On the way to the Sunday market La Batte, at Rue du Champion, we accidentally come across a variety of graffiti and street art, including that of Didier Jaba Mathieu. The Marché de la Batte (Bat market) is Belgium's oldest and largest weekly market. The name Bat Market derives from the quay wall used to land the ships, called La Batte.
The market takes place on Sundays from 8 am to 2.30 pm along the left side of the Meuse river in Liège.
It is also one of the largest markets in Europe, with a sales area of around 10,000 m². Up to 100,000 visitors come in good weather.
Here a large selection of meat, sausages, poultry, fish, wines, fruit, and vegetables is offered. Besides, you find live animals like birds, fish, dogs, cats, and goats.
For those who are interested, there are antiques, books, CDs, and records. But also household items, clothes, shoes, stockings, and hats must not be missing.
If you are hungry, you can try some of the culinary specialties. Or you enjoy a bite in one of the numerous restaurants and cafes in the surrounding area.
Right next to the market is the Curtius Museum, a museum for archaeology and decorative arts. The building was once the manor house for Jean Curtius, an industrialist and munitions supplier for the Spanish army. In 2009 it was reopened as Grand Curtius.
Today, it houses the collections of the Archaeological Museum, the Arms Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts, and the Museum of Religious and Mosan art (MARAM).
A few steps away is the L'îlot Saint-Georges, the former Fine Arts Museum of the City of Liège (BAL). The colorful crystal flowers on the facade are the work of Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel.
However, there was not enough space in the BAL. In 2011, one decided to move the museum to the island between the Meuse and the Channel. Since 2016 the collection has been housed in La Boverie.
On the way back to our apartment, we passed the opera of Liège (Opéra Royal de Wallonie).

Auf dem Weg zum Sonntagsmarkt La Batte treffen wir bei Rue du Champion zufällig auf vielfältige Grafittis und Streetart, unter anderem von Didier Jaba Mathieu.
Der Marché de la Batte (Fledermaus Markt) ist Belgiens ältester und größter Wochenmarkt. Den Namen Fledermaus Markt verdankt er der Kaimauer, die dem Anlanden der Schiffe dient. Sie wird als La Batte bezeichnet.
Der Markt findet immer Sonntags von 8:00 – 14:30 am linken Ufer der Maas in Lüttich stattfindet.
Außerdem zählt er, mit einer Verkaufsfläche von ca. 10.000 m², zu den größten Märkten Europas. Bei gutem Wetter kommen bis zu 100.000 Menschen.
Hier wird eine große Auswahl an Fleisch, Wurst, Geflügel, Fisch, Weine, Obst und Gemüse angeboten. Aber es gibt auch lebende Tiere wie Vögel, Fische, Hunde, Katzen und Ziegen.
Für Interessierte gibt es Antiquitäten, Bücher, CDs, Schallplatten. Aber auch Haushaltsgegenstände, Kleidung, Schuhe, Strümpfe und Hüte dürfen nicht fehlen.
Außerdem werden eine Unzahl kulinarischer Spezialitäten angeboten. Umliegend sind auch zahlreiche Restaurants und Cafés in den Markt mit eingebunden.
Direkt am Markt ist das Curtius-Museum, ein Museum für Archäologie und dekorative Kunst. Das Gebäude wurde als Herrenhaus für Jean Curtius erbaut. Er war Industrieller und Munitionslieferant für die spanische Armee. 2009 wurde es als Grand Curtius wiedereröffnet.
Es beherbergt nun die Sammlungen des Archäologischen Museums, des Waffenmuseums, des Kunstgewerbemuseum und des Museums für religiöse und maasländische Kunst (MARAM).
Nur wenige Schritte entfernt befindet sich die L'îlot Saint-Georges, das ehemalige Museum der schönen Künste der Stadt Lüttich (BAL). Die farbenfrohen „Kristallblumen“ auf der Fassade sind ein Werk des spanischen Künstlers Okuda San Miguel.
Da der Platz im BAL aber nicht ausreichte, beschloss man 2011 das Museum auf die Insel zwischen Maas und Kanal zu verlegen. Seit 2016 ist die Sammlung in La Boverie untergebracht.
Auf dem Rückweg zu unserem Apartment passierten wir noch die Oper von Lüttich (Opéra Royal de Wallonie).

