North India: Ladakh #3 (Sham Area - NW Ladakh - Lamanyuru, the Dha Hanu Valley and Thiksey)
Normally we never travel to India in June. Much too warm. But this trip is a real trip to the Himalayas/Ladakh. The passes to Ladakh are often closed till late May - early June en open till September - October. So the timeslot in which you can travel by car to Ladakh is June-July-August. From Delhi and the famous Hindu pilgrimage city Haridwar on the Ganges, we will travel to the residence of the Dalai Lama (Dharamsala) and the hippie haven Manali. From Manali we will travel over land to Leh, Ladakh. Along the way we will cross the second highest mountain pass for cars in the world.
In Ladakh we stay some days in Leh and we make a tour in the Sham Area. We visit Lamayuru monastery, beautifully located deep in the mountains, the Dards of Dah Hanu, the three most beautiful monasteries in the Indus Valley (Thiksey, Takthok and Hermis), Tsho Moriri, a turquoise blue lake at 4530m altitude at the centre of the nomads area, Tsokar lake and Korzok.
We travel to Leh over land because it is the best way to slowly get used to the altitude, and the best way to see the ever changing landscapes.
Part 3:
Part three brings the three-day-Sham Tour. We drive from Leh to Lamayuru. It is a journey through a desolate mountain scenery. Imagine yourself on the Moon. In Lamayuru (3470 m) is the oldest monastery of Ladakh. The monastery is one of the most beautiful places we've ever visited. Breathtaking . From Lamayuru we make a trip over the Fotula pass (4100 m) and the Hanu valley waarwe a village of Dokpa 's visit. A unique population with a particular costume. The women wear a headdress with flowers. Back in Leh we visit the 14th-century monastery Tiksey (3280 m: 17 km from Leh) of the Gelukpa schoo.

Travel beyond with Ethereal on a back-breaking journey to some of the less explored places in Ladakh. This time leave Zanskar behind and reach the villages called Dah and Hanu (Hanoo). These are situated near the Batalik region and this area is also known as the Aryan Valley. It is called so because it is believed that many hundreds of years ago, these people came to Ladakh from central Asia as soldiers of Alexander's army and stayed back in this region.

VILLAGE DHA Part One - Making Class: Ladakh (Dha)
At the end of August 2015 I was invited to teach English in a tiny government school in Dha, a tiny village nestled in between the mountains of the Himalayas.
Dah or Dha is a Brokpa village in the Leh district of India's Jammu and Kashmir state inhabited by the ethnic group known as 'Dard'.
Dards also known as 'Drokpa, Brokpa and Shin' are completely different - physically, culturally, linguistically and socially - from their Tibeto-Mongol neighbours who inhabit the majority of Ladakh.
They speak Indo-Aryan Dardic languages and for centuries during their harvest festival, have been practicing public kissing and wife swapping with no inhibition. This cultural vibrancy is mirrored in their stunning dress and ornamental hair designs.
The Aryans of India || TRADITIONAL LADAKH Festival || Batalik,Dah & Hanoo Village || VagabonDipankar
Bangri Festival at Aryan village, Batalik, Ladakh.
The people or the villagers of Batalik, Dah & Hanoo are actually Aryans of India. You can hire a taxi from Leh or Kargil. TThe journey from Kargil to Khaltse is 156km and then from Khaltse to Leh is 74km. This is a good alternate route to the main Kargil Leh highway. The road is in excellent condition and the entire journey from Kargil to Leh will take 10 to 12 hours if one stops at villages like Dha, Hanu, Batalik.
The festival which I've recorded is the birthday celebration of a new born baby. This is called Bangri Festival. Here you can experience the traditional Ladakhi or Tibetan song, dance, culture and food.
We went there just to enjoy the scenic beauty and found that Bangri Festival was happening on that day. One of the Aryan family served us tea and dry foods. We, a group of 26 tourists has been requested to join their festival and lunch. The kind of experience we gathered, it's a lifetime achievement for all of us.

The Aryans Of India - Pregnancy Tourism In Ladakh | Unique Stories from India
We investigate rumours that European women come to Ladakh to have children with Aryan men.
The residents of the quaint village of Dah near Ladakh claim to be the direct descendants of Alexander the Great himself, making them 'pure-blood' Aryans. With their light eyes and hair, their claims may even be true. We heard rumours that foreign women travel to villages like this one to have children of the supposedly pure Aryan men that live here. Fact or fiction? We set out to explore.

Ladakh Unravelled- Balti/Dards Aryan communities of Himalayas
Dr. Navina Jafa has studied the indigenous communities for several decades and adds this to her academic tours hoping that the communities work to conserve their cultural identities and preserve traditional knowledge.
Migrated from Gilgit Baltistan, their beliefs in the worship of nature they are called Dards/ Brokpas/Aryans / Balti. Having a great knowledge of local herbs Ibex remains central to them as a protector along with sun shown as a swastic. This has several scholars working on DNA processes conclude that they have the association with central Asian indigenous communities.
WION Traveller S2 Episode 4—The Aryans of Dha Bema
From Temisgam, an ancient village that was once the capital of a kingdom, Meraj and Johan head for the Aryan Festival—a cornucopia of dance music and food that celebrates the distinct culture of residents of the Dha and Bema villages who trace their ancestry to the first Aryans that came to the subcontinent.
Homeward bound after a week in Leh, Johan and I take a circuitous route toward Kargil stopping by at Temisgam — an ancient hamlet known for its apricot, walnut and apple orchards. At a centuries-old home stay we’re treated to a decadent breakfast and a traditional medicine man gives us panaceas for all ills. Back in the car and bereft of Google Maps’ orientation we take yet another meandering path via the Indus Valley Road. Appropriately named, this single-lane track passes through the Dha and Bema villages where our duo attend the Aryan Festival—a cornucopia of dance music and food that celebrates the distinct culture of residents of these villages who trace their ancestry to the first Aryans that came to the subcontinent. In spite of our best efforts, we have no option but to reach Kargil and continue their journey toward Suru Valley on the fringes of Zanskar.

Its A Long Drive From Leh to Dha Hanu, Ladakh
If you think the almost three days it took to get to Ladakh from Chicago was difficult, wait until you watch the videos into Zanskar.
The Zanskar region is beyond remote. Composed of several valleys than can only be reached on what passes for a road or on foot. Electrification is just now marching into Zanskar, pole by pole. No cell towers. No telephones period!
We should have been forewarned when Lobsang (our tour operator) said the road would be difficult. But no. Travels With Sheila is always looking for new experiences. Perhaps a lobotomy was performed on me while I slept?
