What would happen if California was split up? | The Economist
California cleaving, an animated infographic. Splitting up the golden state isn't easy.
Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube:
Splitting up the Golden State isn't easy. California's the most popular state in the Union - home to one out of every eight Americans. It's also the richest with a GDP of around two trillion dollars - that's more than India and almost as big as Russia.
There have long been calls to chop it up, most recently by a gadfly Silicon Valley investor, into areas called:
1.) Jefferson - sparsely populated with tiny Reading as its largest city.
2.) Northern California - perhaps keeping Sacramento, the state capital, as its seat of power.
3.) Silicon Valley - based around San Jose this already considers itself a land apart anyway.
4.) Central California - centered on Fresno, currently the state's fifth largest city of half a million.
5.) West California - with LA the biggest city which would be the most populous of the new states.
6.) And Southern California - based around the coastal city of San Diego.
Two of the new States would be America's richest and poorest by income per person, beating Connecticut and Mississippi for the titles. most of the others are around the American average of forty-four thousand dollars a year.
By population the speculative states would range between fewer than a million to more than 10 million - the others are closer to the American median of around five million.
But breaking up is hard to do. The public university system is clustered in just a handful of places. Water, always a tricky topic in the West, is most in-demand where it's least in supply. And it would present electoral college problems because it would divide one blue state into areas of red republicanism. But for the idea to fly it needs the support of Californians, the state legislature, and the American Congress and that, as they say, ain't gonna happen.

Police Shoot Unarmed Black Man With Hands Up [CAUGHT ON TAPE]
Charlie Kinsey, 47, was shot by an officer while trying to help a man with autism from the assisted living facility where Kinsey works.
I'm like this right here, and when he shot me, it was so surprising, Kinsey told WSVN-TV in Miami. It was like a mosquito bite, and when it hit me, I'm like, 'I still got my hands in the air, and I said, 'No I just got shot! And I'm saying, 'Sir, why did you shoot me?' and his words to me, he said, 'I don't know.'
So far, no video has surfaced of the actual shooting, but Kinsey said he still had his hands in the air when officers fired at him.
The video from Monday's incident also showed Kinsey's 23-year-old autistic client playing with a toy truck.

GOOD MORNING AMERICA'S HOMEPAGE:
Sailing the Eagle Barque: America's Tall Ship is Training the USCG Cadets
The USCG Cutter Eagle Barque is America's tall ship sailboat. You will see and hear the story of how this amazing tall ship and square rigger, the USCGC Eagle is manned by U.S. Coast Guard Cadets sailing the seven seas. Hear the story of how it became the only active duty tall ship sailing vessel in the U.S. military.
From the USCG press kit:
ABOUT CGC BARQUE EAGLE USCGC
...This Eagle was built in 1936 by the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, and originally commissioned as Horst Wessel in 1936. Originally operated by Germany to train cadets for the German Navy, the ship was a reparation for the United States after World War II. In 1946, a U.S. Coast Guard crew - aided by the German crew still on board - sailed the tallship from Bremerhaven to its new homeport in New London, Connecticut. Eagle returned to Bremerhaven for the first time since World War II in the summer of 2005, to an enthusiastic welcome.
Built during the twilight era of sail, the design and construction of Eagle embody centuries of development in the shipbuilder’s art. Te hull is steel, four-tenths of an inch thick. There are two full-length steel decks with a platform deck below. The raised forecastle and quarterdeck are made of three-inch thick teak over steel, as are the weather decks. Eagle eagerly takes to the elements for which she was designed. Effortlessly and gracefully, she drives under full sail in the open ocean at speeds up to 17.5 knots. Currently Eagle’s homeport is the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Maryland, as part of a Service Life Extension Project that will keep the ship away from its standard homeport of New London, Connecticut, for several years. At the end of this restoration period Eagle will return to New London, where she will rest along the pier on the Tames River near the Coast Guard Academy when not on a training sail.
Te Coast Guard Academy was originally founded in 1876 when nine students boarded the Revenue
Cutter Dobbin. Approximately
1,000 men and women attend the Academy each year, all of whom will sail at one time or another on America’s only active duty square-rigger...
To maneuver Eagle under sail, the crew must handle more than 22,000 square feet of sail and five miles of rigging. Over 200 lines control the sails and yards; every crewmember, cadet and officer candidate must become intimately familiar with the name, operation, and function of each line.
A permanent crew of eight offcers and 50 enlisted personnel maintain the ship year round. They provide a strong base of knowledge and seamanship for the training of up to 150 cadets or officer candidates at a time. On the decks and in the rigging of Eagle, young men and women get a taste of salty air and life at sea. They are tested and challenged, often to the limits of endurance. Working aloft, they meet fear and learn to overcome it.

Top 10 Surprising And Awesome Things Prisoners Get To Have in Jail
Obtaining an education has long been considered an essential component in attaining personal success. As a result, many endeavor to locate those institutions of higher learning that will fulfill this purpose. Knowledge, however, is not the only discernible characteristic needed for a productive and successful career. Integrity, discipline, and honor (among others) are also laudable and desired traits that need to be developed. Yet these social qualities are seldom emphasized in traditional academic curriculum.

