About 3 hours by road from Chiang Mai is the lesser-known city of the north – Chiang Rai. It is in the middle and has all three boarders of Thailand, Laos and Burma coming together at one point. This town has gone through one of the biggest transformations seen anywhere in Thailand.
???????? Doi Tung Thai Army Checkpoint, Chiang Rai
Video taken after the rain storm. Great view of neighboring Myanmar (Burma). There is still occasional drug running along this border since there is no natural landmark to mark the border with Burma, e.g. a river, simply the mountain ridge itself and Thai farmers literally rub shoulders with their Burmese counterparts, hence this fortified viewpoint and the numerous army checkpoints you may pass along the way. Climb the stairs and find gun emplacements, trenches, pillboxes, a small memorial and a small army camp where soldiers of the Thai army keep an eye on the Burmese whose soldiers are in camp of their own just few hundred meters down the road.
เที่ยวกันเถอะ Doi Inthanon
Doi Inthanon (Thai: ดอยอินทนนท์ (Pronunciation)) is the highest mountain in Thailand. It is located in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province. This mountain is an ultra prominent peak and was also known in the past as Doi Luang (meaning big mountain) or Doi Ang Ka, meaning the crow's pond top. Near the mountain's base was a pond where many crows gathered. The name Doi Inthanon was given in honour of the king Inthawichayanon, one of the last kings of Chiang Mai, who was concerned about the forests in the north and tried to preserve them. He ordered that after his death his remains shall be placed at Doi Luang, which was then renamed.
Today, the summit of Doi Inthanon is a popular tourist destination for both foreign and Thai tourists, with a peak of 12,000+ visitors visiting the summit on New Year's Day. In addition to a range of tourist facilities on the summit, there is also a Royal Thai Air Force weather radar antenna on the summit.

Since being founded by Thailand's Princess Mother (mother of the current king) in 1969, the Mae Fah Luang project has aimed to rehabilitate the people and the environment around the golden triangle. The golden triangle is the shared border area between Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. The area was previously most well known for it's production of opium, the illicit cash crop which ravaged communities who cleared the forest to grow the plant at high altitudes.
To rehabilitate the area the foundation has created several initiatives including it's cottage industry of social enterprises which include Doi Tung coffee, textiles, mulberry paper (aka sa paper), and pottery. These businesses provide jobs to the community and build off of the skills the villager's knowledge, while hiring educated young people to perform more advanced tasks.
In addition to the cottage industry businesses, there is also the Mae Fah Luang Gardens, Arboretum, Krua Thamnak Restaurant, and the macadamia/coffee cultivation projects.

Doi Suthep + Coffee Plantation | Chiang Mai Day Trip
Vlog 58 of many.
Location: Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai, Thailand.
We rented motor bikes and drove to the most beautiful temple in Chiang Mai - Doi Suthep! Doi Suthep is set up on top of a mountain. It's an easy 30 minute motorbike ride outside of the city. We highly recommend renting a motor bike to drive to the Doi Suthep Temple because the roads are really curvy and a lot of fun on a bike.
Do Suthep is a great day trip, especially if you continue on to the mountain village and coffee plantation. If you want to visit all three in the same day, it will take 6 - 8 hours. However, I believe this is one of the best day trips in Chiang Mai!
Chiang Mai is an amazing city, but a day trip outside of the city will give you an even greater appreciation for the city. Chiang Mai is quickly becoming our favorite city in Thailand! Next up, a day trip to the sticky waterfall!

MOUNTAINS ON THE BORDER - Phu Chi Fa & Doi Pha Tang
A stressful visa run turn'd long-distance road trip for Mameow - her first time going cross-country on the SV650, two days and almost 800km (because we did more than just visit Phu Chi Fa and Doi Pha Tang).
Phu Chi Fa has been on the 'bucket list' for a while, a tall shard of rock with somewhat of an overhang which overlooks Laos.
In the evening we stayed at a lovely little Homestay with a very warm and welcoming couple, and the next morning we were even treated to some strawberry picking.
We followed up to Doi Pha Tang, which according to photos is quite stunning, but in our case it was almost permanently shrouded in cloud which made photography somewhat difficult. Without the time left to wait for a midday sun to clear the air, we set off into the distance.
Overall I would've liked to include more information in the video itself, spoken or otherwise, but given the rush I simply didn't have time to film much of that kind of thing.
Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, Phu Chi Fah and Doi Pha Tang, up to Mae Sai and finally back to Chiang Mai, in two days. A first time for Mameow covering such long distance on her bike, and definitely not the last.

Road Trip Thailand - Phu Chi Fah ภูชี้ฟ้า
I was searching for an attraction spot from Chiang Rai that is not overly crowded by foreigners, something that is well preserved and not overly commercialized.
Came across Chris and Angela's website (
i was then at the Phayao Lake, it was a 4-5 Hour trip to the highlands, I hesitated once and twice, but decided it must be worth it. Turned out i even stayed overnight to wait for the sunrise!
What a stunning location!

Doi Tung, Chiang Rai, Thailand
Located very near to the border between Thailand and Myanmar, Doi Tung is a unique mountain that made history in the province... It is closely related to the history of Mae Fah Luang (see details in more information).
When opium was still smuggled in the Golden Triangle, Doi Tung had been widely deforested and damaged in order to crop poppy. Ethnic minorities were treated as slaves by the smugglers and severely addict to opium...
As from 1986 a tiny but tenacious old woman: the Princess Mother Srinakarin, undertook the rehabilitation of the whole mountain. She literally turned this hell into a paradise.
Nowadays, Doi Tung has been reforested, poppy fields have been eradicated, smugglers have been ousted and the whole mountain has been turned in a real green model.
The story of this huge achievement is being told in the Hall of Inspiration. Healthy and prosperous ethnic communities live in harmony with their own environment and a superb botanical garden offers a unique setting for nature lovers.