Musée Tchantchès - Marionettentheater in Luik - Liège, le 4 jan 2015
In Outremeuse - op het eilandje tussen de Maas en de Ourthe - kon ik op de zondagmorgen van 4 jan 2015 tussen 10 en 12 uur in de Rue Surlet 56 genieten van een Luikse folkloristische attractie in een traditioneel marionettentheater.
Het verhaal van Kerstmis werd er opgevoerd met de plaatselijke held ‘Tchantchès en de Drie Koningen die geschenken brengen' tegen de slechteriken 'Herodes, de kindermoordenaar, en zijn soldaten'. Deze laatsten worden weggejaagd door Tchanchès: de soldaten vóór de pauze en Herodus zelf op het einde. Na het verjagen van de slechteriken in de typische Tchantchès-stijl, zonder wreedheden op het toneel, wordt er gezongen On a gagné, les doigts dans le nez .
Vanaf de voorbehouden eerste drie rijen leven de kinderen intens mee in de avonturen van Tchantchès met hun spontane reacties en aanmoedigingen voor hun held, die het goede omarmt en het kwade verjaagt op zijn manier.
Bij het geklop achter de schermen vóór het begin van de voorstelling, roepen de kinderen enthousiast in koor: Entrez! ; bij het verschijnen van de ster op het toneel, verwittigen zij Maria en Jozef : Il y a l'étoile !. Bij het verdrijven van de slechteriken moedigen zij hun held vurig aan: Allez Tchantchès! die hen daarna bedankt voor de hulp.
Met dank aan de organisatoren en de vriendelijke mensen die ik mocht ontmoeten op deze fantasierijke plaats.

Outremeuse, l'île de la Meuse et de l'Ourthe, m’a donné une belle surprise dans la Rue Surlet 56. Le dimanche matin du 4 janvier 2015 entre 10 et 12 heures j’ai pu profiter d'un attrait folklorique de Liège dans un théâtre de marionnettes traditionnelle: Musée Tchantchès.
L'histoire de Noël est mis en scène avec l’héros local ‘Tchantchès et Les Trois Rois’ qui suivent l’étoile et qui apportent des cadeaux. L’héro se bat contre les méchants: ‘Hérode, le meurtrier des enfants innocents et ses soldats’. Ces derniers sont chassés par Tchantchès: avant la pause les soldats et à la fin Hérode lui-même.
“On a gagné, les doigts dans le nez est chanté après avoir chassé les méchants dans le style typique de Tchantchès, sans atrocités sur scène.
Les trois premières rangées sont réservés aux enfants qui vivent intensément dans les aventures de Tchantchès avec des réactions spontanées et les encouragements pour leur héro, qui embrasse le bien et qui chasse le mal à sa prpre manière
Quand on frappe dans les coulisses avant le début de la représentation, les enfants crient à l'unisson avec enthousiasme: Entrez!; et à l'apparition de l'étoile sur la scène, ils mettent en garde Marie et Joseph: «Il y a l'étoile! .
En expulsant les méchants, ils encouragent leur héros avec ferveur Allez,Tchantchès! qui les remercié ensuite pour l'aide.
Merci aux organisateurs et les gens sympathiques que j’ai rencontré dans cette espace imaginative.

