Consolidated Gold Mine, Dahlonega, GA
December 31st, 2018
The Consolidated Mine was a gold mine in Lumpkin County, Georgia, United States, just east of Dahlonega. Like most of the area around Dahlonega, the placer mining on the land on which the mine is located probably started during the Georgia Gold Rush.

Consolidated Gold Mine, Dahlonega, Georgia.
In about 1880, hard rock was reached on what is now called the Consolidated Gold Mine Property. After several years of testing by Capt. Ingersoll, Antonio, and others it was then determined what was providing the gold to the outside world, not veins of gold but veins of quartz containing gold. Solid rock is layered by weight when still in a molten state. The heavier metals like gold and iron stayed with the heaviest rock of the area- quartz. Most quartz veins containing gold run an average of 2-3 inches thick, if that big. The largest can be at around 8 thick. On the Dahlonega side of the mountain a man named Knight found an area where several extremely large veins were running together forming one giant vein. One so huge that it wasn't measured in inches but in feet- 22ft. thick -which is still today one of the largest veins of quartz discovered in the world containing gold. Soon the huge vein system was found to be going down-hill at a 45 degree angle heading deeper underground and below the water table. After a brief hiatus, mining of the Knight or Glory Hole vein continued when a group of northern investors bought up 7,000 acres of land around the discovery site, and all the smaller mines with it, forming the Dahlonega Consolidated Gold Mining Co. in 1895. Out of business in 1906, the Consolidated has been reported to be the very first attempt at systematic, deep underground mining in the east and quickly became a legend even in its own time.
Whatever the reason: price of gold too low; being below the water-table the gold stuck inside the iron making it too expensive to mine; material not produced fast enough for the 120-stamp mill; or scamming among the investors, the tunnel system was totally abandoned for 75 years until new life was instilled by a coal mining family from Kentucky wishing to change occupations after several generations.
Today the mine runs under a Wal-Mart just outside of downtown Dahlonega. The town still retains a frontier feel and many old buildings remain standing from as far back as the 1830s. Dahlonega, Georgia was the site of the 1839 gold rush, the first gold rush in the United States. The gold rush prompted the bitter Cherokee removal and prepared the masses for the California gold rush of '49. Dahlonega became a boom town on the edge of civilized Georgia land overnight, and the creation of the mint in Dahlonega led to the eventual creation of North Georgia Agricultural College, now North Georgia College and State University, the premier military college of Georgia.

This was once part of an old gold mine in Georgia. The mountain had several mines and mills, operations began in the 1800's and the area was used for mining up until the mid-1900's. As I explored around I saw remains from one of the old mines. It was like taking a journey back in time...

Dahlonega GA Road Trip - gold panning on the Chestatee River
Earlier this year we took a road trip to Dahlonega, GA. Talked to some of the locals and they mentioned gold panning on the Chestatee River. Parked at a public access point and hiked down to the river. Found some color and had a nice time.
Old Chestatee River Diving Bell in Dahlonega Ga
For more than a century, the secrets of the Diving Bell were held beneath the murky waters of the Chestatee River. On Oct. 18, 1876, the Diving Bell and its boat sank under mysterious circumstances. While ending the short career of the only manned submersible gold mining operation in Georgia, it did not end the mystery of how it sank or where it came from.
Unlike a submarine, which is self contained and moves under its own propulsion, the Diving Bell is an open-bottomed pressurized submersible which is tethered to a surface vessel. Raised and lowered through a well in the boat, this diving bell was built specifically to mine for gold at the bottom of the Chestatee River.
The diving bell and boat made their appearance in September 1875. Within a little over a year, the dreams of the Loud Mining Company would end as their boat disappeared under mysterious circumstances beneath the river depths, taking the diving bell with it on its final descent.

Old Lumpkin County Courthouse and Gold Museum in Dahlonga Ga
Lumpkin County's old courthouse -- located on the downtown square in Dahlonega -- was built in 1836. This structure was used until a new courthouse was completed in 1965, at which time the former courthouse became the Dahlonega Gold Museum. In 2006 the old courthouse was designated as the oldest existing couthouse in the state by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Lumpkin County's first courthouse was a log cabin at the gold rush town of Auraria. In 1836, the county built a two-story brick courthouse, which served until a new courthouse was built in 1965.

DeSoto FallsThe DeSoto Falls are located in Lumpkin County in the Chattahoochee National Forest DeSoto Falls Scenic Area. According to legend Spanish armor belonging to the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto or one of his men was found near here which led many to believe that the expedition passed through this region in 1540 in their attempt to find gold.
