How a new grain could help combat climate change
Scientists in Minnesota and Kansas are developing a grain called Kernza, which, unlike most of our food crops, is a perennial plant with a whole host of environmental benefits. While it’s still far from hitting the market widely, food producers big and small are starting to get on board. Megan Thompson reports as part of our Future of Food series, supported by the Pulitzer Center.

In The Blind
In the Blind, a powerful new documentary that traces the unique traditions and rich culture of waterfowl hunting in Louisiana’s Sportsman’s Paradise and explores the sport’s relevance in a global conservation effort to preserve and restore waterfowl populations, migratory flyways and fragile habitat of this imperiled region.
In the Blind transports audiences across Louisiana from coastal marshes to flooded forests to trace the history of some of the region’s most famous hunting clubs and public land hunting spots, along with the traditions and cuisine that make up this unique, renowned culture. The program features an immersive, “day in the life” of the sport’s most passionate participants, from the hunters and guides, to the card players, storytellers, cooks, decoy carvers, call-makers, wildlife conservationists, land managers and environmental journalists.
For this documentary, LPB partnered with New Orleans-based filmmaker Emma Lou Reid, producer, writer and director of In the Blind. For three years, Reid - a Minnesota native and Louisiana transplant - immersed herself in the culture, politics and landscape of duck hunting. Prior to working on In The Blind, Reid co-produced the National Telly Award winning documentary, Finding Common Ground.
LPB’s President and CEO, Beth Courtney, will interview Reid about the project during the statewide premiere of In the Blind, Thursday, December 12 at 7PM on LPB. The film will also be steaming live at lpb.org/live and on the LPB App (LPB broadcast encore Sunday, December 15 at 6:30PM). Viewers will be offered exclusive opportunities during the LPB broadcast, including a hunting camp excursion, a kayak/birdwatching tour of Bayou Manchac led by Reid, and other unique duck hunting items.
In the Blind will also air on WYES in New Orleans on Wednesday, December 18 at 8PM (encore Saturday, December 21 at 3PM).
Major funding for In the Blind is generously provided by Lipsey's, Acadian Ambulance Service and Mr. & Mrs. W. Clinton Rasberry Jr. and W. Clinton Rasberry III.

Richard Bresnahan: The Taste of the Clay
After spending nearly 4 years in Japan as an apprentice for the Nakazato Family, Richard Bresnahan returned to St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota with a wealth of pottery knowledge and skills. With the blessing of Father Michael Blecker and the Benedictine Monks at St. John’s, he set up a completely indigenous pottery studio, building the largest wood firing kiln of its kind in North America and utilizing a nearby clay deposit.
In September 2013, Richard and his team fired the Sister Johanna Becker kiln, named after his art history teacher and mentor, for the twelfth time. Preparations included seven weeks of loading, ten days of firing, a week of cooling, a week of unloading and nine months of cleaning. Richard’s wife Collette organizes the chefs and the dinners that serve up to 300 people. The firing is a community-building event with many volunteers returning year after year.
In the documentary, Richard talks about his pottery and the related philosophies that guide his life and his teaching.
“When you’re becoming an artist, especially working in a clay material, you’re having what we call tsuchi-aji; “tsuchi” means clay, “aji” means taste. You’re learning the taste of the clay. And so that’s a metaphor for your taking in your exterior environment into your interior environment. You’re developing a spirituality to your material.”
Production funding provided by the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund and by the members of Prairie Public

I made my way to Lanzhou, in search of the best Chinese street food and halal Chinese muslim food. I found a ton of street food and specialty halal snacks. Lanzhou is in the northwest of China, close to the far west Xinjiang province, and is home of the Hui people, and the food is fantastic! There was a lot of Chinese street food and Islam muslim Chinese cuisine. Just like you, I love street food around the world, and I travel for food. I came here to eat!
►The BEST VPNs For China:
Street food in China is something I'm always looking to find more of! So I flew to Lanzhou, China and have been trying Chinese Muslim Hui Halal Street food non stop. Best Street Food in China I've tasted! The Chinese food is so good in Lanzhou! I've eaten street food in Bejing, street food in Shanghai, street food in Chengdu, and street food in Hong Kong, all of which has been amazing, but I have to say that the chinese street food in Lanzhou has been some of the best!
When you think of China, you probably don't think of Islam and Halal food, but that's exactly what you'll find in the Northwest. I made my way for a food trip to the dusty and bustling classic Silk Road city of Lanzhou specifically to try the unique halal food of the Hui people. This is the side of China not many people see, and I came here to have an authentic travel experience through food. I found a lot of food reminiscent of countries further west, with insane amounts of lamb and beef leaving me absolutely speechless.
Here are the addresses for the places I ate Chinese Hui Muslim Halal Street Food of in Lanzhou, China. You can show a taxi driver these addresses and he will bring you there:
