???????? Death Railway, Kanchanaburi
Constructed during World War II, the Thailand to Burma railway is also known as the Death Railway. It is said that one man died for every sleeper that was laid on the track. The line was repaired and restored after the war and still runs passenger services as far as Nam Tok to the north of Kanchanaburi with the most famous section of the line being the Bridge over the River Kwai.

Death Railway, Kanchanaburi, Thailand
Ride the train along the Death Railway from Namtok to Kanchanaburi Station over the Bridge on the River Kwai. Taken on 9th February, 2011. The scenery is so wonderful, it is easy to forget the horror and suffering endured by the POW's and enforced Asian labourers that built it, but the beauty of the surroundings is their legacy.
JC’s Road Trip - Living as a RIPper in a Smaller City – Kanchanaburi, Thailand Part 1
Check out our exclusive member site: Well for all the fans that love the North of Thailand I want to show you something! Let’s head off to see what Kanchanaburi has for a RIPper wanting a little more peace and quiet than what a city like Chiang Mai offers but wants to be closer to Central Thailand. Chiang Mai with its growth and being a major tourist destination is quickly losing some of its charm.
So what are some more options? What does it cost and what is it like to live in Kanchanaburi? Can living only a little more than two hours from Bangkok really give us the quality of life we want? Can a category 1 RIPper (Retiree In Paradise) live well in Kanchanaburi? Well I am off to find out. We will see what the upsides and downsides are to living in a smaller Thai town in the Central area of Thailand are. Here is a little intro about Kanchanaburi and its history and some things that have put Kanchanaburi on my radar screen as a great place to retire to. So join with me as we dig in and explore what Kanchanaburi has to offer!
Kanchanaburi is actually pronounced gaan jà ná bù rii and is located where the rivers Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai meet. For most visitors the main sight of interest is the Bridge over the River Kwai which is pronounced khwaae as in air, which started the World War II Death Railway to Burma (now Myanmar).
There is an increasing amount of people taking advantage of the chilled-out riverside vibe for those that want to be close Bangkok but without the hectic pace. More foreigners are discovering why Thais know it as one of the most beautiful provinces in the country with its easily accessible waterfalls and national parks.
Please become a friend or subscribe to this channel and you if can, link back to my website I’d appreciate it. For more videos, books on retiring abroad and a Retirement Budget Calculator go check out

Kanchanaburi Death Railway | What to expect | Thailand Vlogs
Welcome to our VIRGYLVENTURES!
Join us as we travel to Kanchanaburi, Thailand and experienced the Death Railway train ride.
Kanchanaburi is 3-4 hours away from Bangkok and is one of largest cities of the country. It is famously known to locals and tourists alike because of the Bridge on the River Kwai (there is actually a war film about this) where prisoners of wars and asians labourers spent months to finish that has took too many lives during the construction.
I do hope that this video gives you information on what you can expect and some other things to do while in Kanchanaburi.
Any comments and suggestions are welcome! Just type it in the comment box below! Thank you!

BANGKOK TRAIN TO KANCHANABURI THAILAND THONBURI STATION
Thonburi Railways Station in Bangkok, also known as Bangkok Noi
To Kanchanaburi by train only 100 Thai Baht. The train leaves Bangkok twice a day. 7.55am & 1.55pm Platform one. The journey takes around 2 hours 30 mins. It is a 3rd class journey with wooden seats, no air con, & open windows. Be sure to take on board some water as it gets hot. Refreshments are brought on board half way through the train ride. All in all a great little experience. I would definitely do it again.
I hope you enjoyed the movie. if so, please share with all your friends, & family.
if you would like to give a little something back for all my hard work, and information?
There is now a way to help out towards costs of videos.
As you probably appreciate, they take a lot of my time and effort.

