Traveling into the Tanzanite Mines of Tanzania, Africa
Steve Moriarty travels to Tanzania to go direct to the source of Tanzanite. During this trip he brought along local photographer, Matt Bigelow, to document their trip. This video shows their journey to a Tanzanite mine that they went to and explored. They traveled through Tanzania to Merelani, where Steve's friend owns and operates a Tanzanite mine. Here they met, talked to, and had lunch with the local miners before going into the actual mine itself. Steve's main goal of this trip was to bring back tanzanite, but he also met with the miners and gem dealers in the area to purchase some other natural gemstones that were mined close by. These gems included, Merelani mint garnet, umbalite garnet, zircon, and moonstone. To see images from our blog on this trip visit:

#3.1 Safari Capital Arusha Inside Out
It’s time for the second Africa Inside Out country: TANZANIA! World famous because of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro crater, the Kilimanjaro and – last but not least – Zanzibar! If you go about Tanzania the wrong way, it can turn into one huge touristy mess; so it’s even more important to go off the beaten track wherever and whenever you can. We started our search in Arusha, safari capital of the world: should you skip this city – like most typical safari tourists do – or is it worth a visit? Chapter 3 of Africa Inside Out has started: Northern Tanzania! Join us.
◎ About Africa Inside Out ◎

◎ About Charlie and Charlie's Travels ◎
Hi, I'm Charlie! Some time ago (in 2014) I started an internship in Kenya. I haven't left since, because I fell in love with Africa and started my own travel agency, Charlie's Travels. It's specialised in off the beaten track tours, because we think this continent is so much more than just safari tours and beaches. We believe that for the real Africa experience, you need to go beyond the tourist traps. Africa has so many stereotypes and preconceptions. By making cool and relevant content, we want to show you a different side of the continent! We want to create new routes and awesome adventures, which will make you want to travel here and see it for yourself.

Come&See Adventures Safari en Tanzania | Hype Explore

Starting in Arusha, we not only went to all the major national parks, we also visited a school, a local community and a Masai Village.
We also stayed at some pretty incredible lodges right in the middle of the Serengetti Wildlife Preserve, in the middle of the Tarangire National Park and our favourite was overlooking the massive Rift Valley.

Tanzania week 4&5
So a little later then expected the video of week 4 & 5.
I chose not to upload a video every week, because things will get boring when you see me doing the same stuff over and over again!
Living next to the road. Arusha region, Tanzania, December 2017
'Living next to the road' series.
Project admitted at the Street Photography Awards 2018
I took these photographs in Tanzania, next to the roads of the Arusha region, in December 2017.
Along the route, I could see many people walking along the road and the sides of the road were full of activity when crossing the villages or their vicinity.
Many stores that sell phone credit, drinks and snacks emerge. There are stalls selling fish, fruits, roots, vegetables, spices, pots, pans, brooms or car parts. People gather, play, go to the car and motorcycle workshops or to the beauty salon, buy in stores, wait for the bus ...
Some young people sit with their bikes talking and smoking while people pass by. Other people come to look for a telephone credit, to buy, or simply they are at the door of their house spending their time and protecting themselves from the sun under a tree or an umbrella.
The contrast between the traditional and the modern is remarkable, the rural is mixed with the urban and the primitive with technology.

Tour and Travel in Tanzania and Zanzibar
SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Serengeti National Park is a vast treeless plain with thousands, even millions of animals searching for fresh grasslands. As the largest national park in Tanzania, the Serengeti attracts thousands of tourists each year. The best months for wildlife viewing are between December and June. The wet season is from March to May, with the coldest period from June to October. The annual migration of millions of zebra and wildebeest takes place in May or early June. This migration is one of the most impressive natural events and the primary draw for many tourists.
Large herds of antelope as well as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, bat eared fox, hunting dog and jackal are also found in Serengeti National Park. Nearly 500 species of bird have been recorded on the Serengeti. Many of these are attracted to the swamp area. ‘Serengeti’ means an ‘extended place’ in the Maasai language.
NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA
Located between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is home to the famous volcanic Ngorongoro Crater and one of Tanzania’s most popular wildlife viewing areas. This huge volcanic crater has a permanent supply of water which draws all kinds of animals who stay in this area rather than migrating. Visitors come here primarily for viewing large game and bird watching, but also of interest in the conservation area is the Olduvai Gorge. This important archeological site has revealed ancient skull and bone fragments that have delivered critical information about early mankind.
LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
Lake Manyara National Park is comprised of forest, woodland, grasslands, and swamps. Two-thirds of the park is covered by water and Lake Manyara is host to thousands of flamingoes, at certain times of year, as well as other diverse bird life. The highlight of Lake Manyara Park is the large population of elephants, tree-climbing lions and hippos that can be observed at a much closer range than in other parks. This park is also home to the largest concentration of baboons in the world. Wildlife drives, canoeing (when water levels are high enough), mountain bike tours and bird watching are the most popular activities in Lake Manyara National Park.
MAFIA ISLAND
Mafia Island draws divers and snorkelers from around the world to the undersea world protected by the Mafia Island Marine Park. The best months for diving are October to March but the best weather on Mafia Island is May to October, March and April are months of heavy rain. Mafia Island Marine Park has excellent coral gardens, an abundant variety of fish and a relaxed diving atmosphere. Countless birds and over 400 species of fish can be seen in the area. Mafia Island is also a traditional breeding site for the green turtle, which are unfortunately close to extinction.
TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Tarangire National Park was established in 1970 and is best visited in the dry season from July to September when the animals gather along the river. During the dry season, Tarangire National Park has one of the highest concentrations of migratory wildlife. Wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the lagoons. One of the most noticeable highlights of Tarangire National Park is the baobab trees that dot the grassy landscape.
ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK
Arusha National Park, although smaller than most in Tanzania, has a range of habitats that consist of the forest of Mount Meru, Ngurdoto Crater in the southeast section of the park, and Momela Lakes, a series of seven crater lakes. Black and white Colobus monkeys are easily spotted in the forested area while the marshy floor of the crater is dotted with herds of buffalo, zebra and warthog. Momela Lakes is home to a large selection of resident and migrant waterbirds. People come here to see wildlife and also to climb Mount Meru.
RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
Ruaha National Park is the least accessible park in Tanzania and as a result the landscape remains relatively untouched. Birdwatcher’s can enjoy over 400 species of bird that are not found in northern Tanzania, and the river, spectacular gorges, and majestic trees are especially appealing to photographers. As Tanzania’s second largest park, Ruaha has large herds of buffalo, elephant and gazelle. The concentration of elephants are some of the largest in Tanzania. The Great Ruaha River is the main feature of Ruaha National Park providing magnificent wildlife viewing on the banks. The river also provides much of the electricity to Tanzania through a hydroelectric dam at Kidatu.

Mount Meru Game Lodge and Animal Sanctuary Tanzania - Tour and Review
Join me on a tour and review of the Mount Meru Game Lodge and Animal Sanctuary near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. About 50 minutes drive from the airport this lodge was created in 1959 and still family owned and run. There are cottages dotted around the lush green grounds as well as many animals to view in the sanctuary in the grounds and close to the cottages. I show you around the property, take you through one of the standard rooms and show you some of the animals in the sanctuary.
I stayed here whilst on a safari with Titan Travel called Wild Plains of Tanzania. Watch my Tanzania playlist to see the other lodges I stayed at - as well as highlights of the safari and animals seen.
