Dungan mosque is one of the most famous places in Karakol town. The most interesting thing is that it is built without a single nail. More than 100 years ago there was a Chinese master who lived in this town. At that time Kyrgyz were already Muslims but they did not have they own mosque. And they had to pray at home or in yurts. The master liked local people for their traditions and hospitality. That is why he decided to built a mosque for them. (Source -

Dungan Village Yrdyk and Family Dinner - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
The village of Yrdyk is approximately 10 km west of Karakol. Here lives the closed community of Dungans, the successors of the Muslim Chinese, in China described as Hui. Until recently, only Dungans who are married to Dungans are allowed to live in Yrdyk.
About 140 years ago, the Dungans were expelled from China and came in three groups to Kyrgyzstan. One of these groups settled in Yrdyk. The other two groups were largely assimilated by the local population. Approx 1000 people came to Yrdyk. Today, about 3000 inhabitants live here. They have kept their own culture, which is reflected in architecture, clothing and many other habits.
At the mosque, we meet Aman from Destination Karakol, with whom we already made the food tour in Karakol.
He gives us an overview of the history of the mosque. Originally it was designed by the same architect who built the Dungan Mosque in Karakol. The mosque in Yrdyk should be twice as big. During the construction phase, an insurrection of the Kyrgyz against the Russian Empire took place, and the Dungan also joined the uprising.
But the uprising was defeated and the unfinished mosque turned into a warehouse. Then it was burnt down by the Dungans. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Kyrgyzstan, today's mosque was rebuilt 20 years ago. Only men have access.
The Dungan museum is only a few streets away. Here, Mr. Lyck Lee awaits us already. He even speaks a little German. Aman acts as an English interpreter.
The immigrant Dungans belong to two ethnic groups, the Ma and the Lee. Mr. Lee is 65 years old and, as the name suggests, a representative of the Lee ethnic group. He says that Bruce Lee is one of his relatives.
He tells the story of the Dungan which came as Arab warriors to China to support the emperor. To make them stay in China, they were married to Chinese women. Paintings and pictures show these couples. Dungans live according to Chinese tradition and customs but have Muslim faith.
150 years ago there was an uprising in China because of the restrictions on the living conditions for farmers. After a 15-year fight, the people had to escape over the Tien Shan Mountains in wintertime.

Das Dorf Yrdyk liegt ungefähr 10 km westlich von Karakol. Hier leben ausschließlich Dunganen, die Nachfolger der moslemischen Chinesen, die in China als Hui bezeichnet wurden. Bis vor Kurzem durften in Yrdyk nur Dunganen leben, die mit Dunganen verheiratet sind.
Die Dunganen wurden vor ca. 140 Jahren in China vertrieben und kamen in drei Gruppen nach Kirgisistan. Eine dieser Gruppen siedelte in Yrdyk. Er erzählt uns die Geschichte der Moschee. Ursprünglich wurde sie vom gleichen Architekten geplant, der auch die Dunganen Moschee in Karakol erbaut hatte. Die Moschee in Yrdyk sollte doppelt so groß werden. Während der Bauphase fand ein Aufstand der Kirgisen gegenüber dem Russischen Reich statt, dem sich die Dunganen anschlossen.
Der Aufstand wurde aber niedergeschlagen und die unfertige Moschee in ein Lagerhaus verwandelt. Darauf hin wurde sie von den Dunganen niedergebrannt. Nach dem Zerfall der Sowjetunion und der Unabhängigkeit Kirgisistans wurde die heutige Moschee vor 20 Jahren wieder aufgebaut. Nur Männer haben Zutritt.
Das Dunganen Museum befindet sich nur wenige Straßen weiter. Hier erwartet uns Mr. Lyck Lee. Er spricht sogar etwas deutsch. Aman fungiert als Englisch Dolmetscher.
Die eingewanderten Dunganen waren in zwei Volksgruppen gegliedert, die Ma und die Lee. Mr. Lee ist 65 Jahre alt und, wie der Name schon sagt, ein Vertreter der Lee Volksgruppe. Nach seiner Aussage ist er mit Bruce Lee verwandt.
Er erzählt die Geschichte der Dunganen, die als arabische Krieger nach China kamen um den Kaiser zu unterstützen. Damit sie in China bleiben wurden sie mit chinesischen Frauen verheiratet. Gemälde und Bilder zeigen diese Paare. Dunganen leben nach chinesischen Bräuchen und Sitten haben aber muslimischen Glauben.
In China kam es vor 150 Jahren zum Aufstand wegen Einschränkungen der Lebensbedingungen für Bauern. Nach 15 jährigem Kampf mussten sie im Winter über das Tien Shan Gebirge flüchten.

