Swartberg Pass - Prince Albert to Die Hell
A Great motorcycle trip with Lennox, Lain and Jacques. 1316 of dirt and tar, in 3 days.
We went from Cape Town, to Prince Albert, Swellendam, and back to Cape Town.
We tried to do as much dirt and back routes we could, seeing parts of the country seldom seen by the general public.
Great Trip.
Camping in Hell for New Years (die Hel, Gamkaskloof)
2018 was an extremely busy year for us at Rolbos, we started dedicating even more time to our hobby and passion, Rolbos, while at the same time both juggling our regular nine to five’s.
With this in mind, we decided to make our new year’s celebration a quiet one, away from the hustle and bustle of our urban lifestyle. After exploring a few locations we settled on “Die Hel” (The Hell) in the Gamkaskloof Nature Reserve. It’s an isolated valley located in the Swartberg and we recommend only making the journey with a 4x4.
If you would like some more info check out our blog.
This is the route down into Die Hel (The Hell). We used Gaia GPS for the map recoding.

Swartberg Hotel - Accommodation Prince Albert South Africa - Africa Travel Channel
- The Swartberg Hotel is a charming Victorian hotel, situated in the heart of our quaint Karoo village, Prince Albert. Established as a hotel in 1864, the Swartberg is now one of 19 national monuments in the village, and is still the only hotel in Prince Albert today.
Prince Albert is easily reached from the N1 - just 40km from the Prince Albert Road turnoff, and is the perfect stop over if you are traveling between Cape town and the interior of South Africa. The road to Prince Albert from the N2 is a little longer, but the magnificent sights of Meiringspoort or the Swartberg Pass are truly breathtaking, and a chance to experience either should not be missed.

Die Hel - Gamkaskloof
Die Hel - Gamkaskloof, South Africa
The Elands Pass is the final descent down into the long, low altitude valley called Gamkaskloof, but more commonly known as Die Hel. The pass is mostly only single-laned with only a few, very precarious spots for oncoming vehicles to pass by. The road descends 403 vertical metres over 3,64 km producing a very stiff average gradient of 1:9. Mortorcycle riders are advised to stop at the summit and have a good rest before tackling the descent. The views looking west over the valley are indescribably beautiful.

A Short Ride Into Die Hel - Part 1
Bergwater Vineyards Prince Albert - Africa Travel Channel
Bergwater Vineyards is the first winery in the Great Karoo. Designed by local architect Mr John Whitton, the aim is to blend in with the beautiful environment using natural stone and rock. 70 hectares of vineyards are neatly farmed in a holistic and organic way. The rest of the 1500 hectares is preserved as a Nature Reserve. Due to low rainfall, dry climate, cool southerly winds, and cold nights - even in summer - diseases are non-existent. And thus the farm is able to function holistically in harmony with nature. No hazardous sprays are used. Dorper sheep graze between the vineyards during winter and control all the weeds. The sheep manure becomes good compost; meaning that Bergwater does not have to use chemical fertilizers. The healthy holistic grapes which are produced enable the winemaker, Mariska Schreuder, to craft world-class wines. She was selected as a finalist for the Woman Winemaker of the Year competition, on the merits of her Shiraz Reserve. This beautiful wine has been served on KLM's Royal Business Class for 3 years consecutively. Bergwater Vineyards also offers a fully furnished self-catering guesthouse where guests can relax, drinking world-class wine and experiencing nature and a holistic farming environment.
