GERMANY: Drachenfels Railway, Königswinter
The Drachenfels Railway (German: Drachenfelsbahn) is a rack railway line in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. The line runs from the city of Königswinter to the summit of the Drachenfels mountain at an altitude of 289 m (948 ft). Besides the two terminal stations, an intermediate station serves the Schloss Drachenburg. The line is 1.5 km (0.93 mi) long and is single track. The Drachenfels Railway is one of only four rack railways still operational in Germany.
The Drachenfels (Dragon's Rock) is a hill of 321 metres (1,053 ft) in the Siebengebirge uplands between Königswinter and Bad Honnef. The hill was formed by rising magma that could not break through to the surface, and then cooled and became solid underneath. It is the subject of much tourism and romanticism. It overlooks the river Rhine.
The ruined castle Burg Drachenfels, on the summit of the hill, was built between 1138 and 1167 by Archbishop Arnold I of Cologne and bears the same name. It was originally intended for the protection of the Cologne region from any assault from the south.

Drachenfels Königswinter castle A visit to Dragon (2019):: Things to do in Bonn(Germany) (English)
The Drachenfels is a very beautiful and natural place with beautiful scenery. Several legends surround the Drachenfels, most famous Siegfried-the hero of the Nibelungenlied who killed the dragon which was used to live in the cave in the hill and bathed in his blood to become invulnerable that is why it is known as “dragons rock”.
There are beautiful trek and lovely scenery along with all the way up to the hill, and then you can reach to next iconic place the Schloss Drachenburg that is ???? the castle that was built in 1882 by Stephan von sarter. This is a beautiful place for lunch and to have a good time with your friends.

Between Königswinter and Bad Honnef there stands Drachenfels (Dragon's rock). As legend goes the famous Siegfried, the hero of the Nibelungenlied, killed the dragon Fafnir, who resided in a cave in the hill, then bathed in its blood to become invulnerable.

The Drachenfels Railway, Königswinter, Germany - 29th January 2012
The Drachenfels (Dragon's Rock) is a mountain 321 metres (1,053 ft) in the Siebengebirge mountain range between Königswinter and Bad Honnef in Germany.
The ruined castle atop the mountain, built between 1138 and 1167 by Archbishop Arnold I of Cologne bears the same name and was originally intended for the protection of Cologne to the south. Originally it consisted of a bergfried with court, chapel and living quarters for servants. The castle was slighted in 1634, during the Thirty Years' War, by the protestant Swedes and never rebuilt. As a strategic asset it had outlived its usefulness. Erosion due to the continued quarrying undermined much of the remains and only a small part is left today.
The rock, like the rest of the Siebengebirge, is formed by the remnants of a volcano and has been the site of a trachyte quarry since Roman times, which, amongst others delivered the building material for the Cologne Cathedral. Of all the mountains in the Siebengebirge, it's closest to the river Rhine, which facilitates easy transport by barges, thus making it an excellent place for a quarry. This ended in 1836, when the Prussian government bought the quarry. In 1922 the first protection measures were put in place and in 1956 the site was declared a national park.
A neogothic castle, lower on the mountain, is named Schloss Drachenburg and was built in 1882 by Baron Stephan von Sarter. Both the top and Schloss Drachenburg can be reached by the Drachenfelsbahn, a rack railway built in the 19th century to satify demand from growing tourism.
This video features views of the Drachenfelsbahn, and views from it on both the journeys up and down the mountain. At the top of the mountain the views feature the valley of the River Rhine and Königswinter / Nordrhein Westphalia below.

Review: Drachenfels Hotel Königswinter, North Rhine Westphalia, Germany - January 2014
While visiting Königswinter recently, I stayed at the Drachenfels Hotel. I had booked with Booking.com for the Drachenfels Hotel Guesthouse, but upon arrival I was given a room at the main hotel and not at the guesthouse. I didn't mind this at all, as the hotel is in a more scenic location being by the side of the River Rhine.
I liked the hotel and would stay there again, but must point out the following:
1. The staff do not speak very much English (hardly any at all really), this didn't bother me, but it may bother the less adventurous.
2. Some of the rooms are more modern than others, e.g. room 31 was nicer than room 32.
3. Noise travels a lot around the hotel at night, and the hotel bedroom doors close with a real bang - if you are a light sleeper this could potentially bother you.
4. The reception closes at 22:00 (10pm).
5. If you arrive after 22:00, your room keys will be outside in the right hand side plant-pot - as mine were.
6. Breakfast was not included in the room price, but I was given it for free anyway.
7. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from Königswinter station, it is a gentle walk along quiet streets. If you are travelling from Bonn to Königswinter get the tram and not the train, if you are travelling from Cologne get the train.
8. Enjoy Königswinter, it really is a lovely place, but the freight trains are 24 hours and they are quite noisy. Just something to consider.

Drachenfels, Königswinter, North Rhine Westphalia, Germany - 8th January, 2014
The Drachenfels (Dragon's Rock) is a hill that rises 321 metres in the Siegenberge uplands in North Rhine Westphalia by the side of the River Rhine, in-between Königswinter and Bad Honnef in Germany.
The hill is served by a mountain railway, the Drachenfelsbahn (Drachenfels Railway), which dates back to 1883, and runs for 289 metres from Königswinter almost to the Drachenfels summit.
This video features footage of the Drachenfels Railway including the museum at Königswinter, and edited highlights of the journey up the hill. From the top of the hill there are views of the railway, and surrounding woodland / countryside. There are shots over the River Rhine, and some of the river traffic, as well as passing trains on the valley floor below. The film also features views of the towns of Bad Honnef, Königswinter, Bad Godesberg, Plittersdorf, Oberdollendorf and views towards the cities of Bonn, Cologne and Koblenz.
The video ends with highlights of the journey back down the hill on the Drachenfels Railway. This footage was taken on an unseasonably warm and sunny day in January 2014. This is my third visit to the Drachenfels, and I would definitely recommend it to other visitors to this part of Germany.
