The Drachenfelsbahn and Drachenfels views, Königswinter, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany: 9th Aug, 2017
Drachenfelsbahn (Drachenfels Railway) and views from the Drachenfels, Königswinter, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany - 9th August, 2017.
In August 2017 I had a five day break in Germany, travelling from Stuttgart to Düsseldorf. En-route I stayed one night in Königswinter.
This film features views of and from the Drachenfelsbahn as it ascends and descends the Drachenfels in Königswinter. It features the complete journeys, taken from a front mounted Veho Muvi action cam, as well as extensive views from the summit of the Drachenfels including views of the Nordrhein-Westfalen and Rhineland-Palatinate landscape and the Rhine Valley below.
Within the film, the following locations and features are identified: Drachenfelsbahn, Löwenburg, Meerberg, Bad Honnef, River Rhine, Nonnenwerth, Rhöndorf, Wachtberg, Fraunhofer Institut für Kommunikation, Ein Sagenhafter Ort, Mehlem, Bonn, Cologne, and Burg Drachenfels.
The Drachenfels (Dragon's Rock) is a hill (321 metres (1,053 ft)) in the Siebengebirge uplands between Königswinter and Bad Honnef in Germany, that is the subject of much tourism and romanticism in the North Rhine-Westphalia area. To read more about the Drachenfels, click here: .
The Drachenfels Railway (Drachenfelsbahn) is a rack railway line in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. The line runs from Königswinter to the summit of the Drachenfels mountain at an altitude of 289 m (948 ft). Besides the two terminal stations, an intermediate station serves the Schloss Drachenburg. GERMANY: Drachenfels Railway, Königswinter
The Drachenfels Railway (German: Drachenfelsbahn) is a rack railway line in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. The line runs from the city of Königswinter to the summit of the Drachenfels mountain at an altitude of 289 m (948 ft). Besides the two terminal stations, an intermediate station serves the Schloss Drachenburg. The line is 1.5 km (0.93 mi) long and is single track. The Drachenfels Railway is one of only four rack railways still operational in Germany.
The Drachenfels (Dragon's Rock) is a hill of 321 metres (1,053 ft) in the Siebengebirge uplands between Königswinter and Bad Honnef. The hill was formed by rising magma that could not break through to the surface, and then cooled and became solid underneath. It is the subject of much tourism and romanticism. It overlooks the river Rhine.
The ruined castle Burg Drachenfels, on the summit of the hill, was built between 1138 and 1167 by Archbishop Arnold I of Cologne and bears the same name. It was originally intended for the protection of the Cologne region from any assault from the south.

KÖNIGSWINTER - Drachenfels (The castled crag of Drachenfels)
One of the most legendary places in North Rhine-Westphalia is the Drachenfels in Königswinter, which is also one of my favorite places. Not only because this is supposed to be where Siegfried may have killed the dragon Fafnir of the Nibelungen saga and bathed in its blood, but also because of wonderful Rhine views when you've made the climb. This may be facilitated by a trip with the Drachenfels Railway, a cogwheel train, which has already been operated since 1883.
Halfway we find the Nibelungen Hall, built in 1913, with paintings by Hermann Hendrich which tell the story of the Nibelungen saga. Affiliated with it, a cave with a 13 meters-long stone dragon and a reptile park. Beneath the Dragon Castle is a small rocky sea of trachyte stones, the Drachenfels is especially known for this rock which was used for the construction of the Cologne Cathedral. Arriving at the top of the hill we encounter the ruins of Castle Drachenfels, wherefrom we can enjoy the view of the Seven Mountains and the Rhine.
As there are so many images and impressions of the Drachenfels I filmed my trip in two parts. Next week there will be a more detailed look at Castle Drachenburg, which is on the way up to the Drachenfels ..
