Food Tour in Karakol - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
From the Seven Bulls, we continue our journey directly to Karakol.
Here, we meet Amann from Destination Karakol in the Visitor Center. He will introduce us to the food of different nationalities and the best local food spots in town. First stop is at the bazaar in Karakol, where you find people of the Dungan, Kyrgyz and Uyghur nationality. The Dungans came from China in the 18th and 19th centuries, originally they were Hui Chinese. We go to a Dungan family to try Ashlyan-Fu, their national dish. It is made from thick rice noodles and thinner wheat noodles, mixed with a vinegar chili sauce. Sometimes it is spicy, so it is good to eat it together with piroshky, the fried bread stuffed with potatoes.
Our second stop is Cafe Zarina, run by Uyghur business. The Uyghurs were originally from China and they are one of the oldest nationality in this area, even older than the Kyrgyz. The Uighurs are the third largest population after Kyrgyz and Russians.
We enjoy Laghman, the national food of the Uyghur people. Laghman is made of long noodles, that means long life. The noodles come with a special sauce, made of vegetables Sometimes it is spicy. You find different varieties of Laghman, where only the noodles are the same, sometimes boiled, sometimes fried. But the sauce and the vegetables can vary. We try the fried version, the Boso Laghman.
The third stop is Kafe Kaynar. Here we enjoy Tatar Azuu. In the Tatar language it means food, in the Persian language, it means slices of meat. In this version, it is made of french fries with marinated, fried slices of meat, salted cucumbers, and onions. Originally it was made without potatoes because the potatoes came to this region 200 years ago. It is a Tatar national dish. Aman is Tatar and Tatar Azuu is his favorite dish.
During the meal, he tells us more about the history of the Tartars. The Tatars are actually Bulgars whose roots go back to Attila's Huns. When Attila died, his empire broke down into three parts. One part came to Central Asia, one to central Russian territory. The third part remained in Eastern Europe, today's Hungary, Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula.
During the reign of Genghis Khan, one of the Chinese tribes near the Chinese wall was named Tatar. But Genghis Khan killed the whole tribe.

Visiting Karakol as day trip in Kyrgyzstan
After spending several days focused on the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan we decided to take a day trip to Karakol (Каракол) for a change of pace. Our trip focused on visiting some museums, mosques, cathedrals, markets and having a traditional Kyrgyz lunch inside of a yurt. We had ambitious plans of hiking, visiting a waterfall and few other things but we ran out of time. If you're going to visit Karakol learn from our mistake and spend a few more days to really enjoy the outdoor adventure activities.

Visiting Karakol as day trip in Kyrgyzstan Travel Video Transcript:
Good morning from Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан). It is time for a day trip because we've been spending a lot of time at the World Nomad Games and it is time to get out and get to know the country a little bit. So we're taking a day trip to Karakol (Каракол). We're going to be doing some hiking, visiting waterfalls. Yeah, it is going to be really cool. I mean we've seen quite a bit of the country but we haven't been to that area yet so we're really excited about it. Let's go.
Okay, so we have been driving for about two hours and we've almost made it to Karakol (Каракол). Right now we're in the outskirts and we're stopping at the Nikolay Mikhailovich Przhevalsky museum and basically this was a guy who wanted to be a traveler. So I can relate to him. Um, he was from Russia but at the time Russian didn't have the permission to just you know go off and wander around on their own. So this guy decided to join the military and he proposed to be the first person to explore Central Asia and reach Tibet and his proposal was approved so he was funded by Russia and today there is a museum dedicated to his work.
After a short visit to the museum, we then continued on our drive towards Karakol (Каракол), where our first stop was the Dungan Mosque.
So in order to visit the Mosque you don't just wear a scarf. You need a full cloak. This will be interesting. Alright. Let's put this on. Fancy. It is like velvet.
The mosque gets its name from the Dungan people who are Muslim, but of Chinese origin. The building is quite unique because you can see the two cultures colliding; it contains elements of a traditional mosque, but at first glance it looks more like a Buddhist temple.
So now we're visiting an Orthodox Church and that was really close to the mosque.
We then went to the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which is in the centre of Karakol (Каракол). Just remember, girls need to wear a head covering and boys must take off their hats in order to go inside.
From there we continued to the Karakol Market in search of food. If there’s one dish the town is known for it’s Ashlyan Fu, a cold noodle soup with spices and jellies. There’s a whole alley in the market that specializes in this dish; so be sure to try it.
Alright so we've had a pretty busy morning of sightseeing. Now it is time for food. Yeah, we've worked up a pretty big appetite and the coolest thing is we're going to go eat inside of yurt. A yurt.
For lunch we had Dumlyama: a dish with potatoes, cabbage, onions, peppers, and meat. We also had boorsok: which are little pieces of fried dough that go really nice with jam.
So we've stopped off at this kind of cool scenic area that is called Jeti-Ögüz and nearby there is apparently some fantastic hiking. Yeah, and the name translates to seven bulls so I don't know do you see any bulls over there? You know I see in the rock formations. I think I see more than seven things.
We had really been looking forward to hiking along here, but unfortunately, this is the part of the tour where we ran out of time. This also means we didn’t get to see the waterfalls we had heard about, so if you do decide to visit Karakol (قاراقول), don’t do it as a quick day trip like we did!
Yeah, I think it is the kind of place where you want to give it a few days so you can see the surrounding areas and also that town is really known for hiking so if you're in to outdoorsy stuff go there and explore it properly.
Yeah, maybe spend like two or three days in Karakol (Каракол) see the surroundings, hike, trek and yeah really explore it.

