Detmold is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with a population of about 73,400 . It was the capital of the small Principality of Lippe from 1468 until 1918 and then of the Free State of Lippe until 1947. Today it is the administrative center of the district of Lippe and of the Regierungsbezirk Detmold. The Church of Lippe has its central administration located in Detmold. The Reformed Redeemer Church is the preaching venue of the state superintendent of the Lippe church.

1. Hermannsdenkmal Detmold
The Hermannsdenkmal is a monument located southwest of Detmold in the district of Lippe, in Germany. It stands on the densely forested Grotenburg, sometimes also called the Teutberg or Teut, a hill in the Teutoburger Wald range. The monument is located inside the remains of a circular rampart. The monument was constructed between 1838 and 1875 to commemorate the Cherusci war chief Arminius and his victory over Rome at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. When the statue was built, its location was believed to be near the original battle site, although experts now consider it more likely that the battle took place near Kalkriese, about 100 km to the north-west.

The Externsteine [ˈɛkstɐnʃtaɪnə] is a distinctive sandstone rock formation located in the Teutoburg Forest, near the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg in the Lippe district of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The formation is a tor consisting of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills. In a popular tradition going back to an idea proposed to Hermann Hamelmann in 1564, the Externsteine are identified as a sacred site of the pagan Saxons, and the location of the Irminsul idol reportedly destroyed by Charlemagne; there is however no archaeological evidence that would confirm the site's use during the relevant period. GERMANY: Detmold, city of culture [HD]

Detmold is better known as the city of culture in the Teutoburg Forest (Germany).
More than 600 historic buildings adorn the city. Small half-timbered houses alternate with proud plastered buildings.

Detmold is the city of culture for everyone. The Regional Theatre Detmold, the Highschool for Music and the Summer Theatre offer a broad spectrum of performances ranging from classic to modern.

A varied programme of open-air events in a historic ambience, such as the Summer Stage and the International Street Theatre Festival, cabaret and more, has secured Detmold`s reputation as a cultural centre.

The Literature Office OWL, numerous museums, schools, colleges and the Lippe State Library all contribute to a fertile cultural climate.

GERMANY: Hermann Monument - Teutoburg Forest [HD]

On top of the Hermannsdenkmal (Hermann Monument) you have a spectacular view of the area.
The statue is 53,46m high and is situated in Teutoburg Forest, southwest of Detmold in the district of Lippe, Germany.

It can be seen from many different points of the county, looming above the land from its high point on the densely forested and 386m tall mountain Grotenburg.

The Hermannsdenkmal depicts Hermann (Arminius in Latin), who defeated the Romans in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9 A.D., thus driving them out of the land. This is why the figure crushes the Roman Eagle under its foot.

Construction was started in 1841, but not completed until 1875 with the help of substantial funds from the state of Prussia.

It was built according to plans by the sculptor Ernst von Bandel, who devoted his whole life to it. During construction he lived in a small hut a short distance from the statue (Bandel-Hütte) that can still be visit today.