The Christmas markets are not the only reason for our little pre-Christmas tour. Of course, we also want to get to know some of the famous sights of the cities. In Liège, we start with a tour that takes us past the Christmas market, the Palais Provincial, and the City Hall.
The Palais Provincial is the former Prince Bishop's Palace and now houses the Government of the Province of Liège and the Palace of Justice. The Prince Bishop once united secular and ecclesiastical power. One built his seat in a correspondingly pompous manner.
In the Rue des Mineurs, we arrive at Belgium's well-known production of waffles. The queue in the street already announces the shop of Une Gaufrette Saperlipopette. Here the waffles are still baked according to the old tradition. On the opposite side of the street you can watch the production through large shop windows, but only at certain times.
In the shop window of an antique shop, our gaze falls on the Sleeping Beauty.
A few meters further, we find the church Saint-Antoine and the Musée de la Vie wallonne. Both are today jointly managed by the city of Liège. The old convent of the Friars Minor, dating from the 13th century, has been transformed into the Museum of Life Walloon.
If you turn a road to the east, into the Montagne de Bueren, you can see the staircase of the same name from afar. With 374 steps and a gradient of 30%, the Montagne de Bueren is Belgium's most extreme staircase.
At the foot of the stairs is Liège's most famous brewery. Here they brew Liège's brand, the Curtius {c}. After climbing the stairs, the beer in Brasserie C offers a welcome refreshment.
The staircase, built-in 1881, was named after Vincent van Bueren. He defended the town in the 15th century against the attack of the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold. Built to honor the 600 soldiers who died in the attack, it leads directly from the city center to the Monument au 14ème Régiment de Ligne and the Citadel of Liège.
It remains a mystery to us how the residents living along the staircase bring their furniture and purchases to the houses and remove the waste. What seems evident is that everyone is in pretty good health. But if you make it to the top, you are rewarded with an extraordinary panoramic view over Liège.

Die Weihnachtsmärkte sind nicht der einzige Grund für unsere kleine vorweihnachtliche Rundfahrt. Wir wollen natürlich auch die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Städte kennen lernen.
In Lüttich beginnen wir mit einem Rundgang, der uns zunächst am Weihnachtsmarkt, dem Palais Provincial und dem Rathaus vorbei führt.
Das Palais Provincial ist der ehemalige Prinzbischöfliche Palast und beherbergt heute die Regierung der Provinz Lüttich und den Justizpalast. Der Prinzbischof vereinte einst weltliche und kirchliche Macht. Entsprechend pompös wurde sein Sitz gebaut.
In der Rue des Mineurs finden wir Belgiens bekannteste Waffelproduktion. Die Schlange auf der Straße kündigt bereits das Verkaufslokal der Konditorei 'Une Gaufrette Saperlipopette' an. Hier werden die Waffeln noch nach alter Tradition gebacken. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Straßenseite kann man durch große Schaufenster bei der Produktion live zusehen, allerdings nur zu bestimmten Zeiten.
Im Schaufenster eines Antiquitätenladen fällt unser Blick auf das schlafende Dornröschen.
Wenige Meter weiter finden wir die Kirche Saint-Antoine und das Musée de la Vie wallonne. Beide werden heute gemeinsam von der Stadt Lüttich verwaltet. Das alte Kloster der Minderbrüder aus dem 13. Jahrhundert wurde in das Museum für wallonische Volkskunde umfunktioniert.
Biegt man eine Straße weiter in Richtung Osten, in die Montagne de Bueren ein, sieht man bereits von Weitem die gleichnamige Treppe. Mit 374 Stufen und einer Steigung von 30% ist die Montagne de Bueren Belgiens extremste Treppe.
Am Fuße die Treppe befindet sich Lüttichs bekannteste Brauerei. Hier braut man Lüttichs Hausmarke, das Curtius {c}. Nachdem man die Treppe bezwungen hat, bietet das beliebte Bier in der Brasserie C eine wohltuende Erfrischung.
Namensgebend für die 1881 erbaute Treppe war Vincent van Bueren. Er verteidigte die Stadt im 15 Jahrhundert gegen den Angriff des Herzogs von Burgund, Karl dem Kühnen. Die Montagne de Bueren ehrt die 600, beim Angriff gefallenen Soldaten. Sie führt vom Stadtzentrum zum Monument au 14ème Régiment de Ligne und zur Citadel of Liège, der der Burg von Lüttich.
Uns wird es ein Rätsel bleiben, wie die Anwohner dieser Treppe ihr Mobiliar und ihre Einkäufe in die Häuser bringen und die Abfälle beseitigen. Sicher scheint zu sein, dass alle über eine sehr gute Konstitution verfügen. Der Aufstieg wird mit einem wunderschönen Blick über Lüttich belohnt.
