Delamere Forest Park is a large wood near the town of Frodsham in Cheshire, England. The woodland, which is managed by the Forestry Commission, covers an area of 972 hectares (2,400 acres) making it the largest area of woodland in the county. It contains a mixture of deciduous and evergreen trees.
Delamere, which means forest of the lakes, is all that remains of the great Forests of Mara and Mondrem which covered over 60 square miles (160 km2) of this part of Cheshire. Established in the late 11th century, they were the hunting forests of the Norman Earls of Chester. Order was maintained under forest law. However this governance limited the agricultural potential of the area for centuries. It was not until ownership passed to The Crown in 1812 that the ancient ordnances were abolished. In 1924 the woodland came under the control of the Forestry Commission.
The area also includes Old Pale hill, the high point of the northern mass of the Mid Cheshire Ridge, and Blakemere Moss, a lake around 1 km in length. Black Lake, a rare example of quaking bog or schwingmoor, has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and forms part of an international Ramsar site; Linmer Moss has also been designated an SSSI for its fenland habitat. The white-faced darter, a species of dragonfly rare in the UK, and marsh fern and white sedge, wetland plants that are rare in Cheshire, are found here.
A popular recreational area, Delamere Forest is used by walkers, cyclists, mountain bikers and horse riders. The forest is also a venue for outdoor concerts.

Hiking around Delamere Forest, Cheshire, UK - a training walk on the sandstone trail with my baby
In this vlog we will be hiking with a baby boy around Delamere Forest, Cheshire, UK from Gresty's Waste around Blakemere. Walking on part of the sandstone trail.
We parked at Gresty's waste car park as it is free and walked into Delamere Forest, Cheshire. It put a couple of extra miles on the walk but on this occasion that was just an added bonus as that was what I wanted.
We walked up past Old Pale Hill and down into Delamere Forest.
Then from the visitors centre out and around Blakemere. Blakemere is the largest body of water in the area at 35Ha and was recovered in 1997 as it had become overgrown. It is a superb habitat and a major draw for visitors in Delamere forest.
Hiking with a baby boy is more than manageable here. A lot of people use push chairs but I prefer to have Tom, my baby boy in a back pack style baby carrier. The Osprey Poco is the one we have and we have covered miles in it. It is no more difficult than backpacking. In Delamere forest there are plenty of benches and picnic tables which make changing babies a breeze. There is no reason your baby boy can't train with you.
Delamere is one of the gems of Cheshire and must rank right up there in the UK ratings. The countryside is as you would expect to find in northern Cheshire And is very picturesque.
The sandstone trail cuts through delamere and is easily followed using the sandstone trail way markers.
Delamere: Forest of Bogs
In the UK we have lost 95% of our lowland beat bogs. Whilst not typically thought of as an attractive habitat, they are a vital carbon store and are home to many plants, insects and animals, some of which are only found in these areas.
Delamere Forest in Cheshire features a wealth of mosses and bogs - thanks to Forestry England, in partnership with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, who have undertaken to restore these important ecosystems to their former glory.

Gruffalo Spotters at Delamere Forest
Gruffalo Spotters is the latest incarnation of the much loved Gruffalo Trails in 26 forests across the UK (check the link below to find your nearest one!) and this time features a fantastic app to bring the characters to life.
The closest forest to us with a Gruffalo Spotters Trail is Delamere where we've completed the two previous Gruffalo Trails (I've popped links into these write ups below) so it was only right that we went there this weekend to try out the new Gruffalo Spotters app!

Delamere Forest & World Crime Scenes.. A Public Enemy No1 - Litter
We all come across litter when out in the great outdoors – whether it be a Forest, your street or a Pacific Coral Reef Atoll.
These days, I will tend to pick up the odd bottle or can, then at least next time I pass by I don’t have to see this ‘blot’ on the landscape and nor do others. Sometimes however, there is a bin bag full to contend with.
In this film, I return to a remote spot in the forest. More specifically, Delamere Forest. The leftover from a thug's night out in the forest (replace that word thug with one of your choice!) leaving a trail of destruction and litter.
So what goes on in the minds of these delinquent types then? and what is the answer, or even, what is the question? I don’t know.
But what I do know is it is a global problem. Pollution I mean. It is in the heart of man and man is such a polluter without care sometimes. As can be seen here the effects of world litter as it accumulates in the Atoll basin, a Coral Reef paradise a couple of thousand kilometres from the nearest continent. But what lurks beneath and floating on top is plastic trash from the UK, China, India and the world. Here lie tens of thousands of dead baby albatross chicks, mistakenly fed floating plastic bite size trash. A true tragedy and epitome of man’s nature and negligence of our blue planet.
9 out of 10 seabirds have plastic in them. By 2050 it will be 10/10.
I don’t know what the solution is but will take a long time. It has to start in the home, the family and at school. A mindset shift. But many parents are passing this non-respect for the environment to kids. All in all, it is a shifting of responsibility to others, including the suffocating planet to deal with.
I sometimes think, if everyone picked up one piece of litter per day, then with 8 billion of us, there would be no litter soon!
