Corinth Canal: overlooking Diolkos - 31july2011
The deterioration of Ancient Diolkos has been going on for decades right at the feet -and in direct view- of one of the two control towers of the Corinth Canal (the one at the Corinthian Gulf). Appallingly (as I recently found out) in 1980 it was established that the Canal Company (which had just passed fully to the Greek State) would include in its 9-members' board of directors, one high official of the MINISTRY OF FINANCE and two representatives of the local government (the cities of Corinth and Loutraki). ( I subsequently was told that locals participated in the Canal Company even earlier). The HEAVY involvement of the Ministry of Finance AND local society explains - between a lot of other things - why local people were so silent about Diolkos being wiped out BY the Canal... or why the officials of the Ministry of Culture were so confident in LYING about their protection of the defenseless monument: they thought nobody would ever EXPOSE the destruction!!! False descriptions of the erosion were given BY THE RELEVANT SERVICES of the Greek Ministry of Culture even in 2006 and 2007...
==============
Please beware!!!!! The Ministry of Culture makes it a habit to give promises which PROVE empty later. Actually they have the habit of MANIPULATING whatever item of care (usually totally fictitious but also some real steps that they have been FORCED to take) in order to FURTHER ABBANDON the monument!!!!
