Convent of Christ - Tomar, Portugal
We had previously visited Tomar and the convent one of the top tourist attractions in Portugal, but this time it was Lukas turn to get to know a remarkable feet of architecture, listed as Unesco World Heritage since 1983. The convent and castle complex is quite large and it takes a while to visit everything but it's well worth it, it's an amazing site filled with Templars history. We do recommend spending more than one day or else you might feel overwhelmed with the size of the convent and have no time left to visit the city or to just sit down and have a relaxed cup of coffee without feeling like you are missing out.

Convent of Christ in Tomar (UNESCO/NHK)
Originally designed as a monument symbolizing the Reconquest, the Convent of the Knights Templar of Tomar (transferred in 1344 to the Knights of the Order of Christ) came to symbolize just the opposite during the Manueline period -- the opening up of Portugal to other civilizations.

Tomar Convent of Christ Portugal
The Convent of Christ (12th century - 18th century) is the name given to a set of historical buildings in the city of Tomar, Portugal. Tomar Castle:
The beginning of its construction dates back to 1160 and is closely linked to the beginnings of the kingdom of Portugal and the role then played by the Order of the Templars, having been reconfigured and expanded in subsequent centuries, when the Order of Christ was located there.
Built over hundreds of years by some of the most important masters and architects working in Portugal, this architectural ensemble includes diversified buildings, almost all of remarkable heritage relevance. the Manueline church and the Renaissance convent. Its present configuration reflects the successive functions for which it was intended and the architectural typologies of the historical periods in which it was built.
The Convent of Christ stands out as one of the most important monumental ensembles in Portuguese territory and is classified as a National Monument (1910) and a World Heritage Site (1983)

The castle of Tomar was built around 1160 on a strategic location, over a hill and near river Nabão. It has an outer defensive wall and a citadel (alcáçova) with a keep inside. The Keep, a central tower of residential and defensive functions, was introduced in Portugal by the Templars, and the one in Tomar is one of the oldest in the country.

Convento Cristo | Tomar | Portugal
