WOODLANA STATION CYGNET PARKS KANGAROO ISLAND
September 19 2017
Media mogul Kerry Stokes and veteran cattleman Peter Murray are selling the largest farming portfolio on South Australia's Kangaroo Island with industry sources putting the value of their 7821-hectare Cygnet Park Farms and livestock as high as $50 million.
Mr Stokes is one of a host of billionaires who have invested heavily in large scale farming assets, especially those tied to beef cattle production, with mining magnate Gina Rinehart and retailers Brett Blundy and Gerry Harvey having all snapped up major agricultural assets in recent years.
Cygnet Park Farms comprises 7800 hectares of prime mixed-use farming aggregated over a decade.

The cattle, sheep and cropping aggregation, which the Seven Group executive chairman has compiled with his long-time business partner over the past decade, comes to market at a time of rising prime farmland values, especially properties tied to protein-rich food production like beef and lamb and to wool production.
The offering of Cygnet Park Farms, through Elders Real Estate, includes a herd of about 3300 cattle and 15,700 sheep and is expected to attract interest from international corporate investors and local farming groups. The island is renowned for its local produce, which is marketed under the Kangaroo Island brand and is especially sought-after in Asia.

First established in 2007 under the stewardship of Mr Murray, the aggregation has been steadily expanded over the years, most recently in June 2015 when Woodlana Station, a 2823-hectare landholding at Cassini on the island's central north coast was acquired for $4.7 million.
In 2010, the pair acquired Clifton Downs, a 550-hectare grazing property on Kangaroo Island. Other properties in the portfolio include Long Hill Station.
Mr Murray, one of Australia's most experienced cattlemen, said he had decided to bring the portfolio to market in order to focus on other business interests as he transitions into retirement. He turns 81 next month.
I am very proud of the quality portfolio of both real estate and livestock assets that we have built in one of the world's most pristine agricultural environments. I will retain a smaller portfolio of properties on the Island moving forward as I remain convinced it is one of the best livestock production regions in Australia and has enormous opportunities to deliver high margin, quality produce to the world.

Kangaroo Island lies off the coast of South Australia, and is a treasure-trove of wildlife and natural features. These photographs were taken in March 2009, when the area was still in the grip of a severe drought.
Exploring the Coorong
The Coorong National Park is a protected area located in South Australia about 156 kilometres (97 mi) southeast of Adelaide that predominantly covers a lagoon ecosystem officially known as the Coorong and the Younghusband Peninsula on the Coorong's southern side.
One of the unique aspects of the Coorong is the interaction of water along its length, with sea water and Murray River water meeting rainfall and ground water.
The freshwater supports the fauna (animal) of the area while the sea water is the habitat for much of the birdlife

Spotted Whistling Duck out of familiar waters!
The Spotted Whistling Duck is a rare vagrant to Australia. Hitherto it's only been spotted near Weipa close to the tip of Cape York & therefore PNG, the duck's normal habitat. A small colony of Spotted Whistling Ducks found their way to a couple of beach side lagoons at Wonga Beach, a township just north of Mossman/Port Douglas.
The birds were spotted & identified by local birder & bird tour operator Del Richards of Fine Feather Tours.

Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island. It lies in the state of South Australia 112 km southwest of Adelaide. Its closest point to the mainland is Snapper Point in Backstair Passage which is 13.5 km from the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Once occupied by Australian Aborigines, the native population disappeared after the land became an island following rising sea levels several thousand years ago. It was subsequently resettled from the early 19th century onwards, at first casually by sealers and whalers, and then as part of the colony of South Australia from 1836.

Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia. Mignon grew up there, but I've only visited, in 1990, 2001 and 2012. These photos are from those trips. The music is a piece titled A Song for Martin, which I wrote a few years ago following the death of my friend Martin.
