Time comes to watch blue whales in Loreto of Mexico
Water spouting by blue whales has made Town Loreto in the Pacific island state of Baja California Sur an important stop for visitors coming to Mexico, especially during the last week of January and the first week of February.
(Soundbite) Jose Carlos Cota Osuna, Tourism Official
There are now one or two blue whales making a sight. This is the only part (in Mexico) where you can see blue whales. The season is coming.
Blue whales used to converge to Loreto for their breeding cycle during the beginning of each year, which catalyzes the local government to incubate an ambitious plan to develop its tourism sector, with other unique resources considered as a package.
(Soundbite) Enrique de la Madrid Cordero, Federal Secretary of Tourism
What we can offer is a variety of choices. Loreto is attractive when compared to other developed markets.
Maritime creatures and historical vestiges combine to make Loreto an attractive must-see for travelers and nature lovers.
When watching dolphins swim in groups in his front, how can a tourist contain his appreciation of the town and resist the temptation of coming again next January?

Romantic Gray Whales Put on a Show for Dolphins & Whale Watchers off Laguna Beach
Two gray whales, seemingly in love, took a short break from their migration to engage in courtship behavior off of Laguna Beach, California. Surrounded by a pod of curious dolphins, and just a few feet away, whale watchers aboard our catamaran, the gray whales twirled around each other.
In rarely seen energetic displays of behavior, the whales rolled on their backs and splashed their tail flukes and pectoral flippers on the surface of the water. Throughout the up-close encounter our catamaran remained in neutral so the whales were undisturbed.
According to Capt. Tom Southern, he has never seen behavior quite like this in his 17 years of whale watching.
Each year gray whales leave the feeding grounds of the Bering and Chukchi Seas to make a 12,000-mile round trip journey to Baja, Mexico, and back. Gray whales have one of the longest migrations of any mammal. Along the way they face threats including killer whales and entanglement in fishing gear. Nearly 1,000 dolphins and whales die every day, worldwide, in fishing gear entanglement. Captain Dave helped organize Orange County's first whale disentanglement group and has successfully disentangled several gray whales, including the gray whale Lily, whose rescue made national headlines.

Beautiful Blue Whales off Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico
This is a day out on the water with my family watching blue whales off Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Its what I managed to get on film. When my memory card was full the last blue whale in this film was diverted toward our boat when three other boats arrived on its other side. We were just floating in the water. The whale then dove under the front of our boat, turned on its side and its eye met ours. Meanwhile I hugged my kids while we stood on the front platform of the boat and above this whale. It slowly and gently slid through the water waving its ventral fin at us and showing off the entire length of its body, only a few feet below us. Then its large fluke pushed it off as it passed us and dove. Its blue color faded as it went down.
This was my first day out in the boat WITHOUT a fishing rod! It took awhile to learn behavior of the whales and get good video of them, but not bad for an amateur, huh? This day with the whales was every bit as good as a two thousand pupil school of 20-35 pound dorado who hit every fly cast to them, all day long!! Enjoy-
