Get more Tips here! destinationtips.com
These fishermen of the Yulong River, Yangshuo, China, use the 1,300 year-old technique of cormorant fishing!
They first tie a knot around the base of the bird's gullet, release it into the water where it catches a fish, is unable to swallow it, and brings it back to its master.
The fisherman then gives it a smaller snack as reward, much like a trained dog!
Visit Yangshuo, China to see this ancient art in action!

Cormorant Fisherman Timelapse, Yangshuo, China
Behind the scenes timelapse of our photoshoot with a Cormorant Fisherman (Mr. Huang) in Yangshuo, China.
This was the highlight of our trip in Yangshuo, to photograph the famous cormorant fisherman. This is an organized photography tour from a local agency in Yangshuo. Everything was pre-arranged including our own model, yes he's been a model already for 20 years and quit his job of being a Cormorant Fisherman which is no longer a feasible source of income.

Cormorant Fishing in Yangshuo, China 2012 - Part 1
This Chinese tradition that's slowly dying out for lack of popularity among the younger generation:
Cormorant is the bird that's been tied to the boat by a rope. The fisher put a ring on the bird's neck so it does not swallow the fish it finds. After pulling the bird from the water, the fisher takes out the fish. The bird is not being fed the whole day and just gets some fish after it did its job. As the bird gets older, it also get too lazy because of depression or lack of reward for its efforts. Then, it's no longer used for fishing, but just breeding. The younger birds are more hard-working & optimistic than their parents who know the bitter truth of life in captivity...
Not as cruel as what Americans do to their chicken and farm animals on a daily basis if you think about it...

Video taken from my solo trip to YangShuo, China... Cormorant Fishing! The birds catch fish in their mouths but are unable to swallow due to the strings wrapped around their necks. The best part is around 2:00 where they are swimming around more shallow waters. Enjoy!