Karakol, City Walk - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
Our city walk in Karakol starts at the Dungan Mosque. Rakhat Dzhamalova from Destination Karakol welcomes us in front of the entrance. Destination Karakol aims to sustainable strengthening tourism in the region. Rakhat speaks excellent German and English, probably also Kyrgyz and Russian. She will go with us on a two-hour tour.
To begin with, she tells us something about the history of the city. Karakol was founded in 1869 as a Russian military base. Based on the first coat of arms she shows the historical context. The crown symbolizes the fort. The crescent shows the Muslim religious affiliation of the inhabitants. The globe symbolizes the international research expeditions that started here. The bee shows the importance of honey production for the first settlers. As early as 1983, the military built 80 houses.
Today, Karakol has about 90,000 inhabitants and is growing very fast. The engine of growth is tourism. The city has a university and several colleges.
Besides Russians, the first settlers were Ukrainians who moved here because of bad harvests in their homeland. After that, many Dungans fled from China because of political persecution. Primarily, they came from Guangzhou province. 3000 Dungan people live in the city. Until 2015, the Dungan Mosque was the central mosque in Karako. A Chinese architect who lacked the right hand, built the mosque including the carvings together with 20 workers, in just three months. They didn't use any nails. The columns symbolize poplars, many of which were planted around the mosque.
In a Dungan village in the vicinity is a museum, built by the same architect.
As payment, one sent him 2 camels with gold and other treasures to China, but they never arrived.
After visiting the mosque, we continue towards the Orthodox Church.
Then we pass the Tatar mosque, built before 1854. In the backyard is also a boxing club. It was the first stone building and survived the earthquake of 1854 unscathed.
We arrive at the Russian Quarter, so to speak the old town, built by the first Russian military. The white-and-blue houses are often described as gingerbread houses. With the help of USAID, one restored a whole street in the original state.

Unser Stadtrundgang in Karakol startet bei der Dunganen-Moschee. Rakhat Dzhamalova von Destination Karakol begrüßt uns vor dem Eingang. Destination Karakol hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt den Tourismus in der Region nachhaltig zu stärken. Rakhat spricht ausgezeichnet Deutsch und Englisch. Vermutlich auch noch mindestens Kirgisisch und Russisch. Sie wird uns auf einem zweistündigen Rundgang begleiten.
Zur Einleitung erzählt sie uns einiges über die Geschichte der Stadt. Karakol wurde 1869 als russische Militärbasis gegründet. Anhand des ersten Stadtwappen zeigt sie den geschichtlichen Zusammenhang. Die Krone symbolisiert das Fort. Der Halbmond zeigt die muslimische Religionszugehörigkeit der Bewohner. Der Globus symbolisiert die internationalen Forschungsexpeditionen, die hier ihren Ausgang nahmen und die Biene zeigt die Bedeutung der Honiggewinnung für die ersten Siedler. Bereits 1983 erbauten die Militärs 80 Häuser.

Die Säulen symbolisieren Pappeln, von denen auch viele um die Moschee gepflanzt wurden.
In einem Dunganen Dorf in der näheren Umgebung gibt es ein Museum vom gleichen Architekten.
Als Bezahlung wurden ihm 2 Kamele mit Gold und weiteren Schätzen nach China gesandt, die aber nie ankamen.
Nach der Besichtigung der Moschee gehen wir weiter in Richtung orthodoxe Kirche.
Danach passieren wir die Tataren-Moschee, erbaut vor 1854. Im Hinterhof befindet sich auch ein Boxklub. Es war das erste Gebäude aus Stein und hat das Erdbeben von 1854 unbeschadet überstanden.
Wir sind nun im russischen Viertel angekommen, quasi der Altstadt, die von den ersten russischen Militärs errichtet wurde. Die weiß-blauen Häuser werden gerne auch als Lebkuchenhäuser bezeichnet. Mit Hilfe von USAID wurde ein Straßenzug im Originalzustand wieder restauriert.

