Toledo District is the southernmost district in Belize, and Punta Gorda is the District capital. It is the least developed region in the country, and it features some of the most pristine rainforests, extensive cave networks, coastal lowland plains, and offshore cays. Toledo is home to a wide range of cultures: Mopan and Kekchi Maya, Creole, the Garifuna, East Indians, Mennonites, Mestizos, and descendants of US Confederate settlers.

Nim Li Punit is a Maya Classic Period site in the Toledo District of the nation of Belize, located 40 kilometres north of the town of Punta Gorda, at 16° 19' N, 88° 47' 60W. Nim Li Punit is sometimes known as Big Hat or Top Hat; the name is Kekchi Maya for Big Hat, referring to the large elaborate head-dress on a stela sculpture found on site depicting one of the site's ancient kings. Nim Li Punit is a medium-sized site from the Maya Classic Period, flourishing from the 5th century AD through the 8th century AD. It consists of structures around three plazas, including several step-pyramids, the tallest being 12.2 meters high. The site has a number of carved stelae illustrating the ancient city's rulers. The colour of blue-green pool where Maya women beat their laundry on the smooth stones gave the village its name. The banks are lined with tall shady trees. The Aguacaliente Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve in the Toledo District of southern Belize. It encompasses approximately 5,492 acres and was declared a sanctuary in 1998. The Sanctuary is critical for the preservation of biodiversity in Belize and the region. The National Park protects the central wetlands areas which consist of three fresh water lagoons and a hot-spring connected by a number of creeks hence the name Aguacaliente. It is co-managed by the Aguacaliente Management Team , a consortium of people from adjacent villages.

Lubaantun is a pre-Columbian ruined city of the Maya civilization in southern Belize, Central America. Lubaantun is in Belize's Toledo District, about 42 kilometres northwest of Punta Gorda, and approximately 3.2 kilometres from the village of San Pedro Columbia, at an elevation of 61 metres feet above mean sea level. One of the most distinguishing features of Lubaantun is the large collection of miniature ceramic objects found on site; these detailed constructs are thought to have been charmstones or ritual-accompanying accoutrements. Uxbenka is a pre-Columbian Mesoamerican archaeological site located in Belize's southernmost district of Toledo. An urban settlement of the pre-Columbian Maya, it is the earliest-known Maya polity in the southern Belizean lowlands, with evidence of occupation dating to the Early Classic period of Mesoamerican chronology . It is one of five major Maya sites in this region, whose archaeological sites also include Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun. Settlement of Uxbenka has been suggested to have occurred originally by Peten peoples. The site is approximately 40 square kilometers in size, and Uxbenka is referred to as a medium sized polity ). Uxbenka rose shortly after the expansion of another Mayan site: Tikal. The site is thought to have been first inhabited during the late Preclassic period.

Vacation in Belize - March 2017 - Day 1 - Chaa Creek Resort

Our first 2 days in Belize where we spent the night at the Chaa Creek Resort located in the Cayo District. We stayed in the camp part of the resort in a casita. Our first activity in Belize was horse back ridding to the farm which was excellent. Thank you Teddy for giving us this incredible tour!

Punta Gorda, Belize

Just a very short drive thorugh a bit of Punta Gorda in southern Belize, far less commercially exploited which makes it a much nicer and slower paced little city. There are several good places to eat, our favourite is Asha's Culture Kitchen, when we are in PG we stay at Hickatee Cottages. One of the small companies making a difference is Cotton Tree Chocolate Factory. There is so much more to do and see so come south and explore for yourself.

Totally local flavours this buffet style meal was started by the Colemans to feed the workers on the Bigg Falls Bridge and been here ever since ... all local all when its ripe type of thing .. incredible we will go back and we don't hesitate to recommend this off the road place..
