A look around Burg Blankenheim - a DJH German Castel Hostel
This is a little look around the German DJH Youth Hostel Burg Blankenheim which overlooks the village of Blankenheim in Germany. It's a simple but atmospheric castle hostel, close to the Eifel National Park.
The best thing about the Eifel is there is nothing here, says our host at Hostel Blankenheim. Well, for a place with nothing it kept us pretty busy. We found ourselves biking field and forest around the National Park, cheering on classic cars at a world famous racetrack at Nürburgring and racing around a castle that was built as a display of power and wealth but now offers charming hostel accommodation. Check out the video for a taste of the character of Jugendherberge Burg Blankenheim.
The German Youth Hostel Association (DJH Jugendherbergen in Deutschland) has a selection of hostels set in castles. We took a road trip across Germany to check them out and made this series of videos to give you a glimpse inside.

Places to see in ( Koblenz - Germany ) Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
Places to see in ( Koblenz - Germany ) Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
At 118 metres above the Rhine, the fortress has the most fantastic views over Koblenz and the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, the second largest preserved fortress in Europe, was constructed in its present form between 1817 and 1828. Its origin dates back to the year 1000. Today the fortress is home to the Landesmuseum Koblenz with its diverse exhibitions (e.g. the technical history and archaeology of the country, fortress history with over 20 exciting stations, multimedia presentations and much more), and is also home to the Ehrenmal des Heeres army monument and the Koblenz youth hostel.
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is a fortress in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, on the east bank of the Rhine where it is joined by the Moselle, overlooking the town of Koblenz. Occupying the position of an earlier fortress destroyed by the French in 1801, it was built as the backbone of the regional fortification system, Festung Koblenz, by Prussia between 1817 and 1828 and guarded the middle Rhine region, an area that had been invaded by French troops repeatedly before. The Prussian fortress was never attacked. Since 2002, Ehrenbreitstein has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
Ehrenbreitstein is located on the eastern bank of the Rhine at Koblenz in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It overlooks the confluence of the Mosel and the Rhine. The peak of the hill, which shares the name, is 118 metres above the Rhine. It is the northernmost point of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Ehrenbreitstein, the hill on which the eponymous fortress is now located, was first settled in the 4th millennium BC, fortifications were built in the 10th/9th century BC. In the 3rd to 5th centuries AD a Roman fortification was sited there. More settlement followed in the 8th/9th centuries under the Carolingian dynasty.
According to the Final Act of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the Rhineland became a Prussian province. The fortification of the Koblenz area became a Prussian military priority, because of its proximity to France and the fact that Koblenz was a bottleneck for all means of transportation (ships, railways, land transportation because of bridges). Hence, the Prussians built a system of fortification around Koblenz, the so-called Festung Koblenz (Fortress Koblenz), from 1815 until 1834. This referred to the strong ring of fortifications around Koblenz, of which the Festung Ehrenbreitstein was a part. Fortress Koblenz was said to have been the largest military fortress in Europe except for Gibraltar. Ehrenbreitstein could be defended by up to 1200 soldiers.
The fortress is open to visitors. It is connected to the town of Koblenz across the Rhine by a cable car and by an inclined lift to the foot of the hill. Ehrenbreitstein houses several museums: Haus der Fotografie (photography), Haus der Archäologie (archaeology) and the Landesmuseum Koblenz (temporary exhibitions). There is also a Haus des Genusses, celebrating regional wine making and offering a Baroque dining experience. Permanent exhibitions at several locations inside the fortress cover the 5000 years of history of Ehrenbreitstein. There are also gastronomic establishments. The Koblenz youth hostel, with 157 beds, still occupies part of Ehrenbreitstein.

Places to see in ( Berlin - Germany ) Gleis 17, Grunewald
The Grunewald S-Bahn station is located on the western outskirts of Berlin. Between autumn 1941 and most probably spring 1942, deportation trains carrying Berlin Jews to ghettos and extermination camps in the east departed from this train station. The creation of the memorial was initiated by the Deutsche Bahn, the German national railway company, to commemorate the deportations undertaken by its predecessor, the Deutsche Reichsbahn.
The station opened on 1 August 1879 on the Wetzlarer Bahn from Berlin to Blankenheim and Wetzlar, the southwestern continuation of the Stadtbahn. It was originally named Hundekehle after a nearby lake and received its current name on 15 October 1884, when the former Grunewald station reopened under the name of Halensee. The entrance hall modelled on a castle gate was finished in 1899. Berlin-Grunewald was connected to the S-Bahn network on 11 June 1928.
Starting on 18 October 1941 the adjacent goods station until February 1945 was one of the major sites of deportation of the Berlin Jews. The trains left mainly for the ghettos of Litzmannstadt and Warsaw, and from 1942 directly for the Auschwitz and Theresienstadt concentration camps. On 18 October 1991 a monument was inaugurated at the ramp leading to the former freight yard. The Deutsche Bahn had a memorial established on 27 January 1998 at the historic track 17 (Gleis 17), where most of the deportation trains departed.

Burg Stahleck in Bacharach - Hide and Seek in a Fairy Tale German Castle Youth Hostel
If you've ever dreamed of being in a fairy tale then you should head to the Middle Rhine Valley to stay at Burg Stahleck.
The youth hostel in Bacaharch, Burg Stahleck, is about as fairy tale a setting as we've ever experienced. Jugendherbergen Stahleck literally towers over the Rhine, with the river sparkling beneath.
We got a special look around, right up to the pinnacle tower before checking in to one of the hostel's few castle themed rooms, packed with crenellations and castle bunk beds. It's an amazing place to stay, and an even better place to play hide and seek.
If you do visit, grow your hair long just in case you want to escape. Although you probably won't want to.
