Doringbaai, Western Cape, South Africa
Doringbaai is a settlement in West Coast District Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa.
Doringbaai, previously known as Thornbay, is a small fishing village. The main economic activity is the packaging and export of crayfish. In the past, the bay at Doringbaai was used as an anchorage for the trade route; provisions were deposited here and transported to Vanrhynsdorp by camel. The lighthouse, one of the local landmarks, was built in 1963.
Whale Coast, South Africa | TRAVEL FILM
Approximately two and a half hours drive out of Cape Town, lies a region of such immense beauty that it attracts thousands of visitors a year - THE WHALE COAST! (Also known as The Cape Overberg region).
The entire coastline offers generous sightings of whales and comprises some of the most scenic and popular parts of South Africa. Including the meeting place of two oceans - the Indian and Atlantic.
This first episode features the picturesque QUOIN POINT!
A semi-hidden peninsula that lies between Danger Point and Cape Agulhas and the second most southern tip of the African continent. A beautiful empty sand beach stretches from the Buffeljags-settlement to Quoin Point. Unsurprisingly, reaching the beach entails a 4X4 vehicle over rather rough terrain. Around it are a series of little cottages, owned by families who live in nearby Elim.
Despite the beauty on shore, the ocean around Quoin Point is the burial place of numerous ships and hundreds of sailors. Between Danger Point and Cape Infanta, about 140 shipwrecks are mapped. Most of these shipwrecks are centred around Quoin Point, Arniston and Agulhas.
The history of Quoin Point and its shipwrecks is closely connected to that of Elim, the Moravian mission village on the road between Baardskeerdersbos and Bredasdorp. Over the years, residents of Elim have often provided assistance to victims of shipwrecks. After people from Elim provided assistance at the wrecking of the Jessie in 1829 at Quoin Point, Queen Victoria granted the right to use the land at Quoin Point to residents, which insured that people would be present to assist shipwreck survivors at this treacherous point. Today there is still a small light-tower surrounded by some cottages owned by the Schipper- and October-families of Elim.
Originally, Quoin Point was named Ponta de sao Brandoa by Bartolomeu Diaz when he rounded Quoin Point in 1488 on the nameday of the Irish monk St. Brendanus.
Later the name changed to Quoin Point, but the locals call it Jessie se Punt (Jessie’s Point).
Enjoy! Stay tuned for Episode 02 of PEARLY BEACH! :)

Red weekend in Agulhas 2008
Most southern tip of Africa is not the Cape of Good Hope but Cape Aghulas, a sleepy coastal town in the Overberg district. I loved this place on the border to the emptiness of the icy deserts of Antartica. We visited our friends Rudi and Anna who run a private as well as a public gallery at the time. Our friends Elvira and Massimo Cecconi were still busy completing the second house they built in Barrydale and Beate's daughter Micha came from Munich to present her new born son Joel and spend the Christmas holidays with us. The Department of Home Affairs just extended our temporary residence permit till December 2011. Great time, great African feelings in an incredible landscape of rolling waves, rocky cliffs and stranded ships. Cape Agulhas, fino del mundo.

Cape L'Agulhas - The Southern Most Tip of Africa
Check out Inspired Risk's first feature-length documentary:
L'Agulhas is the most southern coastal village and holiday resort in Africa, located within the Cape Agulhas Municipal area at the southernmost tip of the African mainland. It is situated next to the town of Struisbaai and about 30 kilometres south of the regional centre of Bredasdorp. The name Agulhas, Portuguese for needles, is said to have been given to the cape because the compass-needle was seen to point due north, that is, with no magnetic deviation. The Agulhas Bank is reputed to be the richest fishing area in the Southern Hemisphere. Some of the older residents and documents refer to the town as by its former name Cape Agulhas or Cape L'Agulhas or simply Agulhas which were the names that referred to this town before it was changed to L'Agulhas to avoid confusion when the Bredasdorp Municipality changed its name to The Cape Agulhas Municipality.
Tourist interests and activities include: A visit to the Lighthouse with a view from the tower and a walkway along the seafront to the new most southern African monument and a place where two oceans meet at the foot of Africa. A little further along the walkway is the shipwreck of Meisho Maru. Tourists also enjoy the local fyhbos plants, bird watching, hiking, swimming in the local tidal pools or a game of Jukskei on Saturday mornings. Other interests are visiting arts and craft shops, local wine sales, shops and restaurants or enjoy a meal at one of the best local fish restaurants in the area. L’Agulhas is a peaceful town and a ‘get away’ from busy city living.