Kyrgyzstan travel experience
Probably not on your travel list, but it should be! Wonderful nature, warm and friendly people (mostly), not crowded by tourists and a lot, lot to see, try and enjoy. We visited the capital - Bishkek, Song Kul lake, Karakol, Altyn Arashan etc. It was really an adventure! Not for everyone! Don't expect public transport outside the city.

Things to do in Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Hey guys we're in Kyrgyzstan. Yeah, new country for both of us so that is pretty exciting. First time in Central Asia so we are stoked to be here. Yeah and over the next few days we are going to be horse-trekking in Song Köl so we're going to take you along but before we get there we're making a little stop. First up Burana Tower right here. So we're going to climb to the top. Are you ready? Yes.
Greetings from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan! Hello from Central Asia. It is our first time here and we are going to be spending a few days here in the capital. So we're going to take you on a little tour and show you fifteen things to do around Bishkek (Бишкек). It should be fun.
And that’s a wrap for our trip to Bishkek (Бишкек). As you can probably tell from this video, this city is the kind of place that you experience as opposed to ticking off attractions, so it ended up being a fairly relaxing trip after a few busy weeks of travel around Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан - Киргизия). As always, if you have any suggestions of things to do in Bishkek, feel free to share your tips with fellow travellers in the comments section below. See you next time!
Hey guys we're at the World Nomad Games (Дүйнөлүк көчмөндөр оюндары) in Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан) and this is basically like the Olympics for Nomadic Games and Culture.
So we're going to show you around. We're going to be hear for several days but first the Opening Night Ceremony.
The following morning we went up to the jailoo, also known as the pasture, where they had set up a folk village so visitors could wander around and learn about Kyrgyz culture. After catching the opening dance, we set out to visit the various camps, each showcasing a different region.
So it is lunchtime here in Bishkek (Бишкек), Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) and today we are going to be having a feast. We are going to be sampling all of the traditional dishes that we've been eating over the last three weeks because that is how long we've been traveling in the country. So we're ordering a big spread. This is probably enough food for like five or six people but Sam and I are going to try and eat it all and just showcase what Central Asian cuisine is all about. So we hope you enjoy.
Well good morning. It is Saturday here in Bishkek (Бишкéк) and it is our last day in the city so we figured why not get out of the city get close to nature.

Lake Issyk Kul | Kyrgyzstan | second largest alpine lake in the world, Tian Shan Mountains
Issyk Kul Lake ssyk Kul (Kyrgyz: Ысык көл Ysyk Köl, Russian: Иссык-Куль) is a lake in Kyrgyzstan. The name refers both to the lake and the oblast (region) containing the lake. The region is centered around the massive Issyk Kul lake, which is the second largest alpine lake in the world. It is completely ringed by the massive snow-capped Tian Shan mountains that lie between 3000 and 4000 meters.
The Issyk Kul lake reaches to 663 meters deep in the center. The east end of the lake was also once used as a torpedo testing site by the Soviet Navy, making the region off limits to foreigners for a period of time.
Karakol is the largest city and the capital of Issyk-Kul oblast.
Balykchy is a small, dying industrial center on the western shore that you will encounter as you enter the pass from the Chui Valley
Cholpon Ata is the central city for tourism. Most of the resorts are within 50 km of Cholpon Ata.
There are plenty of smaller villages at lake shore, with cheaper accomodation and less tourists. One of the most accessible of these for westerners, owing to its small size, closeness to Bishkek and the fact that it had a CBT, is Tamchy. However getting off at any town along the lake where you see signs (often spray-painted) saying Комнаты, rooms, is likely to be rewarding and a way to get off the beaten track - these signs mean there are locals renting out rooms in their houses/ turning them into guest houses for the summer.
Other destinations[edit]
Jeti-Oguz
Understand[edit]
Issyk Kul is a slightly saline deep water body. Years of over-fishing have decimated its fisheries and many of the smoked fish sold in the surronding cities come from other alpine lakes. Due to a lack of reasonable control on tourism, many sub-standard and unfinished low quality tourism resorts ring the lake's north shore. Nevertheless, there still remain numerous places to appreciate the true beauty of Issyk Kul.
A mountain pass road being constructed between Issyk Kul and Almaty, Kazakhstan is set to increase the number of tourists in the coming years and without government controls on development, exposing the lake to more tourists will only deplete its natural beauty.
Talk[edit]
Russian and Kyrgyz are the primary languages. Some hospitality staff may speak English, but it is much more helpful to know basic Russian.
Get in[edit]
By bus[edit]
The simplest way to reach Issyk Kul is by minibus from Bishkek western bus station (Западный автовокзал Zapadniy avtovokzal). There are minibuses that goes over northern or southern shore, you can arrange with driver to stop at your desired village. The price is about 250 som to Cholpon Ata or 300 som to Karakol.
By taxi[edit]
You can arrange a van or taxi from Almaty or Bishkek. A hired driver one-way from Bishkek will cost up to $100. Leave from the western bus station (Западный автовокзал Zapadniy avtovokzal) to get to Issyk Kul. A seat in a 4-person shared car to Cholpon Ata will cost about 500–1000 som. Beware that prices may differ largely between different drivers and be prepared to bargain. You may wish to team up with other travelers (or locals) and negotiate a price together, locals often pleased to ensure that you pay the local fare. Prices may be higher on weekends or peak season.
By train[edit]
There is also a scenic train ride from Bishkek to Balykchy. The train is slower than bus or car, and there is only one train to Balykchy departing early morning and returning back at afternoon. But the train ride boasts amazing views of the mountain pass. And the tickets are very cheap, for 70 som. Beware that the train cabin will reach high temperatures in summer. Please note that the train only starts running in June or July.
Get around[edit]
All of the larger cities have bus and taxi stations where you can negotiate rides. If you are in a smaller city, you can just ask around for a car and driver and receive a reasonable rate.
See[edit][add listing]
Itineraries[edit]
The locally published Spektator magazine has an online guide to circumnavigating Issyk Kul.
Do[edit][add listing]
There are many routes for hiking into the mountains surrounding the lake. Issyk Kul is also ringed by hundreds of kilometers of beaches popular for swimming and sunning.

