Places to see in ( Winsford - UK )
Winsford is a town and civil parish within the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. It lies on the River Weaver south of Northwich and west of Middlewich, and grew around the salt mining industry after the river was canalised in the 18th century, allowing freight to be conveyed northwards to the Port of Runcorn on the River Mersey.
Winsford is split into three neighbourhoods: Over on the western side of the River Weaver, Wharton on the eastern side, and Swanlow and Dene, as shown on the official map of Winsford in the Town Council Office in Wyvern House. Many Winsfordians consider the town to be the heart of Cheshire however other towns in Cheshire also claim this title
From the 1830s, salt became important to Winsford, partly because the salt mines under Northwich had begun to collapse and another source of salt near the River Weaver was needed. A new source was discovered in Winsford, leading to the development of a salt industry along the course of the River Weaver, where many factories were established. As a result, a new town developed within 1 mi (2 km) of the old Borough of Over which had been focused on Delamere Street.
The United Kingdom's largest rock salt (halite) mine is at Winsford. It is one of only three places where rock salt is commercially mined in the United Kingdom, the others being at Boulby Mine, North Yorkshire, and Kilroot, near Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland.
Rock salt was laid down in this part of North West England 220 million years ago, during the Triassic geological period. Seawater moved inland from an open sea, creating a chain of shallow salt marshes across what is today the Cheshire basin. As the marshes evaporated, deep deposits of rock salt were formed.
One of the most popular local stories is that St Chad's Church was built in Over Square, but the devil was so angry at the people's use of it that he decided to fly off with it. The monks at Vale Royal Abbey were said to have seen him and rung the abbey bells so that it was dropped at its current location. The Winsford Flashes are the town's most notable geographical feature. Parts of the Knights Grange pub, Grange Lane, which was once a farmhouse and belonged to Vale Royal Abbey, were built in the 17th century.
Winsford railway station, on the Liverpool to Birmingham main line, is one mile (1.5 km) east of the centre of the town, in Wharton. The town at one time had two other railway stations: Winsford and Over, on a branch from the Mid-Cheshire Line near Cuddington, and Over and Wharton, on a branch from the Liverpool to Birmingham line.

10 Of The Best British Farm Attractions
Stockley Farm Park, Cheshire.
This organic dairy and arable farm prides itself on a “hands-on” approach: visitors are encouraged to feed and groom the animals and watch planting and milking parlour demonstrations.
Odds Farm Park, Buckinghamshire.
Odds Farm Park was named attraction of the year at the 2017 National Farm Attractions Network awards.
Good Day Out, Powys.
Sheep-trekking, sheepdog herding and “pig-nics” are just a few of the unusual and educational experiences offered by Good Day Out, which raises money for local causes by offering interactive farm visits in the Brecon Beacons.
Hall Hill Farm, County Durham.
Spring is one of the busiest times of year on sheep farms. On 7 April, Hall Hill Farm will be hosting a Lambing Live Open Day, with extended opening hours (10.30am-9pm) so that visitors can see births as they happen and visit new-born lambs in the maternity barn.
Mudchute Farm, London.
Set in 32 acres on the Isle of Dogs, this inner-city farm brings a little slice of rural life to the East End. As well as the working farm, there’s a petting zoo, duck pond and equestrian centre, with an all-weather floodlit riding arena and show jumps.
Blackstone Clydesdales, Ayrshire.
This family farm offers the opportunity to get up close to working Clydesdale horses and other farm animals on specially tailored “experiences”.
Bocketts Farm Park, Surrey.
Unlike some “farm attractions” which are really just theme parks with animals, Bocketts is still very much a working sheep farm. Around 500 lambs are expected to arrive over the next month or two and lucky visitors might even get to watch one being born.
The Big Sheep, Devon.
No list of farm attractions is complete without the Big Sheep, which has transformed itself from humble livestock farm to one of Devon’s top family attractions.
Baylham House, Suffolk.
This small livestock farm specialises in breeds once common on British farms, but now under threat. Children can get really close to the animals, with opportunities to groom goats and pigs, stroke rabbits, feed chickens and hunt for new-laid eggs.
Acton Scott, Shropshire.
If Acton Scott looks familiar, it’s because it was the setting of the BBC2 show Victorian Farm.

This Is The Lake District
Having spent years photographing the Lake District for our holiday cottage company we thought it was time to ramp things up and create Time Lapse and video movies.
Shot by Jack Serginson and Ollie Gough with a bit of help from myself I think they have produced something quite special, highlighting Cumbria's Lake District and showing why this stunning area is the perfect holiday destination. Look out for re-edits and new films. Big thanks to Cam, Ram and Set from Reforest Records for running out a great sound track at short notice. Oh and by the way, in their urgency to get the film up before disappearing to Norway for their next great time lapse adventure, they made a few spelling typos - Tut Tut boys, I guess I should have checked.
If you want to visit the Lake District then do see our Visit England inspected quality Lake District Cottages see our website at - you won't be disappointed.
If you wish to use any part of the movie please contact John Serginson at The Lakeland Cottage Company Tel 015395 38180
