Dag Hammarskjöld's last journey, boards plane (1961)
Death of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld. Boards the plane that will crash near Ndola in Northern Rhodesia.
New Investigation To The Death Of Ex Former UN Secretary General Hammarskjold
His plane crashed on September 17th or 18th of 1961 near Ndola, in northern Rhodesia, now known as Zambia. Early inquiries said pilot error was to blame but an independent commission in 2013 noted the possibility of hostile action and called for further investigation.
The new report by a former chief justice of Tanzania, Mohamed Chande Othman, was presented to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in August after reviewing the secret files.
Based on the totality of the information we have at hand, it appears plausible that external attack or threat may have been a cause of the crash, said an executive summary seen by AFP on Tuesday.
The plane registered as SE-BDY may have been downed by way of direct attack causing SE-BDY to crash, or by causing a momentary distraction of the pilots, it added.
Othman said there was a significant amount of evidence from eyewitnesses that they observed more than one aircraft in the air, that the other aircraft may have been a jet, that SE-BDY was on fire before it crashed, and/or that SE-BDY was fired upon or otherwise actively engaged by another aircraft.
Such evidence is not easily dismissed, he said.
That night, far from what was then Rhodesia, strange tales were slipping out from official American agency stations. In two different National Security Agency outposts, employees reported seeing or hearing interceptions of radio transmissions that indicated an outside attack on a United Nations plane.
U.S. Navy Commander Charles Southall was stationed at the NSA facility in Cyprus. In the years after the attack, he swore that he had either heard a recording or read a radio transmission transcript where a pilot reported shooting down an aircraft that night. According to Southall, this transmission had been collected by the CIA and passed to the NSA.
At another NSA listening post in nearby Greece, a U.S. Air Force officer was listening to the radio that night and reported strange transmissions. He said he believed he was listening to American ground troops on the radio, and at one point he heard an accented voice say “the Americans just shot down a UN plane.”
He recalled hearing the pilot radio in: “I see a transport plane coming low,” he claimed the voice said. “All the lights are on. I’m going to go down to make a run on it. Yes, it’s the Transair DC6. It’s the plane. I’ve hit it. There are flames. It’s going down. It’s crashing.”