Globe Trekker Series 2 - Central Asia Trailer
Interested in more information? Follow this link to find out everything you need to know!
The former Soviet Republics of Uzbekistan & Kyrgyzstan are in the heart of Central Asia. The area is a vast inaccessible wilderness, surrounded by harsh deserts and high mountains. It was once the site of the ancient caravan routes and its towns were oases on the Great Silk Road of the East.
Traveller Ian Wright’s journey begins in the smallest of these oasis towns, Khiva.
Ian drives to Bukhara and swims in the sacred pool in the centre of town called Lyab-i-Haus. He visits a holy Imam at the tomb of Sheikh Bakhautdin just outside Bukhara and joins some old men discussing Islamic and Soviet history.
Tashkent is Ian’s next destination, arriving in time for the Independence Day celebrations. From Tashkent he flies to Bishkek, the capital of the republic of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan is a mountain paradise surrounded by deserts and populated mostly by nomads who were never quite tamed by the Soviet regime.
Ian makes his way into the Tian Shan Mountains, where he meets an eagle trainer and watches his eagle hunt a badger. He climbs to a higher plateau where some local villagers have gathered to celebrate the festival for ‘Manas’, a mythical folk hero.
Karakol serves as a base for horse trekking, climbing and skiing expeditions to the Tian Shan mountain range. Impossibly remote, they are seldom visited, with jagged peaks stretching to 7000 metres. From Karakol, Ian hitches a ride in an old Red Army helicopter and goes heliskiing with them.
Ian travels to the remote and stunning Arshane Valley in a bumpy wagon. He goes on a horse trek and meets nomadic shepherds who live in an oval-shaped tent called a ‘yurt’. On special occasion they prepare a feast called a beshparmak, where they kill and cook a sheep. They have so few Western visitors that they prepare a feast especially for Ian. Ian has to plait the intestines and cook the sheep’s head in the fire. He then shares a meal with the nomads and has to eat the sheep’s eye, which is offered only to the honoured guest and to refuse is an insult.
Osh Fest, Joining the Caravan - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
The Osh Fest was held for the first time in 2017. This tourist festival is a great opportunity to create a new incentive for the tourism in Kyrgyzstan. The festival has been hosted by USAID Business Growth Initiative (BGI) in cooperation with Destination Osh.
The organizers have planned a symbolic Silk Road Caravan. This caravan leads the approx. 2.5 km from Karl Marx High School to Toktogul Park at the city administration. Besides magnificent robes and costumes, typical objects of nomadic life, such as yurts, children's crèche, and housewares are transported with horses, donkeys, camels, and yaks.
In the Toktogul park, one serves food and shows typical craft products. The cultural events with singing and dancing occupy a large space.
At the end of the Osh Fest, one will perform a flash mob with Kyrgyz and Uzbek dance.
A driver and Muslima, our nice guide during the festival, pick us up at the hotel and drive us to the meeting point.
When we arrive, a lot of animals are already gathered. Some make a rather nervous impression, because of many people. Especially the camels seem to be restless. We observe the people who are busy fastening all objects on the animals for transport. Some also test the animals, how docile they are with the rider.
Again others pose in their grand dresses for the cameras. As we learn later, most actors are artists of the National Theater. However, some dignitaries seem to be there too.
After the preparations drag on, women's groups begin to entertain the audience with songs. Later, some of them start dancing and give a little insight into the culture of the country
Here we also meet Stephen Lioy, a travel photographer, whom we have met in Berlin, and who is also active for USAID here.
Disclosure: Our trip was organized in cooperation with Discover Kyrgyzstan, and made possible by the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). All opinions are our own.
