A Greenland Experience 2014
Originally I'd planned a trip to Ammassalik Island, East Greenland to do an 80km or so trail around the south west of the island along with a little more exploring to over 2 weeks on the island. However a few months before the trip I badly injured my back which was slow to recover, I lost fitness and so the originally planned trip was't an option.
So this is a video of footage and pictures taken around the hills and waters near Tasiilaq, the main settlement of the area which I explored during my stay.
The weather was dry and scorching hot (up to 29c) which I didn't expect, the midgies, mozzies and black fly were a pain, but it was a fantastic trip to a wonderful part of the world.
I hope you enjoy this glimpse of Greenland an check out my blog moder-dye.blogspot.co.uk for more information about my trip.
Ocean Nova East Greenland Cruise: Brilliant and Magnificent Ice
Go with no expectations of what to see on a Fall East Greenland cruise. Birds have migrated south. No flowers, no whales, no Northern Lights this particular trip and chances of seeing a Polar Bear are slim to none.
But you do have the most stunning ice in the world. Intensely blue. Huge, mountainous bergs and snow covered mountains.

A Quick Tour of UNESCO Illulissat Above the Arctic Circle in W Greenland
Illicit is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sermeq Kuljalleq glacier (also known as Jakobshavn), one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world. Scientists think the berg that sank the Titanic came from this glacier.
The Sea Explorer visit here had two parts; A zodiac cruise in the morning; and walk around town and to the boardwalk leading to a overlook of the glacier. Breaking bergs are often so large (1km/.6 miles HIGH) that they are too tall to move down the fjord and stick to the bottom of shallower areas for years. Mega impressive...

Ocean Nova East Greenland Cruise Day 1: Musk Ox in Eskimobugt Bay
You wouldn't think spotting an animal that looks like a cross between a buffalo or yak is a big deal but it is. The small population of people in East Greenland live a subsistence life by hunting and fishing. What they kill is what they eat.
Ergo, Musk Ox are no dummies. They stay high up in the mountains.

Ocean Nova East Greenland Cruise Day 1: Frederiksdal Tundra Walk
Although the Arctic tundra is squishy underfoot, our muck boots give a surprising amount of support. And the autumn coloration of itsy bitsy trees are stunning.

Experience the inland ice cap of Greenland
Nothing is as astonishing as the Greenlandic inland ice cap. Crystal clear, vast and almost never ending. The white giants will almost certainly leave you speechless: Miles and miles of white stretches out across the land and leaves most spectators mesmerized. Do not miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime to see this phenomena.
Air Greenland
Air Greenland A/S is the flag carrier airline of Greenland, a subsidiary of the SAS Group, owned by the SAS Group, The Greenlandic Government and The Danish Government. It operates a fleet of 32 aircraft, including 1 airliner used for transatlantic and charter flights, 9 fixed-wing aircraft primarily serving the domestic network, and 22 helicopters feeding passengers from the smaller communities into the domestic airport network. Flights to heliports in the remote settlements are operated on contract with the government of Greenland.
Founded in 1960 as Grønlandsfly, the airline started its first services with Catalina water planes and within the decade expanded to include DHC-3 Otters as well as Sikorsky S-61 helicopters, some of which remain in active service. The majority of operations were based on helicopters until the newly established Greenland Home Rule began investing in a network of short takeoff and landing airfields. These were very expensive to construct and Greenland's airport fees are still among the highest in the world; they also required a new fleet: DHC-7 turboprops uniquely suited to the harsh terrain and weather conditions in Greenland. The reliability of connections improved as the domestic airport network expanded in the 1990s: increasing use of the Dash 7s made the airline less restricted by inclement weather. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Air Greenland acquired a Boeing 757 and an Airbus A330, allowing it to open connections to Copenhagen, until then operated by SAS which also competed mid to late 2000s. In the 21st century, it competes with Air Iceland for international connections and small charter services domestically.

Ocean Nova East Greenland: First Cruise Ship to the Head of the Longest Fjord in the World
The Ocean Nova captain has tried on 4 previous occasions to navigate through ice chocked waters to the face of Daugaard-Jensen Glacier at the head of Scoresby Sund Fjord, the longest fjord in the world.
Success today and what a sight. The Immense tidewater glacier covers an estimated 4% of the Greenland ice sheet and most of the ice bergs in East Greenland begin their journey here.
