Wonder what it was like to remove the confederate battle flag from the Georgia state flag? How about his thoughts about today’s political leaders? What about his wife’s decorations and Governor’s blend pipe tobacco?
Enjoy this fun and informative episode of a true leader.

Best Place To Go In Georgia! Dahonega, GA!
Dahlonega is a city located in the north Georgia mountains. The first major gold rush in the United States took place here. Now it's a tourist and college town with a very pretty downtown. The downtown square has brick sidewalks, flowers and trees everywhere. People here do a great job making the downtown beautiful and inviting to all. The store fronts here are still alive! There're plenty of great places to shop and great restaurants to eat at. We accidentally stumbled into a restaurant called Capers On The Square. Capers has a mediterranean food vibe and the Shrimp Gorgonzola and Salman were SO DANG DANK (so dang delicious)! This city gives us a homey vibe similar to our home city Bozeman Montana.

Dahlonega - Piano
In 1829, the small town of Dahlonega, Georgia suddenly became the center of the second major gold rush in the US. (pronounced dah-LAWN-egg-uh)
Benjamin Parks, attributed by some to have started the rush, described the following chaos: The news got abroad, and such excitement you never saw. It seemed within a few days as if the whole world must have heard of it, for men came from every state I had ever heard of. They came afoot, on horseback and in wagons, acting more like crazy men than anything else. All the way from where Dahlonega now stands to Nuckollsville there were men panning out of the branches and making holes in the hillsides .
Numerous gold mines were illegally developed in the area. Miners entering into the Cherokee Nation lands came into conflict with the Cherokee, whose territory they had tresspassed. The miners raised political pressure against the Cherokee because they wanted to get to the gold. By 1830, the Federal Government forced the Native Americans west of the Mississippi River to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears as a result of the Indian Removal Act.
The United States Mint built a branch mint in Dahlonega in 1837 to coin the gold locally rather than risking the shipment of raw gold to Philadelphia. The Dahlonega Mint was a small operation, usually accounting for only a small fraction of the gold minted annually in the US. Dahlonega gold coinage is prized by numismatists (coin nerds) today.
At its height, Dahlonega supported a population of about 15,000 miners.
In 1848, news of the California Gold Rush reached Georgia, and many miners moved west in search of more gold. The assayer of the Dahlonega Mint, Dr. M. F. Stephenson, tried to persuade miners to stay in Dahlonega instead of joining the latest gold rush, saying, There's millions still in it, famously misquoted as Thar's gold in them thar hills.
In 1861 the Dahlonega Mint facility was captured by the South during the Civil War, and after the war ended the US Mint decided against its re-opening. By then, the US government had established a mint in San Francisco. Given the large amount of gold discovered in the California gold rush, the San Francisco and Philadelphia mints were capable of handling the national needs of gold mint production. Years later in December of 1878, a fire burned the original Dahlonega Mint building to the ground.
Today, just over 5,000 residents populate the town of Dahlonega.

This was once part of an old gold mine in Georgia. The mountain had several mines and mills, operations began in the 1800's and the area was used for mining up until the mid-1900's. As I explored around I saw remains from one of the old mines. It was like taking a journey back in time...

Three Sisters Vineyards - Dahlonega GA
$threesistersvineyards #georgiavineyards #georgiawines We have created the series after all of the fun we had last year touring the North Georgia Wine Region. Joan and I are not wine connoisseurs and our formula for wine is very simple - if we like it, we'll drink it. And one thing is for sure, we love the wines in North Georgia and especially Three Sisters Vineyards.
Part of what make Georgia wine so interesting is the farm environment. All the tasting rooms we've visited are in the vineyards. Many were working farms of one sort or another prior to becoming a vineyard. This casual, homey atmosphere welcomes you to the vineyard and then there's the tasting.
Three Sisters is the oldest commercial vineyard and winery in North Georgia. The wines are 100% made from grapes grown at this vineyard. Each sampled (and bought!) we very good. I (Jerry) like earthy, woody reds and Joan likes anything sweet. Three Sisters makes enough varieties to make both of us happy. The wine bar car be very social if you want it to be. Easy to strike up a conversation about the wines and travel. We even met a couple who are RV full timers and iLoveRVlife viewers.
As with many of the vineyards, Three Sisters is a popular wedding destination. I'll leave the explanation to the video. Just trust me on this one - Stunning!
Hope you get a chance to come to North Georgia and experience these wonderful vineyards and Three Sisters should be at the top of your list.
