Colorado Springs, Colorado was founded in 1881 by General William Jackson Palmer. The city was nicknamed Little London. Colorado Springs sits at the base of Pike's Peak.
Pike's Peak reaches 14, 115 feet. This majestic mountain dominates the skyline and is the highest summit in the southern front of the Rocky Mountains. It is a center of tourism.
One of the most beautiful and startling features of the city is named Garden of Gods. This unique and special geological feature brings a unique perspective to the city.
Some of the most popular things to do in and around Colorado Springs are hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping and hunting.
Whether you are looking for a day hike or a weekend adventure, Colorado Springs has something to do.
Some key attractions visitors to Colorado Springs should experience include: The Cog railway reaches the highest altitude, 14,115 feet at the summit of Pike's Peak. The view from the summit allows you to see entire front range and on a clear day, almost Denver. Pikes Peak region
For more down to earth adventures, explore Cave of the Winds. This cave systems was discovered by early settlers of Colorado Springs in 1881. It is now home to a theme park as well as cave system with tours. Some of the attractions at Cave of the Winds include: The Bat-A-Pult Zipline. This is a 1200 ft vertical ride. It also includes the Wind Walker Challenge Course and of course the infamous Terror-Dactyl Canyon swing!
A Little further up the canyon you will come to Santa's Workshop at North Pole, Colorado. This is an excellent Christmas themed amusement park to bring kids in summer or winter. There are chair lift rides, trains, various carnival rides, magic shows and much much more!
Another popular family destination is the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. This zoo was rated the 6th best zoo in America!
You should also feel free to check out the Colorado Zip Line adventure.
Colorado Springs is also home to several military installations including Peterson Air Force Base, Fort Carson Army base, Cheyenne Mountain NORAD, and the United States Air Force academy.

Today's Colorado Trail Run Series video was in the very popular Garden of the Gods. Compared to many of my recent trail runs, these trails are considerably easier. In total I logged 5.8 miles and the vertical gain was approzimately 700 feet. Garden of the Gods is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Colorado Springs area. Parking is free but can fill up quickly. I had no issue as I showed right at sunrise. Later in the day, however, parking can be a problem.
Before going, go to the Garden of the Gods website and consult the map. None of the trails are overly long within the area and you will have to develop a plan to connect several smaller trails to make whatever distances you are hoping to achieve. Highly recommend it! It is gorgeous.