Hout Bay
Hout Bay with the distinctive Mount Sentinel. A picturesque setting and one of the most popular destinations on the Cape Peninsula near Cape Town, Soth Africa. Walking down the beach - one gets to Hout Bay's centrepiece, the yacht- and fishing-harbour with the lively promenade. Behind the fishing boats: the open-air arts and crafts market with items from all over Africa. Woodcarvings are often treated with shoeshine - for an ebony-like look - a cheap and effective method. More sophisticated souvenirs - even diamond jewellery - can be purchased in the Kraal Kraft shop opposite the road. Boat rides on the bay are quite popular. As a farewell - and a welcome on return - the colourfully dressed street musicians from the Hangklip quarter play and sing their tunes.

Southern Right Whales are seasonal visitors and are welcomed to the area annually from around July to December, when they arrive to mate and calve in our relatively temperate waters (compared to their normal Antartic habitat). this is a great attraction to the area and Saxon Lodge is a fantastic base for viewing Whales in the area, either boat based or land based. CAVE TOURS
The Klipgat Caves are nestled along the rocky coastline of Walker Bay Nature Reserve on the edge of De Kelders in Gansbaai. Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is a luxurious five-star lodge that is set amongst the perpetual beauty of nature close to Gansbaai. Guided Cave Tours are offered to guests where an experienced guide can divulge the interesting history and heritage of the area.
When you arrive you can take in the incredible view over Walker Bay Nature Reserve and Die Plaat, which is seventeen kilometres of untouched beach and rolling sand dunes. Soak in this view before making your way down the steps leading toward limestone caves bearing ancient tales and fascinating secrets. The steps are not too strenuous and they are surrounded by lush fynbos.
Discover a labyrinth of caves caused by a combination of the merciless and relentless Atlantic Ocean and the elements of the limestone rock. The Grootbos guide will lead you through narrow tunnels that open up onto large cavernous areas. The largest cave has been investigated by a group of qualified archaeologists that discovered signs of Stone Age people and the Khoikhoi. Evidence of Middle Stone Age times are the first signs of early man (homosapiencs) and it is a rare and valuable discovery in South Africa. Each layer of sand represents a different era that is awash with long forgotten stories and ways lost in time. Learn about a time long before technology where life bore daily challenges that we do not face today. Ancient man had to create fire from stone, hunt to eat and face natural adversities every day.
The Khoikhoi were hunter-gatherers that were more commonly found inland. However, this particular group were obviously attracted to the Klipgat caves because of the natural shelter, the stream of fresh water close by, abundance of fish and whales, and gorgeous views. The cave openings look onto the brilliant blue ocean and it is the perfect silhouette for taking photographs.
Once you are finished discovering the home of ancient man, you can take a stroll along the pristine beach of Walker Bay or sit down for a light picnic and sundowners.
Saab JAS 39 Gripen
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen (English: Griffin) is a light single-engine multirole fighter aircraft manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab. It was designed to replace the Saab 35 Draken and 37 Viggen in the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet). The Gripen has a delta wing and canard configuration with relaxed stability design and fly-by-wire flight controls. It is powered by the Volvo RM12, and has a top speed of Mach 2. Later aircraft are modified for NATO interoperability standards and to undertake in-flight refuelling.
In 1979, the Swedish government began development studies for an aircraft capable of fighter, attack and reconnaissance missions to replace the Saab 35 Draken and 37 Viggen. A new design from Saab was selected and developed as the JAS 39, first flying in 1988. Following two crashes during flight development and subsequent alterations to the aircraft's flight control software, the Gripen entered service with the Swedish Air Force in 1997. Upgraded variants, featuring more advanced avionics and adaptations for longer mission times, began entering service in 2003.
