Located on the Detroit International Riverfront, the Renaissance Center complex is owned by General Motors as its world headquarters. The central tower is the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, which is the tallest all-hotel skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere (when it first opened in March 1977 it was the tallest hotel in the world) and features the largest rooftop restaurant, Coach Insignia. It has been the tallest building in Michigan since it was erected in 1977.
The Renaissance Center totals 5,552,000 square feet making it one of the world's largest commercial complexes (24th largest in floor space - This type of complex has been termed a city within a city.
The Renaissance Center was conceived by Henry Ford II and financed primarily by the Ford Motor Company. It became the world's largest private development with an anticipated 1971 cost of $500 million, but is said to have generated $1 billion in economic growth for the downtown in its first year. Charles Pugh
I'm a proud Detroiter. Born and raised on the West Side (near Wayne State University), I graduated from Murray-Wright High School in 1989. Go Pilots!
Words cannot describe the pride I feel being able to bring you the news every day. It's been my dream since I was a child.
We all grew up watching Bill Bonds, Beverly Payne, Sonny Eliot and other reporters in this market. So, being able to do the same job as the people we've watched and loved, makes me smile with pride. If you ever see me smiling in my live reports, it's because I'm happy to be working for you as a proud Detroit broadcaster.
My family and I have been through LOTS of tragedy, like the death of both of my parents when I was a child. But, like most Detroiters, I'm a fighter. Like you, I've survived many stumbling blocks and turned them into stepping stones.
Being raised by my grandmother in a poor, yet pride-filled environment has made me a better reporter and anchor. I can relate to everyone, because whatever tragedies I cover, I've probably experienced it in my own life.
My journey back home has taken me to The University of Missouri, the NBC station in Columbia, Missouri; the CBS affiliate in Topeka, Kansas; the NBC affiliate in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and the NBC station in Norfolk, Virginia. It's been a ten-year journey, but I'm finally back.
It's an honor to be in your home each and every day, bringing you the news. I look forward to continuing to earn your trust.

Why People Are Throwing Away Scooters Across the Country
Backlash over the electric scooter craze is growing. Social media videos show people so fed up with the modes of transportation that they are throwing scooters from rooftops. In another video posted to Instagram, one scooter was set on fire. Others are tossed into the trash or ocean. The backlash is happening across the country, but particularly in southern California, where Bird scooters are left on sidewalks for anyone to rent through a cell phone app.

Detroit's Comeback: 'It's Not The Hooligan City That People Make It Out To Be'
Detroit's been through some rough times. The city is bankrupt, people are moving out in droves, and abandoned homes and buildings are scattered throughout town.
It's not the hooligan city that people make it out to be, according to longtime Detroit resident James McGee.
When my colleague Alex Davies and I visited Detroit last month for the Auto Show, we talked to a bunch of Detroiters like McGee. All of them think Detroit is poised for a comeback. Watch and find out why.

Charles Pugh on segway
I took a spin on a segway as part of a kick to CELEBRATE DOWNTOWN DETROIT. The segway is fun. You should take one of the segway tours of downtown. It's a BLAST.
Charles Pugh goes to Pittsburgh to help fix DETROIT
We visited Pittsburgh to learn some valuable lessons about how this city recovered from the MAJOR downturn of the steel industry in the 80's. Now Pittsburgh is AMAZING. So, we want to see how we can bring back some real, practical solutions to our similar challenges.
Higgins Boat
The Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel (LCVP) or Higgins boat was a landing craft used extensively in amphibious landings in World War II. The craft was designed by Andrew Higgins of Louisiana, United States, based on boats made for operating in swamps and marshes. More than 20,000 were built, by Higgins Industries and licensees.
Typically constructed from plywood, this shallow-draft, barge-like boat could ferry a platoon-sized complement of 36 men to shore at 9 knots (17 km/h). Men generally entered the boat by climbing down a cargo net hung from the side of their troop transport; they exited by charging down the boat's bow ramp.

Dangers of rented Bird scooters revealed
Hundreds of Bird scooters have popped up in Downtown Detroit and Ann Arbor. The company touts the scooters as the fast and affordable way to get around, but Local 4 has learned of potential dangers for riders.
