tennis courts, fitness center, fine restaurants and even a private beach await your arrival. Rare opportunity to own in the private community of Jantzen Club Villas. This inviting one story home features a detached guest cottage, a 2 car garage with separate golf cart entrance. A wildlife connoisseurs dream, this luxurious home features a stately brick courtyard situated on a small lake featuring abundant wildlife. Many additional features including an outdoor shower, Italian fountain, hot tub and a built in shed.