New London, Connecticut
1997
Susette (Suzette) Kelo drives by a run down house along the Thames (Tames) River that has been for sale for awhile. Even though the house is run down, she falls in love with it and buys it. She spends months completely renovating the 107-year old Victorian-style cottage, painting it pink. The house had a great view of the water, and was in a working-class neighborhood called Fort Trumbull. Unfortunately, the neighborhood had been in decline for years, as there were few decent paying jobs nearby. But Susette didn’t care. She loved her little pink house and its view of the harbor. She soon met a dude named Tim LeBlanc, who helped her do exterior work on the house. Eventually the two would get married and live there together.
But then, in January 1998, real estate agents began knocking on her door, offering lots of money to buy her house on behalf of “an unnamed buyer.” Kelo was suspicious, and turned down all offers. However, agents began to tell her if she didn’t sell her house, she would be forced out of her home by the city due to something called “eminent domain.” Eminent domain, you say? What the heck is that?
Eminent domain is the right for a government to just take private property for public use. In other words, if the government thinks it is in the best interest of all its citizens, it can kick you out of your house. Both the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment and the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution say the government can use eminent domain, but it just requires “just compensation.”
Susette Kelo didn’t care how much money New London was offering her. She loved her little pink house, and wasn’t going anywhere. Neither were 14 other Fort Trumbull residents. They decided to fight. Wait a second, why was New London trying to kick them out?
Well Pfizer, a multinational pharmaceutical corporation, was opening a new facility in New London, right next to the Fort Trumbull neighborhood. Part of the deal were plans to “fix up” Fort Trumbull, including building a new hotel, conference center, and fancy housing for the scientists working at Pfizer. This would require major government help. $73 million in help. Yep, the state of Connecticut would pitch in $73 million to kick out the Fort Trumbull residents, demolish their homes, and update the area with new roads and utilities.
Once Kelo and the other Fort Trumbull residents who didn’t want to leave their homes found out about this, they sued the city. Meanwhile, an organization called the New London Development Corporation, or NLDC, was already demolishing homes. By the time of the trial, which went to the New London Superior Court in July 2001, the NLDC already had acquired around 80 buildings and destroyed most of them.

Campus tour of Stanford University located in Palo Alto, California. Absolutely gorgeous campus that is well maintained and manicured. One of the most prestigious universities in the world and being next to Silicon Valley it is a science, engineering, tech powerhouse. Inspiring atmosphere and culture. Love the building architecture (Mission Revival) and how all the buildings match, similar to CU-Boulder. It would be amazing to be a student here. This campus is so ginormous and dense it was difficult to explore all the areas given my limited amount of time.

Driving Downtown - Buffalo 4K - New York USA
Driving Downtown Streets - Main Street - Buffalo New York USA - Episode 74.
Starting Point: .
Buffalo is a city in Western New York and the seat of Erie County, on the eastern shores of Lake Erie at the head of the Niagara River. As of 2014, Buffalo is the state's second most populous city after New York City with 258,703 residents, and with a population of 1.13 million, the metropolitan area is the 50th largest in the United States.
Buffalo grew significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries as a result of the Erie Canal, railroads and Lake Erie, providing an abundance of fresh water and an ample trade route to the Midwestern United States, while grooming its economy for the grain, steel and automobile industries during the 20th century. After an economic downturn in the latter half of the 20th century, Buffalo's economy has transitioned to sectors that include financial services, technology, biomedical and education.
Residents of Buffalo are called Buffalonians. The city's nicknames include The Queen City, The Nickel City, and The City of Good Neighbors.
Economy
Buffalo's economic sectors include industrial, light manufacturing, high technology and services.
The State of New York, with over 15,000 employees, is the city's largest employer.[57] Other major employers include the United States government, Kaleida Health, M&T Bank, the University at Buffalo, General Motors, Time Warner Cable, and Tops Friendly Markets. In banking, Buffalo is the headquarters of M&T Bank and First Niagara Bank.
Buffalo is home to Rich Products, Canadian brewer Labatt, cheese company Sorrento Lactalis, Delaware North Companies[58] and New Era Cap Company.
The loss of traditional jobs in manufacturing, rapid suburbanization and high labor costs have led to economic decline and made Buffalo one of the poorest U.S. cities with populations of more than 250,000 people. An estimated 28.7–29.9% of Buffalo residents live below the poverty line, behind either only Detroit,[59] or only Detroit and Cleveland.[60] Buffalo's median household income of $27,850 is third-lowest among large cities, behind only Miami and Cleveland; however the metropolitan area's median household income is $57,000.[61] This, in part, has led to the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area having the most affordable housing market in the U.S. The quarterly NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index (HOI) noted nearly 90% of the new and existing homes sold in the metropolitan area during the second quarter were affordable to families making the area's median income of $57,000.[citation needed] As of 2014, the median home price in the city was $95,000.[62]
Buffalo's economy has begun to see significant improvements since the early 2010s.[63] Money from New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo through a program known locally as Buffalo Billion has brought new construction, increased economic development, and hundreds of new jobs to the area.[64] As of March 2015, Buffalo's unemployment rate was 5.9%,[65] slightly above the national average of 5.5%.[66] In 2016, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis valued the Buffalo area's economy at $54.9 billion.
Sports
Buffalo and the surrounding region is home to two major league professional sports teams. The NHL's Buffalo Sabres play in the City of Buffalo, and the NFL's Buffalo Bills play in suburban Orchard Park, New York. Buffalo is also home to several minor sports teams, including the Buffalo Bisons (baseball; an affiliate of the MLB's Toronto Blue Jays), Buffalo Bandits (indoor lacrosse) and FC Buffalo (soccer) as well as a professional women's team the Buffalo Beauts (Hockey). The Buffalo Bulls are a Division I college team representing the State University of New York at Buffalo, and several other Buffalo-area colleges and universities are also active in college athletics.
