Sabrina and leave Placencia and head to Punta Gorda in southern Belize. We take a water taxi and chicken bus to get there. Once in Punta Gorda we head slightly north to an incredible organic farm - Cotton Tree Lodge.

Cotton Tree Chocolate Company in PG
The Mayans have had chocolate or Cacao in their lives, the tree grew naturally in the jungle and was used for many things. Only just recently has it become the sweet substance we all enjoy today. Cotton Tree Chocolate that is start to finish a family run business. The factory in PG makes small batches to keep quality high and trust us it is delightful. The staff did not wish to appear on cam so we have only used their voices to tell us the process for turning this bitter seed into sweet chocolate ..
CottonTree Lodge Punta Gorda Toledo Belize jungle
Remote, wild, incredible hospitality, and worth every penny. The most amazing week I ever had was at the CottonTree lodge in southern Belize. Mayan ruins, howler monkeys, kayaking the Moho River, getting to know the staff, visiting quaint Mayan villages, trekking the jungle, learning to make organic chocolate, swimming in a cave... I can't wait to go back. When you book your trip, tell Chris (the owner) that Katie and Becky from Jacksonville sent you! ( for some strange reason I said Tobacco Caye Lodge at the beginning because that is where we are going later in the trip, but this is the CottonTree lodge.
Punta Gorda, Belize
Just a very short drive thorugh a bit of Punta Gorda in southern Belize, far less commercially exploited which makes it a much nicer and slower paced little city. There are several good places to eat, our favourite is Asha's Culture Kitchen, when we are in PG we stay at Hickatee Cottages. One of the small companies making a difference is Cotton Tree Chocolate Factory. There is so much more to do and see so come south and explore for yourself.

Che'il Cacao: Chocolate entrepreneur Julio Saqui in Maya Center, Belize
Cocoa, native to the Mayan culture, is being developed into a business by this maverick entrepreneur. Julio Saqui, a Mopan Mayan of central Belize is supporting local cocoa farmers and teaching visitors about the jungle of the Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve where his tribe once lived until removed forcibly by the government in the early 1970's.
Here he explains his fledgling 6 month old project and plans for the development of future chocolate based products. Delicious!