THAILAND KANCHANABURI. THE BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER KWAI #THAILAND
Geoff Carter takes you over the Bridge of the River Kwai
in Kanchanaburi Thailand. During WW II, Japan constructed the meter-gauge railway line from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Burma. The line passing through the scenic Three Pagodas Pass runs for 250 miles. This is now known as the Death Railway.
The railway line was meant to transport cargo daily to India, to back up their planned attack on India. The construction was done using POWs and Asian slave laborers in unfavorable conditions. The work started in October 1942 was completed in a year. Due to the difficult terrain, thousands of laborers lost their lives. It is believed that one life was lost for each sleeper laid in the track.
At the nearby Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, around 7,000 POWs, who sacrificed their lives in the railway construction, are buried. Another 2,000 are laid to rest at the Chungkai Cemetery.
Allied Forces bombed the iron bridge in 1944. Three sections of Bridge River Kwai were destroyed. The present bridge has two of its central spans rebuilt. The original parts of the bridge are now displayed in the War Museum.
The Bridge River Kwai became famous all over the world, when it was featured in movies and books. The cliff-hugging tracks and the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and valleys are well captured in the David Lean movie.
Bridge River Kwai is a tourist destination now. The track is developed into a walkway with side platforms. This allows crossing the railway bridge on foot. These platforms are useful as viewpoints and for avoiding trains. A small tourist train runs back and forth across the bridge.
Every year, River Kwai Bridge Festival is organized to mark the Allied bombing on November 28, 1944. Spectacular light and sound show is the highlight of the festival.
Hope you enjoyed this short movie.

This video is about our weekend to Kanchanaburi and the Erawan Waterfall in Thailand. This is a great weekend trip to get out of the busy Big Mango which is Bangkok City.
With a bit of a late Friday night and a sleep in on Saturday, we took train number 259, 13:55 departure train leaving from Bangkok Thonburi station to Kanchanaburi Railway Station. It was only THB100 per person! The train was comfortable and not too busy. There is no air-con though so expect to sweat a little. We played Uno most of the train ride.
We arrived in Kanchanaburi around 5pm, took a motorbike taxi (we had backpack so was easy and we only paid THB20 each) to The River Kwai Hotel where we stayed for the night. It is not the most luxurious hotel but it was well prices and had a pool, a great buffet breakfast and was walking distance to the night market, night clubs and cool bars. Totally worth it. We booked it through Agoda (online) about 30min before arriving in Kanchanaburi.
The next morning we decided to go to the Erawan Waterfall and got a motorbike taxi to the Kanchanaburi Bus station and got on the bus clearly marked Erawan (really big letters on the front screen of the blue bus) We paid the bus driver THB50 each for a one way ticket and at 8am off we went on our 2-3 hour journey to Erawan National Park to see the Erawan Waterfall. The bus is small with little leg room and can get very full but for only THB50... who cares right?
The bus drops you off pretty much close to the falls and you need to pay a TH300 Park Entry Fee so have your cash ready. It is about a 2km walk from where the bus drops you to the waterfall so pack light. We also did the whole walk in flip flops... First section is easy, middle section is all uphill and the last section is like a proper hiking trail with no paved walkway. Waterfall level 1-4 is easier to get to and waterfall levels 5,6 & 7 is a bit more tricky. It is all worth it so keep going! We hiked all the way to Level 7 and then walked back and swam in the ones we liked and where there weren't too many people. (It got really packed after 12pm so try to go early) There are fish in the water that nibble on your toes, nothing to worry about just super ticklish. We packed some snacks which was a great idea and they sell the best Iced Cocoa close to Level 1 of the waterfall.
From Erawan National Park we asked the security to organize us a taxi to Nam Tok Railway station. We paid THB1000 for the private taxi. It was a lot but was the only way to get to go do the death railway as there were not any public transport heading that way. It was about a 1 hour drive. We had some lunch on arrival and then got the 15:30 train back to Kanchanaburi. The Death railway and the Bridge over the River Kwai was just a small section of the route and was cool to experience because of its history but the views and landscapes during our train ride were breathtaking. It must be one of the most beautiful train rides I have been on. Really worth doing.
We arrived in Kanchanaburi Railway Station and took a taxi (back of a pick up truck for only THB20) to the Bus station. We then took a mini bus leaving at 18:30 back to Bangkok. We arrived in Bangkok around 9pm.
I know there are many way to do this trip to Kanchanaburi but this is what worked best for us and the time we had. Perhaps it may help you on your adventure there!