Hey guys this week we are in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan. Yeah, so Karakol (Каракол) is a place that we've actually visited last year but we were only here on a day trip so we didn't get to see a whole lot. Right and this is basically the adventure capital of Kyrgyzstan. There is a lot of good hiking, you can take boat trips. So we're just going to show you like what you can do in and around this area. Let's
Our first stop was the Dungan Mosque. This mosque is unique because architecturally it looks a lot like a Buddhist temple; this is because it was built by the Dungan community, an ethnically Chinese people group who follow Islam.
Another iconic place of worship in Karakol (Каракол) is the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. This is a traditional Russian wooden cathedral complete with onion domes.
We also squeezed in a quick visit to Karakol’s History Museum, which has a rather fascinating taxidermy collection.
Okay so it is dinner time here in Karakol (قاراقول) and the sun has gone down and today we are going to be doing a traditional meal with a family.
So we're going to be preparing Ashlyanfu (Ашлян-фу) which is a cold noodle starch soup and then we're going to go into their home and have a nice family dinner together.
And because we love our food, we also took a cooking class where we learned to make a traditional Uyghur dish: laghman (Лагман).
As far as day trips go, one nearby attraction from Karakol (Каракол) is Jeti Oguz known for its red hills. It’s about a 30 minute drive and you can easily hire a driver to take you out there.
Last but not least, one of the most popular things to do in Karakol (Каракол) is hiking. This is considered the adventure capital of Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) with many hikes and horse treks starting right in town.

Muslims Praying at a Dungan Mosque in Kyrgyzstan
I first read about the Dungans people on Lonely Planet. It's fascinating to me since I'm rather interested the Chinese diaspora. Few would think of them in Central Asia a region with historical ties to China since the Han Dynasty.
The Dungans came to Central Asia at the end of the Qing Dynasty. In China they are referred as the Hui, Muslims of Chinese origin. During the period of the Qing Dynasty they participated in a bloody rebellion against the local government. Their struggle eventually failed forcing many to escape. They went west ward over the Tianshan mountains to what is now Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

Karakol lies between the eastern end of the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan, the Issyk-Kul, and the Tian Shan mountain range.
The city was founded in 1860 as a Russian military outpost. Yet, Karakol did only develop when research travelers started to investigate the region between China and Kyrgyzstan.
In 1888, Russian military and geographer Przhevalsky died of typhus during preparations for a trip to Tibet. His grave and a museum are now in a nearby memorial park
The most important sights in the city are the Dungan Mosque from 1910 and the wooden Orthodox church from 1895.
As we have some free time, we make a short flight with the drone. We take off from the large square in front of the building No. 1, which houses the city administration and a Kickboxing Club. West of it is the Municipal Theater and to the east a Lenin monument.
By means of the drone, we recognize the Kungej-Alatau Mountains to the north. It lies beyond the Issyk-Kul and rises up to 4771 m. In the south, you can see the Tian Shan Mountains.
Here you see already, that Karakol is an ideal starting point for trekking and cycle tours.
You can also clearly see the Russian Orthodox Church, west of the square.

Als wir etwas freie Zeit haben unternehmen wir eine kleinen Rundflug mit der Drohne. Wir starten auf dem großen Platz vor dem Gebäude Nr. 1, in dem die Stadtverwaltung und ein Kickboxer Club untergebracht sind. Westlich davon befindet sich das Stadttheater und östlich ein Lenin Denkmal.
Mittels der Drohne ist in Richtung Norden das Kungej-Alatau Gebirge zu erkennen. Es liegt jenseits den Yssykköl und erhebt sich bis auf 4771 m. Im Süden kann man das Tian Shan Gebirge sehen.
Daraus ist leicht zu erkennen, dass Karakol ein idealer Ausgangspunkt für Trekking und Radtouren ist.
Gut zu sehen ist auch die russisch orthodoxe Kirche westlich des Platzes.

Ashlyan-fu (Ашлям фу) is the national dish of Uighur and Dungan . It is a starch noodles with slices. Prepared in many Asian countries. The former Soviet Union was the greatest fame ashlyan Fu-prepare Karakol, the administrative center of the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan.

Visiting Karakol as day trip in Kyrgyzstan
After spending several days focused on the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan we decided to take a day trip to Karakol (Каракол) for a change of pace. Our trip focused on visiting some museums, mosques, cathedrals, markets and having a traditional Kyrgyz lunch inside of a yurt. We had ambitious plans of hiking, visiting a waterfall and few other things but we ran out of time. If you're going to visit Karakol learn from our mistake and spend a few more days to really enjoy the outdoor adventure activities.

