St-Paul de Vence in the south of France
St-Paul de Vence in the South of France is one of the best preserved and prettiest medieval villages in all of Europe. We're going to take you on a walk straight through the middle of St-Paul on the main pedestrian lane from one end of town to the other and later working to show you all the little side streets. Located on the Cote d'Azur along the French Riviera in Provence, this village is one of the prettiest in Europe. The cobblestone lanes here are among the finest that you will ever see.
When you reach the far end of the main lane you exit through another gateway arch and then there's a staircase that leads your right up onto the wall with a lovely viewing platform where you can see across the distant landscape.
The walks round the walls are in part wider, and the small gardens of the houses sloping down to them, with the dark foliage and golden fruit of their orange groves, form a beautiful foreground to the lovely views that are visible off in the distance in every direction.
Saint-Paul de Vence's town wall dates from the 16th century as we see it today and it hugs the contours of the rocky spur on which the village stands, forming a 1 km perimeter that has undergone only slight modifications since the 16th century.
We have created many more movies about this area, the Côte d'Azur, the French Riviera that you can find on our channel, so have a look. You'll see programs about Cannes and Monaco, Monte Carlo, St-Paul, Vence, Villefrance, all around through the region including Antibes, and we really enjoy using Nice as our home base to explore this entire region.
France's Most Beautiful Villages - France Travel Guide
Take a tour of France's Most Beautiful Villages -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
I'd like to show you the Most Beautiful Villages of France:
Embodying France's natural ethereal beauty is the village of Gordes. Engulfed by luxuriant countryside and green hills, it has been deemed one of ''The most beautiful villages of France''. Enshrouded by houses made of stone and terracotta roof tiles, the village exudes warmth and rustic charm.
Overlooking a river gorge, the magnificent town of Rocamadour is built into a nearly sheer cliff face. A historical site of pilgrimage and a place of holy relics, Rocamadour is lit with medieval history. Famous for its monastic buildings and gorgeous churches, the village is among the most sought after French destinations.
The French village of Honfleur has earned a reputation as an artist's town over time. Its timber framed houses adorned with gray facades and cafe terraces endow it with a marked essence of uniqueness. Lovely harbor views coupled with great architecture and weather makes it a beautiful and ethereal holiday destination.
La Roque-Gageac is an amiable village enveloped in the serene waters of the
Dordogne. Compelling town sites include its riverside houses, narrow alleys, and manicured gardens all of which are absolutely delightful. A fortified village in the medieval era, it is beset with archaic manors and enthralling cliffs.
Eguisheim is a quaint village close to the German border. The characteristic narrow, cobble-stoned streets and alleyways strengthen Equisheim's stature as a resplendent medieval town. Due to its proximity to the German lands, a resolute German influence is evident in its language, architecture, and culture.
St Paul de Vence day
We continue on the bus to St-Paul de Vence, a very special town in the south of France in Provence. St-Paul is a medieval village built with stone structures that date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. It had fallen apart in recent times -- early in the 20th century it was quite dilapidated. But it has been fixed up like new, it's amazing, because the art industry has moved in. There are 50 art galleries here of the highest quality. The surrounding countryside has some lovely nature hikes that you might enjoy. You could spend a few days here in St-Paul and never get tired of walking through these little lanes. It's quite small. It's only about a half-mile long and a quarter-mile wide, but each little Lane is worth a close look. You might even see in the morning. Come back in the evening as we shall do in a different movie. Enjoy the different qualities of light and atmosphere. This is a living and breathing work of art.
It started life as a fortified village back in the Middle Ages. It's up on a Hill and they built a stone wall around it, and filled the little village with the stone structures and the stone church in different little town squares, and it has evolved over time into this classic Provençal artists village. Out of all the places that we visited this is the one place that I would not want to miss. It really is special. We are giving you the walking tour as we stroll through the lanes -- it's almost like you're burning some calories just watching these buildings glide by. Even the paving on the lanes is precise and beautiful. There's obviously all lot of money that's flowing through this little town of St-Paul, with these high-end art galleries everywhere. And these monies have been put to good use in fixing up this little village. There is no graffiti, there's no trash, nothing is broken here. Everything is sparkling. Even the dogs have to be careful where they go. They keep the place spic and span, so if you want to see an old medieval village that is as clean as today go visit St-Paul in Provence. You can get there by a city bus as we're doing, and at day's end go back out to the bus stop with everybody else, and hop on your bus back to Nice, which is an hour away.
St-Paul de Vence.

EZE Village & EZE Beach / France
Eze Village and Beach, Cote d'Azur, France.
EZE is a must visit place on the French Riviera. Located conveniently between Nice and Monaco, Eze is both picturesque and historic. The medieval village is perched highly on a rocky cliff 427 metres above sea level overlooking the Mediterranean sea. On the top of the village are located the beautiful Jardin Exotique. The Eze beach is located right below the Eze train station.
The beach is long, but narrow with big pebbles and calm waters.

Villefranche & to Monaco
Today's adventure winds along the eastern shores of the Cote d'Azur where you will discover several small seaside towns and a tiny country with the world's richest inhabitants. The train can take you along most of today's route, but you will find it easier and more interesting to take the bus out and return back by train. Distances are short -- you could travel all the way from one end to the other, Nice to Menton, in 35 minutes by train, so the brief bus rides linking each place are easy to handle and will give you better access to some of the sights.
Begin at the main bus station of Nice, the Gare Routier, located a few blocks east of Place Massena along Boulevard Jean Jaures. Buses leave every 15 minutes, but you might take note of the bus schedules while here, or check on-line at rca.tm.fr. Plan on the 9:10am departure to get a good start on this action-packed day, which will deliver you in just 15 minutes to your first stop, Villefranche, providing a scenic ride along the way with views of the old port of Nice and passing coastal villas.
VILLEFRANCHE
The bus lets you off in the new part of Villefranche, which you don't need to see, so walk downhill towards the Café de la Paix (ask a local if in doubt), then take the steps leading down into the Old Town along Rue l'Eglise. The steps will lead you into a small pedestrian maze of alleys, with shops, galleries and cafes scattered everywhere. For general bearings just keep heading downhill, which leads you towards the waterfront in a few minutes. Along the way notice the arcaded street, Rue Obscure, a historic landmark one block inland from the marina, which is a picturesque boat harbor along the water's edge, lined with a row of outdoor restaurants.
This entire stroll can be done in 45 minutes if you just keep walking, or you could take 2 hours for a more thorough exploration of the side lanes and plazas. Villefranche is a popular cruise port as well, and it's only about 15 minutes away from Monaco, either by bus or by train, but there are a few other villages along the way worth visiting.
You now face the choice of either exploring the adjacent Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula, with its nature walk and impressive mansions, or moving further along the coast.
Antibes on the French Riviera
We are taking you to the wonderful seaside town of Antibes in the south of France. It's along the shores of Provence. This entire stroll through the village of Antibes only takes a couple of hours into this pedestrian zone of the Old Town of Antibes. And stroll about for an hour or two, maybe sit at a café, grab some lunch.

Tourisme Vence dans les Alpes Maritimes
Spécialités gastronomiques, activités culturelles et cité médiévale : Vence est à seulement 30 minutes de Nice.
Provence Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Provence.
Marseille is the oldest city in France, the country’s largest commercial harbour and the capital of Provence, an enchanting region full of contrast. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the fifth century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. Aix-En-Provence, along with its numerous lanes, is one of the most beautiful cities in France. More than forty spectacular fountains help to cool down this ancient town in the hot months of summer when both foreign and French tourists visit the city. ‘Sur Le Pont D’Avignon’ are the words of the world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge as that is the location of its bars! For almost two thousand years an imposing Roman amphitheatre has dominated the city of Nîmes. It is the capital of the Departement Gard that is situated on the periphery of Provence. One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. The town was established in 1240. From the city wall that is eleven metres high and six metres thick, there is a wonderful view across the rooftops of the impregnable city. With historic towns in which both the Romans and the Papacy felt at home, and with blossoming fields of lavender and ancient mountain villages, Provence is a land of sweet aromas and radiant light.

