Explore history at Cumberland County Museum and Archives, located in the family home (c 1838) of Robert Barry Dickey, a Father of Confederation. Dickey ran his law office from here in the 1850's and ran a working farm. The museum's focuses on the county's history: industry, manufacturing, shipbuilding, stone quarrying, architecture, and dykeland farming. You will also find information on settlements, social history, and of special interest to visitors is the permanent display of the Prisoner of War Camp in Amherst from 1914 to 1918. The archive is a major resource centre for researchers and genealogists and contains detailed records of all cemeteries in the county.

The Cumberland County Genealogical Society (CCGS) was established to provide a forum for those interested in genealogy to share information and to assist in the identification and cataloging of resource material so that it can be readily available to everyone for both research and education.
Objectives of the CCGS are to collect and preserve genealogical material; promote the study of genealogical and family history in Cumberland County; further ethical practices, scientific and effective techniques of genealogical research; and, to publish and distribute genealogical material to help in the education and promotion of interest in genealogy.
Publications: Genealogy Resource Directory for Cumberland County, NS; 1905 Vital Statistics from Amherst Daily News; 1906 Vital Statistics from Amherst Daily News; Will Book A CD; Railroading in Westchester, NS; Red Cross Cookbook - Oxford, NS 1917; Memories of Hansford, NS; Down Memory Lane DVDs; CCGS Newsletter Cumberland Roots, for members published four times a year; other projects coming soon. Monthly meetings at 7:00 pm every third Tuesday of the month (except July & August), at various locations within Cumberland County. Location notification will be posted online prior to meeting. Cumberland County, Nova Scotia - Renewable Energy
The Municipality of the County of Cumberland, the Towns of Springhill and Parrsboro, and the Cumberland Regional Development Authority (Cumberland RDA) have initiated the development of the Cumberland Energy Office and have taken a leadership role in environmental stewardship by adopting a Regional Energy Strategy for Cumberland County.
The strategy focuses on identifying investment and attraction opportunities within the County and the towns of Springhill and Parrsboro that would increase renewable and alternative energy capacity including tidal, wind, geothermal, solar, and coal bed methane. Initially, the Regional Energy Strategy focuses on six strategic priorities including development of wind, geothermal, tidal, and solar energy, the adoption of Municipal Sustainability Practices, and Strategic Organization. Further, the Regional Energy Strategy is intended to influence and inform many aspects of municipal planning and sustainable community development for the next ten to fifteen years based on broad goals of community sustainability through increased energy security, economic development, population/youth retention, environmental protection, business attraction and retention, and health.
Cumberland County is rich in natural resources and is positioned to become a hub for the development of green energy, energy efficiency and energy conservation.