Visiting Karakol as day trip in Kyrgyzstan Travel Video Transcript:
Good morning from Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан). It is time for a day trip because we've been spending a lot of time at the World Nomad Games and it is time to get out and get to know the country a little bit. So we're taking a day trip to Karakol (Каракол). We're going to be doing some hiking, visiting waterfalls. Yeah, it is going to be really cool. I mean we've seen quite a bit of the country but we haven't been to that area yet so we're really excited about it. Let's go.
Okay, so we have been driving for about two hours and we've almost made it to Karakol (Каракол). Right now we're in the outskirts and we're stopping at the Nikolay Mikhailovich Przhevalsky museum and basically this was a guy who wanted to be a traveler. So I can relate to him. Um, he was from Russia but at the time Russian didn't have the permission to just you know go off and wander around on their own. So this guy decided to join the military and he proposed to be the first person to explore Central Asia and reach Tibet and his proposal was approved so he was funded by Russia and today there is a museum dedicated to his work.
After a short visit to the museum, we then continued on our drive towards Karakol (Каракол), where our first stop was the Dungan Mosque.
So in order to visit the Mosque you don't just wear a scarf. You need a full cloak. This will be interesting. Alright. Let's put this on. Fancy. It is like velvet.
The mosque gets its name from the Dungan people who are Muslim, but of Chinese origin. The building is quite unique because you can see the two cultures colliding; it contains elements of a traditional mosque, but at first glance it looks more like a Buddhist temple.
So now we're visiting an Orthodox Church and that was really close to the mosque.
We then went to the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which is in the centre of Karakol (Каракол). Just remember, girls need to wear a head covering and boys must take off their hats in order to go inside.
From there we continued to the Karakol Market in search of food. If there’s one dish the town is known for it’s Ashlyan Fu, a cold noodle soup with spices and jellies. There’s a whole alley in the market that specializes in this dish; so be sure to try it.
Alright so we've had a pretty busy morning of sightseeing. Now it is time for food. Yeah, we've worked up a pretty big appetite and the coolest thing is we're going to go eat inside of yurt. A yurt.
For lunch we had Dumlyama: a dish with potatoes, cabbage, onions, peppers, and meat. We also had boorsok: which are little pieces of fried dough that go really nice with jam.
So we've stopped off at this kind of cool scenic area that is called Jeti-Ögüz and nearby there is apparently some fantastic hiking. Yeah, and the name translates to seven bulls so I don't know do you see any bulls over there? You know I see in the rock formations. I think I see more than seven things.
We had really been looking forward to hiking along here, but unfortunately, this is the part of the tour where we ran out of time. This also means we didn’t get to see the waterfalls we had heard about, so if you do decide to visit Karakol (قاراقول), don’t do it as a quick day trip like we did!
Yeah, I think it is the kind of place where you want to give it a few days so you can see the surrounding areas and also that town is really known for hiking so if you're in to outdoorsy stuff go there and explore it properly.
Yeah, maybe spend like two or three days in Karakol (Каракол) see the surroundings, hike, trek and yeah really explore it.

Dungan Revolt (1862–77)
The '''Dungan Revolt ( 1862–77 ) ''' or '''Tongzhi Hui Revolt''' (, Xiao'erjing: /, ) or '''Hui ( Muslim ) Minorities War''' was a mainly ethnic and religious war fought in 19th-century western China, mostly during the reign of the Tongzhi Emperor ( r. 1861–75 ) of the Qing dynasty. The term sometimes includes the Panthay Rebellion in Yunnan, which occurred during the same period. However, this article relates specifically to the uprising by members of the Muslim Hui and other Muslim ethnic groups in China's Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia provinces, as well as in Xinjiang, between 1862 and 1877. The revolt arose over a pricing dispute involving bamboo poles, when a Han merchant selling to a Hui did not receive the amount demanded for the goods. A recorded 20.77 million population reduction in Shaanxi and Gansu due to migration and war related death. 74.5% reduction in Gansu, and 44.7% in Shaanxi. In Shaanxi, 83.7% ( ~5.2 million ) of the total loss occurred in the period of war as a consequence of mass migration and war death. Many civilian deaths were also caused by famine due to war conditions. The uprising occurred on the western bank of the Yellow River in Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia, but excluded Xinjiang Province. A chaotic affair, it often involved diverse warring bands and military leaders with no common cause or a single specific goal. A common misconception is that the revolt was directed against the Qing dynasty, but no evidence shows that the rebels intended to attack the capital, Beijing, or to overthrow the entire Qing government. Most historians define it as a rebellion for secession. When the rebellion failed, mass emigration of the Dungan people from Ili to Imperial Russia ensued.