Èze, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France with TranslatorsCafe.com
Interpreters in Nice:
A medieval village Èze is located in the picturesque mountains almost halfway between Nice and Monaco. You can get there in 40 minutes from Nice by bus. Alternatively you could drive. Houses in Èze are nested on the rock like birds’ nests, but the narrow cobblestone streets are cozy and surprisingly green. If you get there early in the morning before the other tourists, you can enjoy a quiet stroll along the charming streets of Èze that remind you of children’s fairytales. Stop by the small shops or galleries, or enjoy people watching in one of the street cafes. Èze residents love their village, and you too can experience its charm by staying for a few days in one of the hotels.
Don’t miss a chance to see a stunning garden and breathtaking views of the Cote d'Azur. Climb to the top of the hill to get to the Jardin Exotique. The garden has many species of cacti and exotic flowers that bloom all year round. In clear weather the panorama of the French Riviera from the garden is unforgettable.
While in Èze, you can also visit the museum of the perfume factory Galimard. You can even create your own perfume there!
A winding path leads from Èze to the beach below. It is known as Nietzsche’s Trail because walks along this path inspired the great philosopher to write his famous work “Thus Spoke Zarathustra”.
France Travel Guide - French Village of Gourdon
Take a tour of French Village of Gourdon in Gourdon, France -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The sheer, forested cliffs of Provence, France give way to the sky-high village of Gourdon.
Also called the Eagle's Nest, Gourdon sits 500 meters above the river Loup and gives sprawling views of rolling hills and the Mediterranean Sea.
The town has gained a reputation for its incredible vistas and its visitor friendly atmosphere.
The beautiful medieval Town Hall, decorated with a small but stately French insignia, is a testament to the steadfast nature of this ancient town.
The small medieval streets contain many beautiful architectural treasures.
To catch a glimpse of this town, travel north from Nice or watch Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief.
Les Baux-de-Provence, France
Les Baux-de-Provence in the south of France is a remarkable sight, a unique stone village dramatically perched 750 feet high on a rocky plateau with a history dating to the Middle Ages, and a prehistory going back probably about 8,000 years. Les Baux was once a powerful medieval castle that controlled vast territories, including 79 other villages throughout Provence, but now it's a tiny quaint ruin.
Charming as could be, this cozy hill-top hamlet is a major tourist attraction with 1.5 million annual visitors, making it the second most-popular site in the region after the Pope's Palace in Avignon. This tells you that it is very worthwhile, but it can get uncomfortably crowded unless you take preventive action, like visiting in the off-season, or arriving early or late in the day.
Subscribe now:
It's only about 3000 feet long and about 700 feet wide and that's it.”
The medieval village was built up from the 10th century and by the peak of occupation during the late 14th century nearly 3,000 people lived in this small space, although the permanent population nowadays living inside the old town is only 20 people.
The plateau was naturally easy to defend due to vertical cliffs all around, and was further reinforced with stone walls and castle as protection from invasion by Franks, Catalans, Saracens and marauding bandits of the chaotic Middle Ages. However the castle was finally attacked and destroyed in the 1600s by Cardinal Richelieu and his large well-armed French army, leaving us with dramatic ruins of the castle, which they call the Château. And it retains a wild setting among rugged rocky hills.
You will not get lost because there is only one main pedestrian lane about 300 meters long with a few short side alleys leading to viewpoints. You really don’t need much of a guidebook to help get through this smallest of Provencal destinations – just follow your nose and wander about. But we do have some suggestions.
There are two parts to visit in Les Baux -- the free village, with its pedestrian lanes, shops, restaurants and old buildings, and the paid attraction, the ruins of that castle on the plateau where you can see some of the old buildings and fortifications.
