Crab Cove, Alameda
Crab Cove in Alameda is a great place to hang out for a picnic. There are lots of bench tables and when the tide is out, the water is so low, kids can basically run around with the birds in the mud and moss. It is next to Crown Beach, so if you are into heavier swimming or water sports, you can enjoy those activities as well.

Background about federal surplus property on Crab Cove
Public land: The General Services Administration (GSA) gave land to the State of California that became Robert Crown Memorial State Beach in Alameda in 1961. Part of the land was used to build McKay Avenue, a state-owned street providing access to the park, with a utility easement to the federal government for contiguous government buildings.
State of California, City of Alameda & EBRP Agreement: In November 1966, the State of California joined with the City of Alameda and the East Bay Regional Park District in an agreement that would turn the park, plus two miles of Alameda’s beach front, over to the East Bay Regional Park District for management and development.
Crab Cove 1st Estuarine Marine Reserve in California : In 1982, Crab Cove became the first Estuarine Marine Reserve in California. This is a protected area for wildlife.
NO ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT when it is zoned again to Open Space as we did on 2014 with the 1st parcel and now, with the last parcel in 2018. Everything on Mckay Avenue has been built before 1982, before CRAB COVE was declared a marine reserve. Any other buildings that is not ZONE to OPEN SPACE would need to bring in their own utilities which WILL impact the environment, which will mean that they would need to cut-off water supply to the parks which they have shared with this one parcel with one utility & water since 1966.
FRIENDS OF CRAB COVE is a collaborative organization consisting of persons representing neighborhoods, businesses, and schools adjacent to the main entrance to Crab Cove Regional Park, as well as those adjacent to Washington Park and all of Alameda’s shoreline; and, all persons who enjoy the use of Crab Cove, Washington Park and Alameda’s shoreline. Members are working to ensure that the Federal Building complex on McKay Avenue is acquired for expansion to existing recreation space and educational and historical activities. Existing Measures WW and D set requirements that the land be acquired and zoned as open space and FRIENDS OF CRAB COVE propose that the land be used to expand and enhance Crab Cove’s open space and educational and historical activities. Members are opposed to the Federal Government’s current proposal to turn the existing Federal Building complex into a homeless facility/drop in sleeping center.
Crab Cove Visitor Center and adjacent Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach, part of the longest beach on San Francisco Bay. Some 1.5 million people use the park annually, mostly to picnic or stroll along the beach or, in the warmer months, play in the gentle surf. But with all the nature happening here, park naturalists present nearly 450 programs a year about the Bay environment for students and families, including birding walks, aquarium feedings, and low-tide excursions onto the mudflat. In 2015, more than 7,200 students from 269 classrooms participated in field trips.

Alameda is a fantastic city here in the East Bay. In this video I give the 5 top reasons why I love living here. The community & lifestyle make for a great quality of life.
Alameda used to be this undiscovered gem in the East Bay. I have lived in Alameda since 2000 and have been Realtor since 2005. I have helped many wonderful people buy and sell homes here. However I work all over the Bay Area but focus my practice on the East Bay cities of Alameda, Oakland, Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, Richmond and San Leandro.
If your considering moving to Alameda or in need of a dedicated real estate professional I hope you will contact me so we can meet and discuss about how I can help you.

Alameda, California
Alameda is a city in Alameda County, California. It is located on Alameda Island and Bay Farm Island, and is adjacent to and south of Oakland and east of San Francisco across the San Francisco Bay. Bay Farm Island, a portion of which is also known as Harbor Bay Isle, is not actually an island, and is part of the mainland adjacent to the Oakland International Airport. The city's population was 79,277 in 2016.
The island Alameda occupies what was originally a peninsula connected to Oakland. Much of it was low-lying and marshy, but on higher ground than the peninsula and adjacent parts of what is now downtown Oakland were home to one of the largest coastal oak forests in the world. The area was therefore called Encinal, Spanish for forest of evergreen oak.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23 square miles of which 10.6 square miles is land and 12.3 square miles is water.
Although Alameda's nickname is The Island City (or simply the island), the current city occupies two islands as well as a small section of the mainland.
