Durham, England: Magnificent Norman Cathedral
For nearly a thousand years, pilgrims have set their sights on Durham's great cathedral. Built around the year 1100 to house the bones of the great missionary monk, St. Cuthbert, this medieval church stands like a mighty fortress and offers perhaps England's best and purest look at Norman (Romanesque) architecture. Durham Castle and Cathedral - England Best Castles - Travel & Discover
Durham Cathedral was built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries to house the relics of St Cuthbert (evangelizer of Northumbria) and the Venerable Bede. It attests to the importance of the early Benedictine monastic community and is the largest and finest example of Norman architecture in England. The innovative audacity of its vaulting foreshadowed Gothic architecture. Behind the cathedral stands the castle, an ancient Norman fortress which was the residence of the prince-bishops of Durham. Places to see in ( Durham - UK ) Durham Cathedral
The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham, usually known as Durham Cathedral and home of the Shrine of St Cuthbert, is a cathedral in the city of Durham, England, the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Durham.
Durham Cathedral is regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with nearby Durham Castle, which faces it across Palace Green.
The present Durham Cathedral replaced the 10th century White Church, built as part of a monastic foundation to house the shrine of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. The treasures of Durham Cathedral include relics of St Cuthbert, the head of St Oswald of Northumbria and the remains of the Venerable Bede. In addition, its Library contains one of the most complete sets of early printed books in England, the pre-Dissolution monastic accounts, and three copies of the Magna Carta.
Durham Cathedral occupies a strategic position on a promontory high above the River Wear. From 1080 until the 19th century the bishopric enjoyed the powers of a Bishop Palatine, having military as well as religious leadership and power. Durham Castle was built as the residence for the Bishop of Durham. The seat of the Bishop of Durham is the fourth most significant in the Church of England hierarchy, and he stands at the right hand of the monarch at coronations. Signposts for the modern day County Durham are subtitled Land of the Prince Bishops.
There are daily Church of England services at the cathedral, with the Durham Cathedral Choir singing daily except Mondays and when the choir is on holiday. The cathedral is a major tourist attraction within the region, the central tower of 217 feet (66 m) giving views of Durham and the surrounding area.

Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic center are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.
Its powerful religious position granted such great honor to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Durham Cathedral, Durham, England
Built across 40 years in the 1100's, it is the largest Cathedral from the Norman Era left in the world. 10 years ago, the BBC poled Brits about their favourite building in the UK, and this Cathedral one. The inside was awe inspiring. Set on a cliff over looking the river (where the video starts), the outside is equally amazing.
Durham, UK

A Short Trip to Durham During Winter | Durham UK || Tinny's ESCAPES Vlog
Date: 6th February 2018
Since I was about to leave the UK back to Malaysia, so I decided to visit this historic city where is located near to Newcastle Upon Tyne that I always passed by when I was travelling to other cities by train every time, but I had never taken time to visit. It was with a purpose of meeting my friend, Patrick to say goodbye before I left England.
I met Pat at the Durham Railway Station, and then we just simply walked around in the town. We crossed the Framwellgate Bridge, walked along the River Wear, and stopped by the Prebends Bridge to take some pictures of the beautiful snowy sceneries. Afterwards, we visited the Durham Cathedral (Known as one of the finest Norman architectures and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with nearby Durham Castle). It is worth for a visit if you are a fan of history and historic architecture, as well as Harry Potter. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was realised on film through bewildering several locations within the UK, which the elegant cloisters (Hogwarts School quadrangle) and the cathedral chapter house (the scene for Professor McGonagall’s class teaching the young wizards to turn animals into water goblets) were included.
I was planning to enter the Durham Castle but I changed my mind due to some reasons. Then we had our lunch at Pizza Express in the town before I took my train back to Newcastle.
