Dumfries House is a Palladian country house in Ayrshire, Scotland. It is located within a large estate, around 2 miles west of Cumnock. Noted for being one of the few such houses with much of its original 18th-century furniture still present, including specially commissioned Thomas Chippendale pieces, the house and estate is now owned in charitable trust by The Great Steward of Scotland's Dumfries House Trust, which maintains it as a visitor attraction and hospitality and wedding venue. Both the house and the gardens are listed as significant aspects of Scottish heritage.
The estate and an earlier house was originally called Lefnoreis or Lochnorris, owned by a branch of the Craufurds of Loudoun. The present house was built in the 1750s for William Dalrymple, 5th Earl of Dumfries, by John Adam and Robert Adam. Having been inherited by the 2nd Marquess of Bute in 1814, it remained in his family until 2007 when the 7th Marquess sold it to the nation for £45 million due to the cost of upkeep.
Due to its significance and the risk of the furniture collection being distributed and auctioned, after three years of uncertainty, in 2007 the estate and its entire contents was purchased for £45m for the country by a consortium headed by Charles, Prince of Wales, including a £20m loan from the Prince's charitable trust. The intention was to renovate the estate to become self-sufficient, both to preserve it and regenerate the local economy. As well as donors and sponsorship, funding is also intended to come from constructing the nearby housing development of Knockroon, a planned community along the lines of the Prince's similar venture, Poundbury in Dorset.
The house duly reopened in 2008, equipped for public tours. Since then various other parts of the estate have been reopened for various uses, to provide both education and employment, as well as funding the trust's running costs.
Unfortunately there is not photography allowed inside the property.
This was the one place I wanted to see more than any other. It was a dream of mine to visit this house after watching the documentary.

For any copyright, please send me a message. Poundbury, created in 1993 in Dorset, on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, was an experimental town that has blossomed into something unrecognisable. It now has a population of around 3,500 people and provides 2,000 people with jobs in over 180 businesses. The town is expected to be completed by around 2026, when it is estimated to have around 6,000 residents. The Prince of Wales tried to recreate this success with a different housing development in a vastly different area and economic climate. Knockroom is being built near Cumnock in Ayrshire, Scotland, which is an economically deprived area that has experienced net migration away from it for nearly a decade. Charles planned to build 770 homes on the edge of the estate belonging to Dumfries House. He originally bought the Dumfries House estate in 2007 in order to save the “priceless” furniture inside the stately home from being auctioned off. To buy the £45million estate, he borrowed £25million via his charitable foundation and the rest was raised by charities and agencies including the Scottish Government. He hoped to help regenerate the local area by renovating the house and making it available for tours and as a wedding venue, providing jobs for local residents. He also planned to convert a “run-down farm building” into an upmarket guesthouse and regenerate a walled garden. Alongside this, he planned to build the Knockroon housing development and use the money from the sale of the properties to pay back the loan within five years, as well as help fund the other projects. Unfortunately, the 2008 financial crash and the global recession, throwing a spanner into his ambitious plans. He told the 2012 ITV documentary ‘The Royal Restoration’ it was a “huge worry” that kept him up at night. He said: “The difficulty was, having done the deal, then a year later the bottom fell out of the whole market, didn’t it? “So that made it very interesting because, of course, overnight the value of everything went right down.” Due to this, Charles’ charitable foundation was left having to pay huge interest payments on the loan and his critics started to accuse him of recklessness. In the end, Charles had to raise the money to pay off the loan through private donors. Construction on Knockroon finally started in April 2011 and by spring 2012 the first houses were on sale. ITV’s presenter Alan Titchmarsh visited the site in Spring 2012 and found that while, 5,000 people had visited the show homes only three properties had been sold. The Prince of Wales surprised hundreds of guests when he dropped into a tea dance at Dumfries House, the stately home he helped save for the nation. The event is held every three weeks in East Ayrshire and aims to help counter loneliness and social isolation, particularly among older members of the local community and adults with additional support needs. He also met actor and presenter Joe Swash (inset) who has been filming on the estate with Good Morning Britain.

For a decade now, Dumfries House has been giving city kids a taste of the country. And it's all thanks to Prince Charles, who helped to save a historic Scottish property from being sold off.