14erProjectVideo
This weekend I finished up a goal to reach the top of the 58 Colorado 14ers (14,000 foot peaks). This is something that took about 10 years for me to complete, and am proud of the accomplishment. I realize this accomplishment receives varying degrees of merit from a mountaineering perspective depending on who you ask. Rather than looking at this as a mountaineering feat, I perceive it as more of an adventure in self discovery and just a reward to me for the general enjoyment for the things in nature that I have in my backyard of this beautiful state I now call home. These mountains are very majestic and are icons to the state of Colorado and the United States. They hold many dangers, but the reward seemed to always outweigh the risk for me. I hold people like Frank Konsella & Britanny Walker Konsella that have skied all of these peaks as well as Mike Bean and Dave Baroussa that have skied several of the most committing 14er lines in the highest regard for their efforts on these peaks.
This experience allotted me several new friends, rekindled friendships with old friends, strengthened friendships, and allowed my wife and I to grow closer. Because I’m a nerdy engineer, I had to track some metrics: This goal required more pre 0300 wake-ups than I can possibly quantify, approximately 420 miles of back country travel (hiking, climbing (ice & rock), scrambling, boot packing, skinning, skiing, etc.), over 185,000 feet of vertical gain, and over 12,000 miles of driving to get to trailheads all of these peaks. I anticipate returning to several of these peaks to ski or re-climb.
I was lucky enough to have over 40 partners to help me through this endeavor. I would like to thank the following partners for helping me along: Jeremiah Abplanalp, Bridget Bryson, Keith Castilow, Tim & Joleen Cooper, Margarette, Dave & Chase, Ben & Lindsey Davis, Andy Farish, Scott & Allison Farish, Gene Farish, Hans & Tracy Flinch, Randy Flint, Jed Flint, Sarah Haberkorn-Ward, Tim Heiser, Pete Hernandez, Peter & Jing Kerchner, Ryan Krum, Darrel & Susan Lamb, Mike Macaulay, Ryan Manning, Jeremy Morrey, Aaron, Jenna & Denali Provance, Mike Records, Matt Reetz, Jared Sam, Jordan Scherameda, Jenny & Wapiti Shipley, Steve Smith, Todd Ward, Jeff Welch, Nick Wilkinson, Sam Wolfson
Although I didn’t get a chance to climb these peaks with Hans Flinch, Tracy Baiotto Flinch, Mike Records, and Ken Nefflin, I was able to ski from the Summit of Mt Evans with them.
Thanks to George Berry for watching Wapiti so many times over the past couple of years.
And, a special thanks to my wonderful wife Jenny Berry Shipley for putting up with me in general while I pursue goals like this and other backcountry adventures.
I would also like to thank CU Sports Medicine for repairing my torn bicep tendon, and Panther PT for the 6 months of rehab this winter/spring to help get me back into shape to be able reach the summit of the remaining 13 peaks I had on the list in 2015.
I tried my best to make my alma mater WVU and home state of West Virginia proud by carrying and displaying the “Flyin’ WV” flag on nearly all of these summits. And was able to do it fellow alums Aaron Provance, Jenna Provance, and Keith Castilow in the process.
Colorado Experience: Glen Eyrie Castle
Enter the fascinating history of Colorado Springs’ founding estate. How did a refined English Tudor-style castle come to exist in the vast, unsettled West? Created by railroad tycoon and Civil War General William Jackson Palmer, Glen Eyrie Castle is adjacent to Garden of the Gods and the iconic views of Pikes Peak. Brand new archaeological findings reveal intriguing details of castle life!

A 14 Day Road Trip Through Colorado : Colorado is gorgeous. Of all the places across the globe that I've seen and explored, the San Juan and Colorado Rockies remain two of my favorite areas in the world. Incredible wild life, amazing natural beauty, pristine wilderness, rugged mountains, great fly fishing, and of course awesome food in Colorado's small mountain towns. Perfection.
The video itself explains the back-story behind the trip, but you can also find photos from the road at: or the stories behind these moving images at

Our 2015 Colorado Adventure
We traveled to Colorado in June of 2015 to explore the sites and celebrate our cousin's wedding in Estes Park. We shot this footage on a GoPro Hero4, Apple iPhone, and Canon PowerShot.
Sites include: Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, and Manitou Springs
Take a trip down the Royal Gorge funicular incline railway 2012
Take a ride on one of the few funicular railways in the United States. This one is located at the Royal Gorge bridge park near Canon City, Colorado. The incline was built in 1931 and has a gauge of 3 feet. The cars are pulled up or lowered down using thick cables. As you can see in the video, space is very tight so difficult to get good video. Unfortunately this tram was damaged in a fire in 2013 and has not been operational since.
The Royal Gorge bridge is one of the highest bridges in the world at 955 feet. Damage was repaired from the fire to the bridge and it is currently open to the public. Filmed in August, 2012.

2016 Colorado Elk Hunting Season Recap
This season was bittersweet. Bonds were made. Friendships were strengthened. Many exciting adventures shared. But despite 22 days of 100 miles of bow-hiking over 30,000 vertical feet the beautiful and elusive creatures of the woods evaded us for yet another season.
Now we must wait and dream as the recent rich memories of the ghosts of the forest torments us for yet another 11 months.
I can't thank all the guys at Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear (rmsgear.com) enough for all of the continued guidance and suport. I'm thankful for their friendship and the opportunitiy to stand on their shoulders as I pursue this epic challenge.
