Dollar Glen and Castle Campbell - June 2019
Dollar Glen.
The glen is dominated by and home to fifteenth century Castle Campbell which was the former lowland stronghold of the Clan Campbell.
This walk offers a pleasing and dramatic circular tour. The woodland in the glen shows signs of having been coppiced in past times to provide a constant supply of smaller timber, possibly for charcoal burners or for local woodworkers to make domestic utensils and furniture.
Explorer 366: Stirling and Ochil Hills West.
Height gain: 280 metres.

Castle Campbell & Dollar Glen In The Snow & Ice
Dollar Glen is a classic spot for a lazy Sunday afternoon stroll with the kids........ that is, if I had children I'm quite sure that it would be ideal.
Waterfall at Dollar Glen
Situated in Dollar, less than 45 minutes out of either Glasgow or Edinburgh, it offers some very calming scenery. The emphasis is on a gentle stroll rather than a fearsome hike and the paths are all suitably maintained.
There are enough tracks to happily idle away a couple of hours and a wander up to the castle is a must.
In summary, Dollar Glen will fulfill the weekend necessity of feeling that you have done something active outdoors without requiring 4 days to recover from the exersion.
Start from the carpark which is a few hundred metres up the hill from Dollar Golf course.
As with Bracklinn Falls there are a few different tracks that can be followed and a clear mounted map is shown at the carpark. There is sufficient walking for a really easy afternoon.
Once you've wandered happily through the wooded areas, there are always the gardens of Castle Campbell at the top of the hill.
Relax and enjoy..... you can always sweat it out properly on a munro next weekend.
CASTLE CAPMBELL.....
A Lowland stronghold for a Highland chief
Everyone is awestruck by Castle Campbell. The imposing ruin stands in solemn isolation upon a narrow ridge, overlooked by a crescent of the Ochil Hills. Two precipitous ravines hem it on either side, through which thunder the Burn of Care and the Burn of Sorrow. The setting couldnt be more dramatic.
The oldest part of the stone castle was built in the early 15th century. At that time it was called Castle Glume. Around 1465 it passed through marriage to Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll. This powerful Highland chief needed a secure but impressive Lowland seat at the heart of the realm, within easy reach of the main centres of the royal court. Castle Glume fitted the bill perfectly. In 1489, the earl changed the name to Castle Campbell. And there the Campbells stayed for the next 200 years, until they tired of all those steps and relocated to Argylls Lodging, a fine townhouse beside Stirling Castle.

Dollar Clackmannanshire- Walking In The Ochils- Scotland
Dollar (Scottish Gaelic: Dolair More likely interpretations are that Dollar is derived from Doilleir, an Irish and Scots Gaelic word meaning dark and gloomy, or from various words in Pictish Gaelic: 'Dol' (field) + 'Ar' (arable) or Dol (valley) + Ar (high). ) is a small town in Clackmannanshire, Scotland. It is one of the Hillfoots Villages, situated between the Ochil Hills range to the north and the Devon River to the south. Dollar is on the A91 road, which runs from Stirling to St. Andrews, and is around 3 miles east of Tillicoultry.
The major attraction in Dollar is the five hundred year-old Castle Campbell, lowland seat of the Duke of Argyll, where Queen Mary of Scotland once lived in the 16th century. The residence was chosen for its proximity to the court in Edinburgh and Clackmannan Tower, Alloa, Stirling Castle and Linlithgow Palace.
The walk to the castle is a vigorous ascent by a spectacular series of paths, bridges and walkways within the deep gorges of the glen and its tributaries. Unfortunately, the most spectacular section has had to be closed due to the risk of landslip (a part of which was re-opened Summer 2007), but alternative routes are available. There is also a road, accessible by car, to the castle for the less energetic.
At the foot of Dollar Glen there is The Mill Green. Here there is also a small museum which is run by volunteers, which contains an interesting collection of local items, and much information about the former Devon Valley Railway, which closed in the 1970s. There are plenty of sports facilities, including an 18-hole golf course (notable for its steep inclines and lack of bunkers), a tennis club, a squash club, and a cricket club. The Ochil Hills that overlook Dollar provide opportunity for mountain biking. The nearby Devon river is occasionally used for fishing. There are two churches, one Church of Scotland and one English Episcopalian.
Castle Campbell, Dollar, Scotland
Dramatically situated above Dollar Glen is the forbidding looking 15th-century fortress, Castle Campbell.
The castle was the lowland stronghold of the powerful Campbell earls of Argyll, who were seldom far from the major political and religious events of late medieval Scotland. Attractive terraced gardens.
