Dorneck Castle, Switzerland
Please enjoy my short movie of the atmospheric ruins of Dorneck Castle, filmed at a time when there were very few other visitors, and with no soundtrack, just the ambient noise of birdsong.
Dorneck Castle is accessed by taking the train south to Dornach from Basel, and enjoying a pleasant walk up through woods until you come to the fairytale ruined walls of Dorneck.
Some visitors have complained that there are no notices to interpret the ruins, but to my mind the absence of visitor-attraction development makes the experience of this magical place all the more enchanting. If you enjoyed this video, please consider subscribing to my channel.

Gempen & Ruine Dorneck Switzerland ????????
Die Gemeinde Gempen Liegt im Nördlichen Zipfel des Kantons Solothurn, hier der in den Kanton Basel-Landschaft RAGT. Gempen is on DM Gempenplateau 676 m ü. M. und rund 80 Meter Höher Erhebt Sich sterben weitherum Sichtbare Schartenfluh, irrtümlicherweise von Vielen Gempenstollen Genannt, with the Gempenturm, Einem 28 Meter Hohen Aussichtsturm auf 759 m ü. M.
The castle Dorneck is not documented before the mid-14th century, but archaeological finds date it back to the 11th century. So probably the von Pfeffingen were the founders.
In the following centuries the castle changed ownership several times (Habsburg, Thierstein, von Efrigen, von Hallwil, Solothurn). Most of the owners were more interested in the tax income from the villages associated with the castle than in the building itself. Thus it was in a relatively poor condition. Nevertheless the garrison was able to defend itself against a imperial army in 1499.
After this battle the castle was strengthened and extended to a real fortress. Substantial amounts were invested to prepare for modern artillery warfare. The castle remained undefeated for three centuries, including the Thirty Years' War. In 1798 castle Dorneck was conquered by French troops and put out of service. For over a century the ruin was used as a quarry by the local population.

Dornach (338 m above sea level) lies between the river Birs and the slightly elevated Gempen Plateau. Aesch (312 m above sea level) lies at the opposite side of the river. The Birs flows through the Jura Mountains and joins the Rhine at Basel (259 m above sea level). It crosses a number of Jura ridges along its way to the largest feeding river of the North Sea. Its course is thus characterized by several gorges. Before Aesch, it flows through a narrow for the last time. Angenstein Castle, which lies in the municipal area of Duggingen, sits enthroned above it.
Other than Aesch, which belongs to the canton of Basel-Land, Dornach belongs to the canton of Solothurn. A popular sight in Dornach is the Goetheanum, a building almost without right angles. This exposed concrete building was built on the initiative of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and esoteric. Today, the Goetheanum serves as headquarters for the Anthroposophical Society founded by Steiner.

Dornach.

The footage in this video belongs entirely to me, I shot it with my camera drone, DJI Phantom 4 Pro, the only high quality tool I have to create videos at the moment.
If you want to see the video in a higher quality, (Yes I was shocked by the low quality after the upload on YouTube!) here is a open one-drive link to other versions, also with included subtitles:
