Dolphins and Whales Canso Causeway- Cape Breton, Nova Scotia 2017
Cape Breton Island - It was a beautiful, calm day so we ventured out to see the humpback whales and the white sided dolphins at the Causeway. While my wife took photos from the bank, I journeyed out in the kayak to get a closer look. I also got a closer look at the DFO (Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans). They were out checking on the whale due to calls that it might be tangled in fishing net or line. I placed my GoPro on the deck of my kayak due to being in a rush to get out. Otherwise I would have used my helmet cam.

Whale Watching Boat Joins Naval Fleet
NANOOSE BAY - A whale watching boat from Campbell River is patrolling the waters of Nanoose Bay, but it isn't searching for Orca's or Hump Backs. The Royal Canadian Navy's HMCS Victoria is firing unarmed torpedoes in the waters of the Maritime Experimental test Range near Nanoose Bay and the whale watching boat is keeping other ships out.
After the Canadian Navy's normal patrol boat was damaged last year officials leased a civilian whale watching boat to take its place. Crew who man the 30 passenger whale tour ship say it is perfectly suited for the job. Master Seaman Rich Loy saying we have a lot more navigation gear to track boats on the testing range the patrol boat crewmen adding, we never had that before.
Canada's only operational submarine will continue to use the Naval testing grounds just outside of Nanoose Bay to hone their torpedo skills, but the crew of the whale watching vessel will soon have to say goodbye to their ship. The Canadian military only brought in the civilian boat to fill the gap between normal military patrol ships. A new patrol vessel is expected on the water in the next two months.

Pilot Whales - Oshan Whale Watch from Bay St. Lawrence, Nova Scotia
We joined Captain Fraser for a half day excursion in July. We were treated with close up viewing of a pod of pilot whales. Unfortunately we didn't see any of the larger whales that are common in the area. Oshan Whale Watch operates out of Bay St. Lawrence which is a tiny fishing village at the very top of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia Canada.

Baby Whale Birth, Pleasant Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada
A once-in-a-lifetime sight for us while on vacation on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. At least 100 pilot whales gathered for the birth of a baby, and they formed a protective circle around the mother and baby. Captain Mark's Whale and Seal Cruise was fantastic!
