Daitoku-ji and Zen Gardens in Kyoto, Japan
Daitoku-ji or The Temple of Great Virtue is a Buddhist temple in the Kita-ku district of Northern Kyoto. The temple belongs to the Rinzai school of Japanese Buddhism. The complex consists of two dozens of sub temples and is famous for the Zen rock gardens. In this video, you can see some of the main buildings and gardens of the Daitoku-ji temple. Unfortunately, filming and taking pictures is strictly prohibited in certain places including the Deisen-in temple. Anyway, I hope you will enjoy this walk through the Daitokuji complex.

Koto-in (高桐院) is probably the most popular temple in Daitoku-ji (大徳寺). It was established in 1601 as a family temple by the famous military leader Hosokawa Tadaoki. Hosokawa was not only a successful warrior, he was also very cultivated, intelligent and open-minded. He was therefore not particularly worried by the then illegal beliefs of his wife who was Christian. Hosokawa devoted the end of his life to studying zen Buddhism and was a distinguished disciple of renowned tea master Sen Rikyu. The interest that Hosokawa had in tea explains the presence of two tea houses on the temple's grounds, named Shoko-ken and Horai. The tomb of Hosokawa and his wife are in a corner of the temple gardens.
The temple fame comes from its maples that produce beautiful colours in autumn. The long and narrow path from the temple gates to its main buildings is a very popular photo opportunity in autumn. Interestingly, that part of the temple can be accessed without charge. Anyone interested in shooting there should arrive at the right time of the season, and at least one hour before the temple's official opening time as the front gates open earlier. As you can imagine, the long path does not know more than 30 seconds without people for the rest of the day.
After this path and a smaller gate the visitor enters the temple itself. After the entrance the main hall and renowned garden is on the left.
The main garden is a simple flat moss surface with a single lantern and several maples cropping out. The background is mostly bamboos. At the north end of the hall you will find slippers that allow you to walk in the garden (but not on the moss!). There you will find the tomb of Hosokawa and his wife, as well as a very nice tsukubai basin (蹲) which, in autumn, is covered with maple leaves.
After strolling in the garden you can go back to the entrance and explore the right side of the temple (which you may have seen during your stroll). At the end of all the corridors is the small but beautiful tea room of the temple.

Daitokuji is a functioning Rinzai Zen temple complex in northwest Kyoto.
The Daitokuji compound is a city within walls made up of 24 sub-temples, eight of which are open to the public. Of particular note are the small sub-temples Daisen-in and Koto-in for their lovely, though small, gardens. Koto-in is known for its spectacular red maples in autumn.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Zuiho-in Daitoku-ji〜
Zuiho-in (瑞峯院) is a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji, and one of the few to to open to the public year-round. The temple was founded in 1546 by a feudal lord as a family temple. As it was founded after the Onin war, many buildings in Zuiho-in are originals, including its main hall. A particularity of this temple is that its founder Otomo converted to Christianity and received the Christian name of Francisco. Shortly after Christianity was banned in Japan, and there were no teachings of the Christian faith in Zuiho-in.
The visit of Zuiho-in starts with its front garden. To reach the builds from the front gate one has to turn three times, a design that helps the visitor feeling a distance between the busy outside world and the quietness of the temple itself. Note the formal gate of the temple located at the end of the front garden. This classic feature in a zen garden only used in very, very special occasions. After entering the temple one reaches the main hall and, more importantly the main garden that lies in front of it.

Daitokuji is a large walled temple complex in northern Kyoto and the head temple of the Rinzai sect's Daitokuji school of Japanese Zen Buddhism. The complex contains nearly two dozen subtemples and offers a chance to see a wide variety of Zen gardens and to come into contact with Zen culture and architecture, the best compared to other such places in Japan.
Daitokuji's main buildings of the Sanmon Gate, Hatto Hall, Butsuden Hall and Hojo Residence are arranged on the east side of the temple grounds, which is according to the classical layout of a Zen monastery. Although they are not usually open to the public, visitors may look into the interior of the Butsuden.
Around the main buildings are nearly two dozen subtemples, many of which were additionally built in the complex by feudal lords coming from across Japan. Four of the subtemples are open to the public on a regular basis, while some of the others have temporary special openings.
