ZANZIBAR ISLAND STONE TOWN - TANZANIA DARAJANI MARKET
The Darajani Market (or Bazaar) is the main bazaar in Stone Town, Zanzibar island. It is also known as Estella Market (after Countess Estella, sister of Lloyd Mathews, Prime Minister of Zanzibar) and informally as Marikiti Kuu (in swahili, main market). The market is located in Darajani Road, in the surroundings of the Anglican Cathedral of Christ.
The main structure of the market was built in 1904 by Bomanjee Maneckjee, for Sultan Ali bin Hamud. It was later extended and restored.
Darajani Bazaar is mainly a food market (seafood, meat, fruits, grains, spices), but there are also shops selling a number of different goods, from consumer electronics to clothing.

Darajani Market or Central Market or simply the Main Market is a covered bazaar in the middle of Stone Town on Creek Road and a very vibrant place. It was constructed in 1904. Before this Market, the marketplace was within the Old Fort. The present Market is one of the best places to see the daily life and culture of Zanzibar from close. Here the locals can buy things of daily household use from fish to sewing machines. The long market hall has sections for sale of different things.

Zanzibar Pizza dinner in The Darajani Market (or Bazaar) STONE TOWN
Hello Zanzibar - A Day in Stone Town (Zanzibar City, Tanzania)
Zanzibar City is the capital of Zanzibar. There is a very beautiful harbor. There, the waves are often so high that they to
inject into the coffee cups. The most famous district of Zanzibar City located in the center and Stone Town is called. Attention fans of Freddie Mercury, Stone Town is his birthplace. I show you his house. (House number 139) It has already been renovated.
Your also can see the House of Wonders. It was the first house,
had that electricity. Even an elevator had been installed.
Stone Town is since 2000 a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
In the old town, the streets are very narrow. Over the heads are located venturesome lines for electricity and water. This area is also famous for its great doors. The first stone building was erected here 1698th The narrow streets are full of life. Many artists and craftsmen live here. Gradually the historic homes are renovated. Many shine again in its old glory, others do not look very good. Stone Town is a place that exudes a lot of history.

2004 ZANZIBAR STONE TOWN LOOKING FOR NEW SHOES
We walked and walked until i realised Miss G had outgrown her shoes , mission was hunting for new pair of shoes for Lil Missy
The heart of Stone Town mostly consists of a maze of narrow alleys lined by houses, shops, bazaars and mosques. Since most streets are too narrow for cars, the town is crowded with bicycles and motorbikes. The seafront has wider streets and larger, more regularly placed buildings.
Stone Town's architecture has a number of distinctive features, as a result of Arab, Persian, Indian, European, and African traditions mixing together. The name Stone Town comes from the ubiquitous use of coral stone as the main construction material; this stone gives the town a characteristic, reddish warm color.Traditional buildings have a baraza, a long stone bench along the outside walls; this is used as an elevated sidewalk if heavy rains make the streets impracticable, or otherwise as benches to sit down, rest, socialize.Another key feature of most buildings is large verandas protected by carved wooden balustrades. The most well-known feature of Zanzibari houses are the finely decorated wooden doors, with rich carvings and bas-reliefs, sometimes with big brass studs of Indian tradition. Two main types of doors can be distinguished: those of Indian style have rounded tops, while those in the Omani Arab style are rectangular. Carvings are often Islamic in content (for example, many consist of verses of the Qur'an), but other symbolism is occasionally used, e.g., Indian lotus flowers as emblems of prosperity.
Zanzibar- Streets and Bazaars
Stone Town Zanzibar has interesting streets and bazaars. The streets are narrow and winding. They present a unique culture. The old style houses with carved doors and windows gave a delicious touch to human senses. There are small shops in these streets where souvenirs, home made articles and handicrafts are sold at reasonable prices. There are many religious places in these streets which represent different religions. It is a treat to roam about in these streets aimlessly without any target. At every turn you will see a new thing which will amuse you a lot.At places you will see old men playing card or board games and other people of the vicinity clustering around them.
